Background / History

Foundation

Li Xingzhi founded the institute at the beginning of the Great Chen Empire, under orders from the late emperor. Formerly an archive keeper in Great Liang’s Hall of Literary Contemplation, he organized his accumulated learning and reflections into an institution divided between Knowing and Doing 3 12.

The institute recruited beyond official families: outstanding scholars from among the common people formed the majority of its students. Its graduates became important figures in government, with some reaching second-rank office. This extensive network made the institute a major political influence as well as an educational center 7 12.

Rivalry with Dragon Gate Academy

Emperor Zhao Chang’s support for the Cui Family’s Dragon Gate Academy threatened the institute’s position. The emperor granted the new academy land and temporary use of an imperial retreat, gave its graduates equal treatment in government and military service, and arranged for its entrance examination to use the same date and questions as the institute’s 10 14 15.

The effect on recruitment was immediate. The institute received approximately four or five thousand applicants—less than half its previous numbers—while Dragon Gate Academy attracted more than ten thousand in its first intake 15.

The Cui Family also placed youths inside the institute to recruit promising students and suppress those who resisted. Cui Mengshu was instructed to cultivate these connections, while Cui Zhixia anticipated that victory in the following year’s inter-academy competition would give the emperor grounds to suppress the institute 21 26.

Leadership During Li Xingzhi’s Absence

Before leaving to investigate Unknown Island, Li Xingzhi entrusted all institute affairs to Wei Zhilin. He instructed Wei to prioritize restraint and endurance, acknowledging that his own presence in the capital made the emperor feel constrained 16.

Wei nevertheless defended the institute’s students forcefully. After Huang Daogong abducted He An and Fan Dazhi, Wei settled their dispute with the Cui Family, incapacitated Huang, and warned him against seizing institute students again 19 21.

Principles

  • Unity of knowledge and action: Li Xingzhi’s pavilion bears this phrase. He explains that knowledge begins action, while action fulfills knowledge 7 9.
  • Truth-seeking: Wei Zhilin insists that the institute must remain faithful to its purpose despite political changes, repeating Li Xingzhi’s teaching that a gentleman’s learning seeks what is true 14.
  • Literary and martial mastery: Lu Zhengqing describes letters as carrying the Way and martial arts as proving it; the institute values proficiency in both 33.
  • Recruitment through service: Instructors sent throughout the country gain teaching experience and identify outstanding candidates for admission 17.

Entrance Examination

Recommendations qualify candidates to take the entrance test; they do not confer full student status. Candidates become students only after passing the assessment 6.

Component Procedure
Written examination A full-day examination covering classics, histories, philosophical writings, and literary collections 15.
Martial examination Candidates choose one of ten instructors in ten training halls and attack using their full strength 15 17.
Martial assessment criteria Examiners set aside their cultivated power and judge technique, coordination, agility, reactions under pressure, and other foundational skills 15.
Enrollment interval Successful candidates have ten days after results are posted before moving into the institute 18.

The documented selection examination falls on the eighth day of the eighth month 15.

Cultivation and Training

Foundational Instruction

The Practice Division first teaches conventional combat disciplines before introducing deeper cultivation theory 32.

  • Fist and palm techniques.
  • Saber, sword, and spear techniques.
  • Hidden weapons.
  • Mounted archery and bow techniques 32.

Chen Sangyu’s public cultivation lecture covers primordial energy, true qi, divine sense, cultivation history, and the six realms. Students with aptitude then receive instruction in cultivation methods, practical techniques, and theoretical foundations 32 34.

Institute Methods

  • Knowledge and Practice Heart Method — Created by Li Xingzhi and studied by most institute students. It supports cultivation up to the True Self Peak Realm 34.
  • Record of Knowledge and Practice — Praised by Chen Sangyu for its unrivaled control over transformations of primordial energy 32.
  • Mathematics and formations — Mathematical arts have direct martial applications. Lin Qiu Chi recounts that Li Xingzhi once used them to trap a hundred thousand soldiers 45.

Aptitude Testing and Rewards

Feature Details
Testing instrument Made by Li Xingzhi from a meteorite; consists of a gray stone sphere on a hexagonal tray 34.
Testing procedure Students place a hand on the instrument, relax their minds, and breathe deeply 34.
Initial testing results Of 436 students tested that morning, only twelve showed cultivation talent. This figure precedes Fan Dazhi and He An’s tests 34.
Exceptional results Fan Dazhi produces brilliant white light; He An produces an even more dazzling yellow light 34.
Spirit-Returning Pill The top scorers in the new students’ literary and martial examinations one year later each receive a pill refined in Immortal Birth Valley 32.
Pill’s benefit A person without aptitude has a seventy percent chance of gaining the ability to perceive Heaven and Earth Primordial Energy 32.

Students without cultivation aptitude are encouraged to continue scholarly study rather than regard their prospects as ended 32.
