After Hiruzen Sarutobi died sealing Orochimaru, Lin Guang awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan but hid its power, then helped drive Orochimaru’s group from Konoha. The village mourned and began rebuilding, while Lin Guang was promoted to chunin and agreed to train with Jiraiya and Naruto after the recovery effort.
After the Third Hokage’s death, Jiraiya left Konoha for Amegakure while Lin Guang and Naruto helped with reconstruction and reflected on their loss. Meanwhile, Sand Ninja discovered the Fourth Kazekage’s corpse, and Orochimaru remained in hiding after escaping Konoha.
Orochimaru accepted his defeat, while Konoha’s advisors asked Jiraiya to become Fifth Hokage after Sunagakure surrendered. Jiraiya refused and offered to search for Tsunade instead, as two strange men overheard Kakashi mention Sasuke.
Uchiha Itachi and Kisame Hoshigaki entered Konoha and fought Asuma Sarutobi and Kurenai Yuhi until Kakashi Hatake arrived. Meanwhile, Naruto ate ramen with Lin Guang, and Sasuke Uchiha sensed that someone had come to the village.
Kakashi and his allies confronted Uchiha Itachi and Kisame Hoshigaki, who came to Konoha searching for something, while Sasuke investigated the Uchiha clan’s stone tablet. Jiraiya invited Lin Guang and Naruto to leave the village with him; Lin Guang agreed, but Naruto refused.
Lin Guang followed a strange sensation to the Village-Guarding River, where he found Uchiha Itachi and Kisame Hoshigaki fighting Kakashi, Asuma, and Kurenai. When Itachi prepared to use Tsukuyomi, Lin Guang used his Mangekyō Sharingan to weaken the technique as the battle continued.
Kakashi endured Itachi's Tsukuyomi while Lin Guang secretly weakened the technique, and Kakashi deduced that Itachi and Kisame were pursuing Naruto as the Fourth Hokage's legacy. As Kisame prepared to kill the Konoha ninja, Might Guy arrived and struck him down.
Might Guy and the other Jonin drove Uchiha Itachi and Kisame Hoshigaki away, and Lin Guang stopped Itachi's Amaterasu from burning him. Lin Guang then joined Jiraiya and Naruto as they left Konoha for Naruto's training journey.
Naruto celebrated learning that he resembled the Fourth Hokage, while Jiraiya and Lin Guang continued guiding him outside Konoha. Meanwhile, Kisame Hoshigaki and Uchiha Itachi watched the trio from a distance, and Sasuke pushed himself to practice Chidori again; the chapter ended with Jiraiya teasing Naruto about Kakashi’s bell exercise.
After learning that Uchiha Itachi had returned and was seeking Naruto, Sasuke raced to Shukuba Town to find him. Naruto and Lin Guang trained at an inn while Jiraiya went out, and Sasuke searched the town for them.
Lin Guang and Naruto were confronted by Uchiha Itachi and Kisame Hoshigaki, who came to take Naruto, until Sasuke arrived and attacked his older brother. As the fight escalated, Lin Guang used Ice Release and Itachi countered with a Great Fireball, leaving the battle underway.
Jiraiya arrived in time to stop Kisame Hoshigaki from attacking Naruto and Lin Guang, and the Akatsuki revealed that capturing Naruto was their top priority. Sasuke challenged Uchiha Itachi but was overwhelmed and trapped in Tsukuyomi, while Naruto charged forward to confront Itachi.
Lin Guang pursued Uchiha Itachi and Kisame Hoshigaki after they escaped Jiraiya’s Toad Mouth Bind, freezing and genjutsu-striking them before confronting Itachi. In Tsukuyomi, Itachi revealed how Shimura Danzō’s seizure of Shisui Uchiha’s eye led him to slaughter the Uchiha Clan to protect Sasuke, and Lin Guang learned Itachi had been a double agent.
Lin Guang learned from Itachi that the man who helped massacre the Uchiha clan was not the real Madara, then let Itachi and Kisame leave. After returning to Jiraiya and Naruto, Lin Guang contained Amaterasu and secretly used genjutsu to hide his Sharingan from Might Guy, while Kisame noticed Lin Guang’s Sharingan outside the village.
After Uchiha Itachi and Kisame escaped, Jiraiya arranged for Sasuke to receive treatment and set out with Naruto and Lin Guang to find Tsunade. As they traveled, Lin Guang considered leaving the group so he could focus on developing his Mangekyō Sharingan.
Lin Guang told Jiraiya he had awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan and learned that Uchiha Itachi had been a double agent protecting Konoha and Sasuke. He left Naruto and Jiraiya to train alone, intending to master his new abilities as the Akatsuki threatened Naruto and the village.
Lin Guang left Jiraiya and Naruto to pursue training, while Jiraiya encouraged Naruto by revealing that Lin Guang was nearing the strength of Kisame Hoshigaki and Uchiha Itachi. After Might Guy warned two Konoha guards about Itachi’s attack on Sasuke, Lin Guang considered disguising himself and infiltrating the Akatsuki.
Lin Guang learned from Jiraiya that the Akatsuki was based in Amegakure and traveled there to investigate. He entered the impoverished village disguised as Uchiha Hikari and began relying on two local siblings for help.
Lin Guang bought food and masks in Amegakure, then followed Mingkong Qian and Mingkong Zhi to find lodging. They led him into an ambush by a gang of robbers, and the chapter ended as the bearded leader fired a barrage of senbon at him.
Lin Guang defeated the Amegakure ninjas who attacked him, imprisoned them in ice, and killed them after Mingkong Qian warned that their god would target them. He found a house to use as shelter and created a shadow clone to guard him while he rested.
Yuri Mikaze discovered ice containing human remains in Amegakure’s sewers and reported it to the leader, who recognized unusual dōjutsu power in the Ice Release and decided to seek out its creator. Lin Guang realized he had left traces behind and set out to gather intelligence, while the leader and Konan examined the ice.
Lin Guang surveyed Amegakure and used Genjutsu to question Yuri Mikaze about the village’s leader and Konan. He learned the leader met Yuri in the central tower but uncovered no information about the Akatsuki, leaving his investigation unresolved.
Lin Guang questioned Yuri Mikaze about the Akatsuki, but Yuri’s head exploded before he could answer, leaving Lin Guang with a mysterious black nail that triggered a vision of a purple-eyed figure. After unlocking Conqueror’s Haki to resist its pressure, Lin Guang was confronted by Konan, who demanded he come with her over Yuri’s death.
Konan brought Lin Guang to Pain, who explained the Akatsuki’s plans and invited him to learn about the organization. Lin Guang concealed his knowledge with genjutsu and pretended to be shocked as Pain described its ambitions.
Lin Guang joined the Akatsuki as its ninth member after Pain explained how the organization funded its plans, and Konan showed him how she made Explosive Tags. Meanwhile, Naruto traveled with Jiraiya, enjoyed a day of eating and games, then found Jiraiya’s bankbook and confronted him about his savings.
