Background / History
Unknown origins
Yago awakens with severe memory loss near a group of dissolving Titan corpses. He remembers his name but cannot explain why he is outside the Walls. Vig teaches him about the world and takes responsibility for bringing him to the Survey Corps’ main force 1.
He privately retains indistinct memories of tall buildings, a language he identifies as Japanese, and a crowded place resembling a concentration camp. A recurring golden flash feels especially important to him. These fragments lead him to wonder whether he has undergone transmigration, but he never establishes that explanation as fact; the memories gradually fade 1 11 24.
Vig’s death and Lucia’s care
During the journey, Titans kill Giso and mortally injure Vig while he protects Yago. Yago transforms and fights the attackers, but cannot save Vig. Before dying, Vig asks the Scouts to protect him, and Erwin assigns Scott to look after the boy 2 3.
Yago blames himself for Vig’s death and asks to train for the Survey Corps so he can avenge him. Vig’s widow, Lucia, subsequently takes him in and treats him as her own son. Her reassurance changes his resolve from guilt alone into a commitment to protect her and everything Vig valued 3 4.
When Shiganshina falls, Yago pushes Lucia out of the path of falling debris and suffers devastating injuries. Lucia calls herself his mother as she tries to free him, a declaration that brings him joy despite his condition. He later produces a partial Titan body to repel an attacker, catches the unconscious Lucia, and regenerates his crushed legs 5 6.
By 848, Yago lives with Lucia, Carla, Eren, Mikasa, and Armin. He has secretly practiced transforming but keeps his power hidden even from Lucia, intending to use it only to protect those close to him 8.
Appearance
Yago has black hair and dark eyes, with a tall build for his age 3 8 37.
- Hair: Tousled as a child; described as short during his later training and the Trost battle 3 37 46.
- Build: Nearly 170 cm at thirteen and considerably taller by his third year of training 8 37.
- Uniform: Wears the Training Corps uniform, later supplemented by two custom devices strapped to his calves 8 37.
- Titan form: Initially fifteen meters tall, later seventeen meters; has black hair, scarlet eyes, powerful muscles, and knife-like teeth 2 18 31.
- Transformation aftereffects: Muscle connections leave marks beneath his eyes when he exits the Titan’s nape 18 47.
Personality
Yago is sociable, teasing, and eager to help. Within little more than ten days in Shiganshina, he befriends most of the market’s stallholders through conversation, small favors, and flattery. His playfulness also causes trouble: startling Annie, pulling down her hood, and teasing her height all provoke retaliation 5 12 20 37.
His strongest motivation is protecting others. Vig’s death leaves him deeply guilty, while Lucia’s affection gives him a family he refuses to lose. He extends that loyalty to fellow cadets, risking exposure of his power to save Bertholdt and later choosing to lead stranded soldiers rather than escape alone 3 4 28 49.
He is confident in his talent and openly wants to become the Survey Corps’ strongest soldier. That confidence can become impulsiveness, particularly when he uses mobility gear without permission. Nevertheless, he is cautious about revealing his Titan Power and initially cannot stomach the prospect of killing people to preserve its secrecy 19 25.
Yago’s curiosity draws him toward researchers, machinery, and the mysteries of Titans. He understands why officers distrust his unexplained background, but their suspicion still hurts him. His determination to uncover his past ultimately outweighs the appeal of a safer life in the Military Police Brigade 34 37 40.
Abilities & Skills
Fate Titan Transformation
Yago can create and control a large Titan body while remaining inside its nape 18.
- Activation: Lengthens his metallic-looking fingernails and drives them into his palm; yellow lightning and steam accompany the transformation 18.
- Control: Shares the Titan’s vision and can perform deliberate stances, jumps, punches, kicks, and grappling movements 2 18.
- Strength: Can punch through enormous trees, crush Titan heads, and kill Titans by biting or stomping their napes 18 47.
- Partial manifestation: Can produce an incomplete body, as demonstrated while protecting Lucia 6.
- Duration: Estimates that his fifteen-meter form lasts barely two hours, with active fighting likely shortening that limit 18.
- Exhaustion: Nearly forty Titan kills during Trost leave him struggling even in transformed form 47.
- Secrecy: Avoids approaching allied soldiers as a Titan because they could attack his nape without recognizing him 47.
Regeneration
Yago heals injuries rapidly, with steam rising from the affected tissue 6 19 36.
- Regenerates his mangled legs during the fall of Shiganshina 6.
- Quickly heals small cuts and punctures to his hands 19 30.
- Recovers from Kenny’s attack on his arm before their confrontation ends 36.
- Can deliberately remove the facial marks left by a transformation 47.
Enhanced Physique and Perception
Titan Power strengthens Yago’s human body as well as his transformed one 8 33.
- Strength and endurance: Outperforms other children, leads training runs, and continues fighting well beyond ordinary recruits’ limits 5 10 22.
- Reflexes: Catches Keith’s punch and reacts quickly enough to resist his initial attempts at restraint 9.
- Surveillance warning: Feels a powerful chill when someone secretly watches him, although the sensation does not automatically identify the observer 8 9.
- Muscular perception: Can roughly discern other cadets’ muscle distribution and use that awareness to help them balance 13.
- Limits: His confidence against armed soldiers does not extend to muskets aimed at him from long range 33.
Combat and Leadership
Yago combines exceptional physical ability with techniques learned from Mikasa and Annie 8 23.
- Unarmed combat: Uses throws, limb catches, and leg hooks. Annie initially defeats him through superior technique despite his strength and stamina 22 28.
- Omni-Directional Mobility Gear: Performs sharp turns, spins, trunk-assisted leaps, and low-altitude recoveries; Keith compares his early performance to elite soldiers 25.
- Leg-blade fighting: Spins in midair to create cutting arcs with calf-mounted blades, including an attack that blinds an Abnormal Titan 37 46.
- Improvised attacks: Uses a thrown stone to interrupt a thief holding Bertholdt at gunpoint 28.
- Leadership: Organizes a cadet rescue party and rallies roughly twenty stranded soldiers for an assault on the supply station 28 49.
- Equipment limits: Even his skill cannot compensate for exhausted gas reserves or blades too dull to cut a Titan’s nape 47.
Technical and Artistic Skills
Yago has practical talents beyond combat 5 12 34.
- Drawing: Produces a detailed portrait and a chibi apology drawing for Annie, then teaches her to sketch 12 15.
- Equipment repair: Studies mobility-gear components with Lynch and eventually repairs the damaged set he obtained from smugglers 34 47.
- Custom design: Develops rotating lower-leg blade mounts using mechanisms supplied by Lynch 34 37.
- Arithmetic: Tallies market accounts quickly and accurately 5.
- Trapping: Uses a trap based on his hazy memories to catch a rabbit 16.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Omni-Directional Mobility Gear — His main means of movement and Titan combat; relies on gas, grappling cables, and replaceable blades 24 25.
- Custom calf-mounted blade devices — Rotating mechanisms with sword grips that let him attach a blade to each leg. Other cadets cannot master the equipment as he does 34 37.
- Repaired reserve mobility gear — Obtained from smugglers in damaged condition, restored through his own repairs, and hidden in a wooden house. Replaces his depleted battlefield set during Trost 19 47.
- Vig’s cloak — Keeps it after Vig’s death 3.
- Metallic-looking fingernails — Can lengthen them voluntarily and use them to inflict the injuries that trigger transformation 18 21.
Relationships
- Vig — Rescuer and early guardian. His death inspires Yago’s commitment to the Survey Corps and to protecting others 1 2 3 4.
- Lucia — Adoptive mother. Gives him the familial affection he feels he previously lacked; he protects her during Shiganshina’s destruction 4 5 6.
- Annie Leonhart — Close friend, combat teacher, drawing student, and romantic interest. Yago feels she is deeply familiar and later openly acknowledges to himself that he loves her. Annie’s memories indicate that they knew each other before his amnesia, though he does not remember their earlier relationship 12 20 23 36 41.
- Eren Yeager — Friend, housemate, and fellow recruit. Yago intends to protect him but initially does not share his contempt for life within the Walls 5 8 46.
- Mikasa Ackerman — Friend and early combat teacher. Trusts Yago to keep Eren safe during Trost 8 46.
- Armin Arlert — Friend and housemate. Yago helps him complete a training run and worries after he is injured during mobility-gear practice 8 10 25.
- Erwin Smith — Orders the Scouts to protect Yago and permits him to train toward joining the Survey Corps 3.
- Hange — Tries to comfort him after Vig’s death and make him smile 3.
- Scott — Survey Corps logistics leader and caretaker. Later takes Yago to Wall Sina and interrupts the confrontation with Kenny 3 33 36.
- Keith — Instructor who disciplines Yago’s impulsiveness while recognizing his extraordinary potential; worries about his determination to join the Survey Corps 9 25 37.
- Kenny — Dangerous opponent who suspects Yago has Ackerman blood. Neither Kenny’s suspicion nor Yago’s appearance confirms that ancestry 36.
- Commander Pyxis — Questions Yago’s undocumented origins, leaving him uncomfortable despite understanding the grounds for suspicion 39 40.
- Lisa Vald — Rescued by Yago during Trost. Promises that the Vald Family will repay him and offers assistance in the Royal Capital 44 46.
- Levi — Benchmark for Yago’s ambitions. Yago resolves to surpass him if he joins the Survey Corps 33.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Training with the 104th Cadet Corps
- Enrolls alongside Eren, Mikasa, and Armin in 848 8.
- Stands out in running, balance training, and mobility-gear use; helps weaker cadets despite his competitive streak 10 13 25.
- Builds a close relationship with Annie through drawing lessons, outings, and combat practice 12 15 20 23.
- Stops thieves attempting to steal the cadets’ equipment, then helps rescue another class from their accomplices 28 29.
- Becomes the top cadet and develops a fighting style built around custom leg-mounted blades 37.
Lost Memories and the Fate Titan
- The word “warrior” triggers a painful memory fragment while he overhears Reiner and Bertholdt 13.
- Recurring visions feature a white desert, a pillar of light, an invisible barrier, and a bound-chair scene 8 21 30.
- In one vision, mysterious figures call him the Fate Titan; a voice addresses another figure as Eren. Yago forgets the encounter on waking but retains the Titan’s name 21.
- Sees a sand-piling girl become an enormous Titan. A white-coated figure subsequently calls him “Norman” and a “perfect creation” intended to make Marley regret its actions; the figure’s identity remains unknown 30.
- Pyxis discovers no record of Yago living in Shiganshina before the Survey Corps returned. Yago increasingly suspects he originated outside the Walls 39 40.
- Chooses the Survey Corps partly because a comfortable life would not help him investigate his missing past 37.
Battle of Trost
- Transfers command of the 34th Class to Thomas and joins Yuwen’s squad to rescue Lisa Vald 44.
- Kills five Titans on the approach and an Abnormal Titan during the rescue, then carries Lisa to the inner gate 44 46.
- Leaves the rear guard to search for his classmates. After finding Yuwen dead, loses his remaining gas and usable blades while facing another Abnormal Titan 46 47.
- Transforms out of human sight, defeats the Abnormal, and kills nearly forty Titans before returning to human form and retrieving his reserve gear 47.
- Learns that Thomas and Ili have died, rallies stranded survivors, and leads an assault to replenish their gas at the supply station 49.
- Encounters a pointy-eared Titan killing other Titans. Concludes that it must be a human transformer like himself, but prioritizes finding his companions inside the station 50.
