Background / History

Family and Upbringing

Wen Yunmian is Wen Fu’an’s daughter by his principal wife. Although called “Second Miss,” she becomes the household’s eldest surviving legitimate daughter because her mother’s first daughter died young. Her father favors Madam Meng and Wen Leyan, while her parents’ estrangement leaves her isolated within the Marquis’s Residence 2 14 35 38.

Her maternal grandmother and aunt largely raise her. Her grandfather teaches her calligraphy, and the Gu family provides the affection and protection she lacks at home. In her previous life, they help her through difficulties but refuse to exploit her imperial influence for their own advancement 38.

Previous Life

After taking the Childbearing Pill, Wen Yunmian bears three children to the nearly infertile emperor. Pregnancy does not make her position secure: she faces attacks against herself and her children, loses favor, and repeatedly wakes from nightmares. She credits her survival and eventual authority to her own efforts, rather than simply to having sons 1.

Wen Leyan, imprisoned in the cold palace, repeatedly attempts to poison Wen Yunmian and her children. When Wen Yunmian visits out of lingering familial pity, Wen Leyan stabs her in the chest. Wen Yunmian survives after half a month unconscious and ultimately dies peacefully of old age 1.

Her father’s involvement with the Duke of State Protection’s household nearly destroys her position. Jun Chenyu eliminates both households and prepares a decree requiring his imperial noble consort to follow him in death. He dies before sealing it, allowing her to survive and help her son take the throne 18 32.

As empress dowager, she works with Chancellor Xie Yunjian to establish a prosperous period of peace. She also keeps male favorites during her later life 7 27.

Rebirth and Changed Ambition

Wen Yunmian awakens during the physical examination preceding her first palace entry. Wen Leyan’s unexpected demand for the Childbearing Pill reveals that her younger half-sister has also been reborn 1.

Rather than compete for the pill, Wen Yunmian chooses beauty despite its cost to fertility. She intends to reclaim influence without repeating the dangers of pregnancy, and recognizes that this new path requires access to court affairs as well as imperial favor 1 2 11.

Appearance

The Beauty Pill enhances Wen Yunmian overnight, chiefly improving her skin, hair, and figure rather than dramatically changing her facial features. Her appearance combines an innocent expression with striking sensuality 2 3.

  • Skin: Snowy-white, smooth, and repeatedly compared to flawless jade 2 3.
  • Eyes: Clear and lustrous, described as lychee-like, peach-blossom eyes, and foxlike beneath an otherwise innocent face 2 3 7.
  • Hair and features: Long, cloudlike hair, dark curling lashes, and scarlet lips 2 4.
  • Build: Petite, with a slender waist and full hips; her head barely reaches Jun Chenyu’s shoulder 1 5.
  • Resemblance: Bears some resemblance to the commoner woman who died saving Jun Chenyu 14.

Personality

Wen Yunmian is ambitious, patient, and willing to appear submissive when open resistance would endanger her. She accepts the emperor’s preferred explanation for Consort Shu’s violence rather than demanding immediate punishment. Her ambitions extend beyond motherhood: she reflects that, if women could rule as emperor, she would not have settled for being empress dowager 1 4.

She treats imperial favor as something to manage rather than trust. Jun Chenyu’s former suspicions and unfinished death decree make her determined to separate herself from her father’s political interests. Although attraction and old feelings briefly unsettle her, she later insists that she will not give Jun Chenyu her genuine affection again and dismisses his belated tenderness 18 19 32 50.

Her loyalty is selective but sincere. She seeks to save the empress out of gratitude and is deeply moved by the Gu family’s unconditional support. Conversely, she has little sympathy for attackers caught in the consequences of their own schemes 8 10 35 38.

As a mistress, she demands restraint from her servants. She explicitly forbids them from becoming arrogant or abusing others because she has gained favor 7.

She carefully controls the contrast between how others expect her to look or behave and what they actually encounter.

  • Uses garish portrait makeup and false moles to make the later revelation of her beauty more memorable 2 3 4.

Medicine

Wen Yunmian possesses medical knowledge that she deliberately conceals.

  • Detects newly active poison in Jun Chenyu through his appearance and pulse 21.
  • Takes his pulse convincingly while disguised as an imperial physician 29.
  • Consults Mi Yuheng when investigating dangerous substances rather than relying solely on her own judgment 24 46.

  • Negotiates for Xie Yunjian to become her eyes and ears at court 27.
  • Explains how appeals emphasizing Grand Preceptor Shang’s power and past merits could worsen the emperor’s suspicions 27 28.

  • Discusses Cao Gui’s military judgment from the Zuo Zhuan and connects military morale with the emperor’s treatment of General Qin Zhao’s sister, Consort Shu 41 42.
  • Uses these conversations to establish herself as a capable companion, not merely a beautiful consort 41.

Calligraphy and Handwriting Recognition

  • Recognizes that Madam Meng forged a letter in Wen Fu’an’s handwriting 11.
  • Practices with her right hand and orders those sheets burned while retaining her left-handed writing 11.
  • Continues practicing calligraphy during periods of neglect and political uncertainty 17 26 37.

Equipment / Items

  • Beauty Pill — A secret medicine supplied by the Wen household. Grants exceptional beauty while damaging fertility; Wen Yunmian deliberately accepts this trade-off 1 2.
  • Cosmetics and eyebrow powder — Used to diminish her apparent beauty in her portrait and draw false black moles before her first summons 2 3.
  • Imperial physician’s robe and medicine chest — Supplied through Mi Yuheng for her clandestine visit to Chanyang Palace 28 29.
  • Self-made silk garments — Concealed beneath the physician’s robe and later used to renew Jun Chenyu’s interest 28 31.
  • Cloudglow Brocade — Delivered in the empress’s name. Its unusual scent prompts an investigation into a suspected scheme 44 45 46.
  • Qiukui’s hairpin evidence — A hairpin from Consort Shu retained by Qiukui as proof of her involvement 33.

Relationships

  • Jun Chenyu — Emperor and lover. Wen Yunmian seeks his heart and protection while guarding against his suspicion, political calculations, and capacity to discard her 4 18 32 41 50.
  • Wen Leyan — Younger half-sister and fellow reborn rival. Previously stabbed Wen Yunmian; now attempts to appropriate her former path to power through childbirth 1 15 37.
  • Wen Fu’an — Father. Favors Madam Meng’s household and expects his daughters’ favor to preserve his position. Wen Yunmian eventually abandons plans to advance his household after he ignores her advice 2 35 38.

  • Madam Meng — Her father’s favored co-wife and Wen Leyan’s mother. Schemes against Wen Yunmian, forges a paternal letter, and predicts her downfall to the Gu family 2 11 37.
  • The Empress — Former protector whom Wen Yunmian regards with gratitude. She secretly uses her medical knowledge to try to prevent the empress’s remembered death 8 10 11.
  • Xie Yunjian — Trusted political partner and an enduring emotional attachment from her previous life. She renews their alliance and hopes he can live more freely in this lifetime 27 28.
  • Mi Yuheng — Physician and ally whose career she helps advance. Loved her in the previous life and readily assists her current investigations and clandestine visit 24 26 28 46.
  • Yun Yang and Yun Fei — Personal maids and trusted collaborators. Yun Yang’s martial arts and surveillance support her counterplots; Yun Fei helps conceal her medicine and monitor Wen Leyan 10 13 15 21 46.
  • The Gu family — Maternal relatives who offer unconditional protection. Wen Yunmian resolves to support them rather than continue propping up the Marquis’s Residence 38.
