After Professor Oak confirmed that Kangaskhan’s Mega Evolution allowed her child to battle outside her pouch, Chen Shi helped Steven identify Mega Stones and encouraged his Pokémon before the next day’s semifinal. Cynthia left to handle personal business, and Chen Shi hoped his semifinal opponent would be Steven or Lance rather than her.
Chen Shi faced Cynthia in the Pokémon World Championships semifinals and opened the six-on-six battle with Togekiss against Gastrodon. Togekiss’s Air Slash repeatedly flinched Gastrodon until it fainted, leaving Cynthia to face Chen Shi’s newly revealed tactic.
Chen Shi defeated Cynthia’s Gastrodon and forced her to reveal Spiritomb’s Skill Swap strategy, then Mega Evolved Metagross to face her Lucario. Cynthia Mega Evolved Lucario in response, leaving the battle poised between the two powerful Pokémon.
Chen Shi and Cynthia's Mega-Evolved Pokémon fought an intense battle, with Cynthia's Lucario trapping and badly injuring Metagross. Metagross endured Lucario's finishing attack, leaving Chen Shi poised to counter as the chapter ended.
Chen Shi sent out Swampert to face Cynthia’s Garchomp, and both Pokémon Mega Evolved. Cynthia’s strain from using Mega Evolution left her unable to give commands in time, while rain empowered Swampert to overwhelm Mega Garchomp with a rapid series of Waterfall attacks.
Chen Shi defeated Cynthia after Swampert’s Mega Evolution and Swift Swim overwhelmed Garchomp in the rain, sending him to the finals. Cynthia woke in the hospital and learned Chen Shi knew more about Mega Evolution than he had admitted, leaving him in trouble when she demanded an explanation.
Chen Shi prepared for the Pokémon World Championships final against Lance, while Cynthia remained angry over Chen Shi withholding information about Mega Evolution. That night, Dragapult reached Mid-Stage Senior Elite King, and Chen Shi celebrated with his Pokémon before they vowed to win.
Chen Shi and Lance began the six-on-six Pokémon World Championships final after receiving encouragement from their friends and supporters. Lance sent out his Mid-Stage Senior Elite King Hydreigon first, and Chen Shi noticed its quadruple weakness to Fairy-type attacks.
Chen Shi’s Florges debuted a powerful new Fairy-type move and defeated Lance’s Hydreigon in the opening match of the World Championships finals. Florges remained poised as the crowd cheered, while Lance had to choose his next Pokémon.
During the Pokémon World Championships final, Chen Shi revealed his hidden accomplishments and explained why he had kept them secret, leaving the audience and his grandparents stunned. Lance sent out Gyarados, and Chen Shi answered with Mega Swampert as Lance prepared to counter its strength in rain.
Chen Shi’s Swampert defeated Lance’s Gyarados, then struggled against Aerodactyl after losing control of the weather. Chen Shi used Telepathy to help Swampert seize Aerodactyl and counterattack with Hammer Arm.
Chen Shi and Lance sent out their Charizard after Swampert and Aerodactyl knocked each other out, then battled with increasingly powerful attacks. Super Charizard, near defeat, summoned his remaining strength for one final Flare Blitz as both trainers ordered their Pokémon to charge.
Chen Shi sent out Mega Metagross after Charizard and Lance’s Charizard drew, and Metagross defeated Altaria before facing Lance’s powerful Dragonite. Metagross defied Chen Shi’s order to dodge and struck Dragonite with Ice Punch, but both Pokémon were sent flying, leaving the battle unresolved.
Chen Shi sent Florges against Lance’s Dragonite, and Florges drew on energy from Xerneas’s broken antler fragment to unleash a devastating Dazzling Gleam. She knocked Dragonite down, then smiled and bowed to Chen Shi, showing she was not afraid.
Chen Shi and Lance agreed that Dragapult’s battle against Dragonite would decide the Pokémon World Championships title. After using U-turn to escape Dragonite’s Ice Punch, Chen Shi sent Dragapult back into battle and declared that the real fight was beginning.
Chen Shi and Lance’s Dragapult and Dragonite fought through a punishing final exchange, leaving both Pokémon unable to rise. As Dragapult struggled to keep his promise to win, Chen Shi entered a strange darkness and felt the overwhelming pain Dragapult had been carrying.
Chen Shi and Dragapult awakened a bond form and defeated Lance’s Dragonite, winning their match. Afterward, Dragapult collapsed only after Chen Shi told him he was proud of him.
After waking in the temporary Pokémon Center following the championship battle, Chen Shi reassured his friends and explained that Dragapult had used a bond phenomenon rather than Mega Evolution. Steven reminded him about the awards ceremony the next day, where the top sixteen could choose Pokémon Eggs and enter the League’s treasure vault.
Chen Shi met Mu Jin Stone, who thanked him for helping Devon Corporation develop fossil revival technology and offered to fund a research institute for him. Chen Shi was left stunned by the offer.
Chen Shi accepted Mu Jin's offer to build a research institute and partnered with the Devon Corporation on Mega Stone research and an auction. He revealed that Pokéblocks could awaken Fairy-type energy and that Fairy-types were immune to Dragon-type moves, but made publishing his Fairy-type paper conditional on the League granting him a professorship.
Chen Shi and Mu Jin agreed to work together on revealing Fairy-type Pokémon, with Mu Jin helping Chen Shi pursue a Doctor title. Later, Chen Shi and Cynthia celebrated his championship and discussed Mega Stones and criminal groups before Cynthia kissed him.
After Chen Shi's championship win, Professor Oak explained the League's likely terms for recognizing Chen Shi's Fairy-type research and warned him not to grow careless with his rewards and new status. Chen Shi celebrated with his Pokémon and reminded Florges not to risk her health again.
Chen Shi and Steven attended the Pokémon World Championships closing ceremony, where Chen Shi confirmed he would publish research on Mega Evolution. He left Lance questioning his goal of becoming a Dragon-type Champion after learning Dragonite might not Mega Evolve and Chen Shi pointed out that many of Lance’s Pokémon were Flying-types.
Chen Shi told Leon and Diantha that the Devon Corporation auction would offer Mega Stones for Charizard and Gardevoir, inviting them to attend. His hint that Gardevoir had another type left the assembled Trainers suspecting that it shared Florges’s mysterious advantage against Dragon-types.
Chen Shi attended the Pokémon World Championships award ceremony after arranging for Diantha and Wallace to have a chance to bid on Mega Stones. He received the champion’s medal and trophy, then celebrated with a group photo of all seven of his Pokémon.
