Deliberate Jade Blade use 8 Confirms that the blade works outside an immediate personal emergency, severing a demon’s tail and cutting through its hiding place.
Multi-target Jade Blade control 10 Repeated demon battles improve her proficiency; a light swing can produce multiple blades that strike separate targets.
Automatic defensive barrier 13 20 The jade protects her against physical attacks and later severs Naraku’s attacking tentacles without requiring a deliberate slash.

Background / History

Transmigration and Escape

Xu Zhiqiu’s electrical socket explodes at home, causing her to lose consciousness. She awakens in an unfamiliar world and immediately encounters Onigumo, a bandit who restrains and sexually threatens her. He treats her twisted ankle but prevents her from leaving; she escapes when a demon attacks their shelter in a ruined temple 1 2.

After scavenging clothes and sandals from a pillaged village, she seeks food under the false name Akiko. Onigumo finds her, kills the family sheltering her, and overpowers her again. Her jade pendant injures his eye during his attempted assault, allowing her to flee. She cannot bring herself to kill him while he is unconscious, but takes his sword and retaliates by kicking him before leaving 3 4 5.

The Centipede Hag attacks her during her flight. After an ordinary sword fails to injure the demon, Xu Zhiqiu discovers the jade’s ranged cutting ability and splits her attacker apart. She leaves believing the demon dead, unaware that it regenerates 5.

Life in Kaede’s Village

Kikyo and Kaede give Xu Zhiqiu shelter and treat her neck wounds. Their names allow her to recognize the setting as the world of Inuyasha, approximately fifty years before the main story. Her memories of the series are incomplete, but she recalls Kikyo’s fate and Naraku’s role in it 6.

She settles in Kaede’s Village, where Kikyo arranges the construction of a house for her. Xu Zhiqiu plants vegetables, hunts, preserves food, and helps defend the surrounding settlements. Kikyo later entrusts her with protecting the village and the Shikon Jewel while she travels with Inuyasha 8 14 15.

When the severely burned Onigumo is brought into Kikyo’s care, Xu Zhiqiu helps treat him and subsequently brings food, blankets, and fresh dressings. She initially justifies keeping him alive as punishment rather than forgiveness. His attachment to her becomes increasingly possessive, and she explicitly rejects the idea of marrying him 12 13 16 17.

Naraku and the Great Ming

Onigumo offers his soul to demons so that he can move again, obtain the Shikon Jewel, and claim Xu Zhiqiu. The resulting Naraku repeatedly approaches her, tests the jade’s limitations, and attacks her. She warns Kikyo and Inuyasha about his origin and interest in the jewel 17 18 20 22.

When Naraku attempts to pierce her throat, the jade transports her to the Great Ming. There she befriends Gu Weny an, an orphan whose family and clanspeople were killed by an eight-tailed fox demon. Xu Zhiqiu rescues the girl and returns alone to fight the fox, eventually destroying it despite severe burns and blood loss 23 24 25 26.

The jade draws her injured body inside itself. A childlike voice addresses her as its master, explains that its spiritual power is nearly exhausted, and warns that it may need fifty or sixty years of sleep. Xu Zhiqiu loses consciousness and remains asleep for fifty years 26 37.

Return and Inuyama Castle

Xu Zhiqiu awakens healed and physically strengthened, but no longer knows where her jade is. She earns money washing dishes and repays a stallholder who bought her clothes. Naraku finds her, admits his role in Kikyo’s death and Inuyasha’s sealing, then knocks her unconscious when she tries to leave 27 28 38.

At Inuyama Castle, Naraku is impersonating a human young lord named Inuyasha. Xu Zhiqiu agrees to pose as his fiancée to prevent an arranged marriage. She urges him to distinguish his own identity and feelings from Onigumo’s, but their growing intimacy remains complicated by his jealousy, surveillance, and refusal to let her move away 30 31 32.

She eventually leaves to work as a wandering exorcist. After the Shikon Jewel shatters, she begins collecting shards in the hope of preventing Naraku from creating more enemies and meeting his original fate. She also warns the Yōkai Exorcist Village of an approaching attack and fights alongside its defenders 33 34 35 36.

Kikyo’s Return and the Shikon Jewel

Xu Zhiqiu reunites with the resurrected Kikyo, explains her disappearance, and accompanies her while they search for shards and help wounded soldiers. She admits that she likes Naraku a little, but intends eventually to reclaim the jewel from him and make it disappear permanently 37 38 39 40.

Her involvement with Naraku does not stop her from helping his opponents. At the Cave of Evil Aura, she breaks a seal and assists Kikyo, Kagome, and Miroku during the collapse. When questioned afterward, she rejects the assumption that helping Naraku means she supports all his actions 42 43.

After returning to the castle, she gives Naraku shards obtained from Kikyo and meets his incarnation Kanna. Later, she leaves again to pursue a peaceful home of her own. Peach Fruit Man shrinks her during an attempt to obtain his jewel shard, but Naraku intervenes, defeats the threat with the stolen gourd, and restores her size 45 48 49 50.

Appearance

  • Skin and eyes: Pale skin with a faint rosy glow, clear, lustrous eyes, and red lips 1 3 21.
  • Hair: Thick, glossy black hair, commonly worn in a high ponytail or a bun secured with a wooden hairpin; leaves bangs and two face-framing locks loose 13 15 29.
  • Clothing: Favors brightly colored outfits and enjoys rouge, face powder, and eyeshadow. Chooses clothes and trousers that allow freer movement when traveling 31 32 33.
  • Unchanging appearance: Tells Kikyo that time in this world does not affect her appearance; remains uncertain about the full extent of her longevity 38.
  • After the fifty-year sleep: Her battle wounds leave no scars, and she notices that her skin has become softer and dewier 27 29.

Personality

Xu Zhiqiu values independence and ordinary comforts. She initially declares that she wants to remain single, seeks money and a property deed in return for maintaining Naraku’s public engagement story, and repeatedly tries to leave the castle. Her long-term goal is a quiet home and a peaceful life rather than continual demon hunting 12 31 32 48.

She is practical about survival: she scavenges, lies when necessary to obtain shelter, stocks winter provisions, and charges for exorcisms. She admires Kikyo’s selflessness while acknowledging that she could not devote herself to unpaid service in the same way 3 4 7 14 33.

Her compassion coexists with resentment and sharp humor. She refuses to kill the unconscious Onigumo, yet later keeps him alive partly so he will suffer. She comforts children and Kikyo, protects strangers, and teases both Inuyasha and Naraku. Despite developing feelings for Naraku, she becomes angry when he attempts to probe her heart through his illusions 5 13 24 38 43 44 48.

  • Can split into multiple blades against separate targets and cut through trees as well as demons 8 10.
  • Its early cutting attacks cannot completely purify demon remains, allowing regenerative enemies to survive dismemberment 5 8.
  • Naraku establishes that it cannot harm him while he possesses a human body, although it can sever his demonic tentacles 18 20.
  • Requires the jade; after her slumber and its disappearance, she cannot use the technique 38.

The jade reacts independently to danger and possesses a consciousness, later communicating through a childlike voice 20 26.

  • Its protective barrier normally appears during physical attacks, not merely to keep demon blood off her clothes 13.
  • Can transport Xu Zhiqiu away from lethal danger and shelter her body inside itself for recovery 23 26.

After awakening, Xu Zhiqiu can channel spiritual power through weapons without relying on the missing jade 33 38.

  • Uses an ordinary iron sword to dismember and kill a centipede demon 33.

  • Helps wounded soldiers and feeds hungry people while traveling with Kikyo 40.
