Background / History
Annie’s memories of her father combine harsh demands to keep training with a promise that he would stand beside her even if the whole world turned against her. His wish that she return alive remains important to her, and his presence back home repeatedly keeps her committed to Marley’s mission 12 17 41.
As a child, Annie befriended Norman. Their first meeting began when he tried to protect her from older children, only to be beaten himself; Annie drove the attackers away. Afterward, he visited her with sweets and asked to learn her fighting techniques. She later remembered his wounded, needle-marked arms and being told that he had died during experiments 12 16 36.
Annie was selected as a Warrior and entered the walls alongside Reiner and Bertholdt to search for the Coordinate Power. During the fall of Shiganshina, the three discussed an apparent sign of an intelligent Titan and Reiner’s plan to breach the wall. Reiner later explicitly stated that Annie was not the one who destroyed Shiganshina and Wall Maria 6 10 41.
Appearance
Annie is petite, with fair skin, pale blond hair, ice-blue eyes, and a usually impassive expression 10 12 27.
- Hair: Usually tied into a bun; she also wears it loose during the picnic 10 20 21.
- Clothing: Wears a white hooded top while following Kenny near the royal palace 35.
- Rings: Wears two rings on her right hand—one on the index finger with a concealed sharp hook, and a plain ring on the middle finger 35.
- Stature: Considerably shorter than Yago; by their third training year, the top of her head barely reaches his chin 37.
Personality
Annie’s cold manner and formidable fighting skills discourage most cadets from approaching her. She has few friends, speaks little to anyone except Yago, and receives a low cooperation score at graduation. Her peers call her the “Ice Queen” 30 40.
Her reserve conceals practical kindness. She repays Yago’s gift of water with bread, helps Hannah fasten her equipment, and gently feeds and pets a kitten. Her concern for Yago usually appears through brief questions, warnings, or small gestures rather than open declarations 11 12 20 25 29.
Annie does not accept Marley’s claim that the islanders are devils. She challenges Reiner’s hypocrisy about Christa and eventually judges the people inside the walls kinder than those in her homeland. Nevertheless, fear for her father and reluctance to expose her companions leave her unable to stop their mission 17 41.
Her attachment to Yago makes secrecy especially painful. She believes he has lost his memories and fears that revealing her identity will destroy their renewed closeness. When Kenny threatens him, however, she becomes willing to abandon the mission and expose her power to protect him 20 36.
Abilities & Skills
Hand-to-Hand Combat
Annie’s precise technique allows her to overwhelm Yago despite his superior raw strength and stamina 22.
- Uses rapid kicks, elbow strikes, arm control, leg hooks, and throws to disrupt an opponent’s balance 22 35.
- Evades Yago’s powerful attacks and exploits openings rather than matching him force for force 22.
- Trains Yago, whose fighting skills improve rapidly under her instruction; Eren subsequently learns some of her techniques through him 23.
- Limit: Cannot land a blow on Kenny. He dislocates her wrist, and the prolonged exchange exhausts her 35.
Physical Conditioning
- Possesses enough strength to hit harder than an average adult, despite her small build 21.
- Maintains strong stamina during the recruits’ initial running test and withstands the heat during wilderness training 10 27.
- Dodges Kenny’s gunfire on instinct and forces her dislocated wrist back into place while under threat 35.
Omni-Directional Mobility Gear and Blade Combat
- Receives praise for flawless cutting technique and exceptional combat skills in her graduation evaluation 40.
- Uses mobility gear during forest exercises and participates in cutting down Titan models 37.
- Is assigned to the rafter attack team in Armin’s plan to clear the Trost supply station 50.
Concealed Titan Power
Annie prepares to use a hidden power when ordinary combat cannot protect her or Yago, but the supplied encounters end without showing her transformation 35 36.
- Deploys the sharp hook in her ring as she prepares to reveal her power against Kenny 35 36.
- Hesitates because exposure could compromise the mission and her relationship with Yago 35 36.
- Reacts simultaneously with Reiner and Bertholdt when Yago transforms elsewhere in Trost 47.
- Her Titan form, its name, and its specific abilities are not revealed in these passages.
Infiltration and Surveillance
- Repeatedly enters Wall Sina and the Royal Capital to seek information about the Founding Titan 17 20 31 35.
- Follows Kenny for two days after observing him enter both the Central First Military Police Brigade and the royal palace 35.
- Considers joining the Military Police Brigade to gain access to the king and the Founding Titan 20 37.
- Limit: Her first three Wall Sina investigations yield almost no useful information; Kenny discovers her during the fourth 35.
Drawing
- Begins learning from Yago after receiving his illustrated apology 12 15.
- Within a month, produces sketches that Yago considers only slightly worse than his own 17.

- Hooked ring — Worn on her right index finger; releases a sharp spike or hook, including when Yago startles her in class 12 35.

- Notebook and drawings — Uses the notebook for sketching and keeps drawings from Yago inside it 17 30.

- Father — Her strongest tie to home; his wish for her survival and his continued waiting influence her mission decisions 12 17 41.
- Reiner — Fellow Warrior whose demands increasingly alienate her. She resents his interference, confronts him over an implied threat to Yago, and rejects his plan to breach Wall Rose 10 31 41.
- Bertholdt — Fellow Warrior who privately has feelings for her. He dislikes Reiner treating her as a tool and tries to ease their confrontation during winter training 15 26 31.
- Kenny Ackerman — Surveillance target who discovers her and nearly kills her near the royal palace 35 36.
- Hannah — Fellow cadet whom Annie helps with her training equipment 12.

- Conceals severe distress as the stranded cadets run short of gas, bracing against a wall with tears in her eyes 48.
- Reunites with Yago at the supply station and participates in Armin’s successful operation to eliminate the Titans inside and replenish the cadets’ gas 50.
