He was attempting to alter the memories of those participating in the illusion through the illusion itself. In other words, a subtle transformation—or perhaps transformation was not quite the right word. It was more like an overwrite.
If a person's brain were treated as a computer, with memories as its stored data, then what Kenichi Amamiya was doing was directly copying memories from elsewhere and using them to overwrite the original ones. That would alter the memories stored in the computer, while the person themselves would be unable to detect anything abnormal. In this way, a person could be subtly changed until they believed they had always been the person described by those memories.
However, this method had certain drawbacks. If he wanted the other person to notice no abnormalities whatsoever, Kenichi Amamiya needed them to stop resisting. Better yet, they needed to willingly abandon their own memories. It was an extremely difficult operation, after all. Who would voluntarily give up their memories?

Kenichi Amamiya had now accomplished this. He had successfully made Mitsuba Otsutsuki abandon his own memories. That way, he could test whether his idea would work.
