Miwa Chisei had once been a girl her father cherished, too, so she couldn't approve of the man beside her.
He apparently almost never went home. Occasionally, he remembered to buy the children something, but otherwise, he left them entirely to their own devices.
Children needed adults as they grew up. That was important.
Miwa Chisei had come to appreciate this because she also intended to raise proper descendants for the Miwa family, so she had picked up a few insights.
Looking at the stuffed toy in her hands, she suddenly asked,
"What color does your stepdaughter like?"
Toji Fushiguro spread his hands.
"Whatever."
That really had been a pointless question. Miwa Chisei sighed and kept browsing the stuffed toys. When she spotted a cute sea urchin plush, a certain child's face suddenly popped into her mind.
Almost instinctively, Miwa Chisei said,
"Little Megumi is a very smart kid. Spend more time with him when you can."
She wasn't one to meddle, so she regretted it almost as soon as she said it.
Toji Fushiguro, however, looked interested. "Did you divine that?"
Miwa Chisei didn't deny it, but that impression had more to do with her one encounter with the child.
"Doesn't really matter. I'm more concerned about myself."
His casual tone made it sound as though he had picked up a stray cat or dog to keep, but Miwa Chisei knew that deep down, Toji Fushiguro still cared about Megumi Fushiguro.
After all, she had seen that look on his face before-a rare tenderness.
Still, Miwa Chisei had no habit of helping people mend their ways, so she said no more.
She chose a pink kitten plush and handed it to Toji Fushiguro.
For a little girl, it should have been a safe choice.
Toji Fushiguro took it and prepared to pay. He glanced at the girl who had been forced to pick out a gift for him because she wanted to learn Satoru Gojo's weakness, then teased her.
"Why do you want to know Satoru Gojo's weakness? You two seem pretty close."
Miwa Chisei gave Toji Fushiguro a complicated look, her voice flat.
"Where did you get that mistaken impression?"
"He rushed over pretty eagerly that time, didn't he?"
"That was a coincidence."
"Oh, really? But without that coincidence, I would've caught you."
Miwa Chisei fell silent. She didn't want to waste words on this man.
"So, where's my payment?"
A trace of helplessness flickered through Toji Fushiguro's eyes. What an unfriendly little girl.
"Satoru Gojo has an impenetrable barrier around him. You've seen it, right?"
Miwa Chisei said nothing. Clearly, she had no intention of answering a question like that.
Toji Fushiguro's lips curled. What a clever little brat.
"But it isn't without flaws. Using the Limitless Cursed Technique consumes a lot of cursed energy, so he doesn't keep it active all the time. As long as you lower his guard, you can catch him by surprise and land an attack."
Miwa Chisei was silent for a moment, then couldn't help scrutinizing the man before her.
"Are you planning to kill Satoru Gojo?"
Why else would he have studied him so thoroughly?
Toji Fushiguro waved a hand and laughed.
"The bounty on him has already been withdrawn. Why would I do that? Going up against someone like him could easily get me killed. I still want to live and enjoy myself."
Miwa Chisei, however, felt that this supposed "weakness" wasn't much use to her.
"He reacts fast. Unless you have a way to kill him in one strike, you won't get another chance."
With Satoru Gojo's current abilities, even if the man before her approached without a sound, he would only manage to injure him at most. After all, Gojo would activate Limitless immediately.
Toji Fushiguro nodded with a smile, looking a little regretful.
"I thought that would be useful information. Looks like you already figured it out, Miwa."
So she had been tricked into coming here to pick out a gift for this dangerous man for free?
Miwa Chisei sighed. For her bankbook's sake, she would let it slide.
"I'm leaving. I won't do this again. You tricked me."
Toji Fushiguro didn't stop the girl from leaving. Instead, he raised a hand and casually waved goodbye.
"Thanks, little girl from the Miwa family."
A sharp gleam flashed through his black eyes. He really did have to thank her. He had gained some very important information. So if he failed to land that first strike, he wouldn't get another chance?
Good thing he had prepared a backup. Otherwise, that thirty-million-yen bounty really would have been tricky.
The more Miwa Chisei thought about it on her way back, the more something felt wrong.
She didn't think her encounter with Toji Fushiguro had been accidental. Looking back, that business about buying a gift for his stepdaughter sounded like nonsense. Didn't he neglect even his own son?
For someone with no cursed energy, tracking a sorcerer couldn't have been easier.
She went over her bland conversation with Toji Fushiguro again and again, finally identifying one frequently repeated name.
Satoru Gojo.
Miwa Chisei immediately dialed Satoru Gojo's number.
"Satoru Gojo, I think someone's targeting you."
"Are you nuts?"
Satoru Gojo had felt something strange when he received Miwa Chisei's call, only for her to open her mouth and curse him.
Pah, pah, pah. That lousy Miwa family fortune-telling fraud. Nothing but nasty schemes.
Miwa Chisei was on the subway back to Jujutsu High. Her surroundings were noisy, hardly suitable for discussing something like this.
She was only warning Satoru Gojo because Uncle You had given her a hundred thousand yen for her birthday.
Yes, that was all.
So, with a rare show of patience, the girl asked,
"Where are you? I'll come find you."
Satoru Gojo thought Miwa Chisei was acting very strange, but having her seek him out felt pretty good. Taking full advantage, he shamelessly said,
"If you want to see me, you have to bring dessert. Otherwise, I'm not opening the door."
"Oh, you're in your dorm? See you."
Miwa Chisei hung up without expression.
Satoru Gojo heard a beep from the other end-she had hung up on him.
That damn Miwa family brat. She's so annoying.
Naturally, Miwa Chisei arrived empty-handed. What was that nonsense about dessert? She hadn't heard a thing.
The first thing she did after entering was find a sheet of paper and a pen on Satoru Gojo's desk and hold them out to him.
"Write a few words?"
Satoru Gojo's lips curved into a handsome grin, a slightly sharp tooth peeking through. There was a wild, unrestrained beauty to it.
"I get it now. You're the one targeting me, aren't you?"
Behind her sunglasses, Miwa Chisei's eyes held the unmistakable look of someone staring at an idiot.
"After all, I'm insanely strong-and ridiculously handsome. I totally understand why you're acting like this, Miwa."
The young, reckless, silver-haired high schooler practically had "I'm the greatest in the world" stamped across his face. He even patted Miwa Chisei on the shoulder.
"No need to divine anything. I'm definitely turning you down, you flat-chested little runt."
Without hesitation, Miwa Chisei hurled the paper and pen into his face, her voice as cold as the icy waters of the Edogawa in midwinter.
"Satoru Gojo, keep being this shameless and someone will stab you in the back one day."
The Miwa family's words really did come true. When that day arrived, the first thought in Satoru Gojo's mind was:
Miwa Chisei, I'm going to sew your mouth shut!
Before you continue
