"Well done, Chimchar." Bai Yun high-fived Chimchar and said happily.
"All right, now that your battle is over, take your Pokémon for treatment," the teacher on the field reminded him. Bai Yun nodded, recalled Chimchar, and waved to Cheng Tian and the others to let them know he was going for treatment first.
Cheng Tian and Lin Lin made OK signs. Su Han asked curiously, "You and that student seem really close, Cheng Tian."
Cheng Tian nodded. "We grew up together." Lin Lin raised her hand. "Me too! All three of us grew up together."
Cheng Tian suddenly slapped his forehead. "Right, I haven't formally introduced you yet. Su Han, the one who just battled is my friend Bai Yun. This is another friend of mine, Lin Lin."
Lin Lin giggled. "Hello, Su Han. I'm Lin Lin, Bai Yun's childhood sweetheart!" Just then, Bai Yun came up behind Lin Lin and rapped her on the head. "What nonsense are you saying?"
Lin Lin held her head indignantly. "But it's true!" "We just grew up together." "That's what childhood sweethearts are!"
Watching the two of them, Su Han said with a smile, "You really do seem like a pair of childhood sweethearts." At that, Lin Lin's little eyes almost curved into crescents.
"Stop grinning. It's your turn," Cheng Tian reminded her.
"Huh? It's my turn already?" Lin Lin turned toward the teacher and heard her exam number being called.
"I'll go, then. Remember to cheer for me." With that, Lin Lin walked off.
Cheng Tian looked at Bai Yun, who was about to sit back down. "Treatment was that quick?" "Chimchar wasn't badly hurt. They gave him a little treatment, and we came right back." Bai Yun sat down as he spoke, but just then...
"Ow, what's digging into me?" Feeling something hard beneath his backside, Bai Yun stood up and looked. It was a Poké Ball.
"Hm? Could that be Lin Lin's Poké Ball?" Su Han asked.
"Oh no." Bai Yun whipped his head toward Lin Lin. "That girl went onto the field without her Poké Ball!"
Meanwhile, both the teacher and Lin Lin's opponent were staring rather speechlessly at Lin Lin, who stood there in a panic.
"Wait, where's my Poké Ball?!" Lin Lin patted her waist and found nothing. She was so anxious she nearly cried.
"Silly girl, over here!" Lin Lin looked toward the voice and saw Bai Yun stand up and hurl the Poké Ball in his hand toward her.
Lin Lin fumbled for a while before finally catching the Poké Ball. She hurriedly turned to the teacher. "I've got my Poké Ball now. We can start, teacher."
Just then, Cheng Tian suddenly noticed something odd. Lin Lin's hat looked strange. Could it be...
"Both contestants, send out your Pokémon."
A red light flashed. "Come out, Psyduck!" Lin Lin's opponent was also a girl, and her starter Pokémon was Psyduck, hailed as one of the three Water-type fools.
"Psy?" Psyduck appeared, clutching its big yellow head and tilting it to one side.
"Come out, Pachirisu... Huh??? Where's Pachirisu?!" Lin Lin threw her Poké Ball too, but after the red light flashed, the ball proved to be empty.
Laughter erupted around the field, and three black lines instantly appeared on the teacher's face. "Please summon your Pokémon immediately. Stop holding things up."
"J-just a moment, teacher..."
Just then, a little white head suddenly poked out of Lin Lin's hat. It was Pachirisu.
He had been sleeping soundly inside her hat and only woke when he heard Lin Lin call his name. Lin Lin was overjoyed. "Pachirisu, get down here and get ready to battle!"
"Pachi!" Pachirisu jumped out of her hat and ran to the center of the field, ready to battle.
"Now, let the match begin!"
"Psyduck, attack with Water Gun!" Psyduck struck first, firing one Water Gun after another from its bill.
"Dodge while using Charge!" Lin Lin ordered. Pachirisu immediately began darting nimbly around the field, avoiding the incoming Water Guns. "Thunder Shock!"
Pachirisu sent a bolt of electricity toward Psyduck. "Psy!" Psyduck cried out in pain, its feathers charred black where the attack had struck.
The girl gritted her teeth. Psyduck's level was very low, and it was slow as well. Against a super-effective move, it would faint after just a few hits.
"Restrict his movements! Use Confusion!" Purple light shone in Psyduck's adorably vacant eyes. Pachirisu, who had been running across the grass, suddenly felt his body stop before he floated into the air. "Pachi!"
Pachirisu kicked his short little legs frantically. Controlling Confusion, Psyduck hurled him toward the ground.
Lin Lin was frantic. "Quick, use Defense Curl!" Before he landed, Pachirisu curled into a ball, raising his defenses in a hurry. Even so, he still took considerable damage.
"Press the advantage, Psyduck! Keep using Confusion!"
Before Pachirisu could recover, Psyduck used Confusion again, lifting him back into the air.
"Keep firing Water Gun!"
Psyduck abruptly released Confusion, letting Pachirisu fall while firing Water Gun.
"Pachi!" Pachirisu hit the ground again, kicking up a cloud of dust as Water Guns flew toward him. The girl breathed a sigh of relief.
Pachirisu was very frail, and with their levels still generally low, this should be enough to defeat him.
Just then, a figure rushed forward at incredible speed and slammed into Psyduck, knocking it over before swiftly retreating. "Psy!"
"What?" the girl exclaimed in surprise.
The attacking Pokémon was none other than Pachirisu, who had used Quick Attack. A faint green energy barrier faded from around him.
The teacher's eyes lit up. Pachirisu had used Protect the instant he was attacked, negating the damage from both Confusion and Water Gun, then unleashed Quick Attack the moment his opponent let her guard down.
What a fine strategy!
Seeing that Pachirisu was all right, Lin Lin sighed in relief. "Pachirisu, Charge!"
Psyduck struggled to its feet, and the girl hurriedly ordered, "Use Psybeam!" Psyduck had already taken heavy damage. Another hit could very well knock it out, so she decided to gamble. As long as Psybeam hit Pachirisu, it would confuse him. Then she would have her chance to counterattack!
"Use Follow Me!" Hearing Lin Lin's command, Pachirisu beckoned to Psyduck with his little paw, drawing Psybeam toward him.
"Use Protect!" The faint green energy barrier appeared again, and Pachirisu blocked the attack.
Because Protect followed by no Protect followed by Protect worked that way, Lin Lin had Pachirisu use Follow Me before using Protect again, ensuring he could block the opponent's Psybeam.
"Now, use Thunder Shock!"
"Pachi!" Pachirisu struck Psyduck with Thunder Shock again. This time, Psyduck fainted.
"The winner is Pachirisu!"
"Pachi!" "Great work, Pachirisu!"
Hearing his trainer praise him, Pachirisu proudly planted his little paws on his hips, then took a chestnut from his large tail and began nibbling on it.
His opponent also took out her Poké Ball and recalled Psyduck. "Thanks for your hard work, Psyduck," the girl said to the ball. It shook slightly, as though Psyduck were answering her.
"Congratulations," the girl said as she walked over to Lin Lin. "Hehe, Psyduck was great too!" Lin Lin replied with a giggle.
Only after seeing Lin Lin successfully defeat her opponent did Bai Yun relax and take a sip of Happy Water.
Cheng Tian nodded in satisfaction. The little fellow had learned Protect and Follow Me. With a focus on speed training from now on, he could become a true White Demon! Even now, the beginnings were already taking shape.
