Background / History

Lelouch’s mother, Marianne, was assassinated inside the imperial palace. At nine years old, he sought an audience with Charles to demand recognition of her murder. Charles dismissed the matter, called both Marianne and Lelouch weak, and ordered Lelouch and Nunnally sent to the Island Nation as diplomatic tools. Lelouch was dragged away after being frightened into helpless silence 5 6.

During the same period, Ask abruptly replaced his previously patient manner with coldness, telling Lelouch that he was too weak and that his duty was to protect Nunnally. Lelouch could not reconcile this behavior with the affectionate brother he remembered 2.

The imperial family later assumed that Lelouch and Nunnally had died during the war. Three years before Ask’s later visit to the Island Nation, Ask arranged for the siblings to live at the Ashford family’s school under changed names. Lelouch became Lelouch Lamperouge and was to be treated as an ordinary student 15.

Appearance

  • Imperial attire: Wears clothing reserved for imperial princes during his childhood audience with Charles 5.
  • Student identity: Appears in an Ashford Academy school uniform while watching the announcement of Suzaku’s execution 13.
  • Zero disguise: Conceals himself behind a mask and black robe or cloak when conducting resistance operations 20 27.

Personality

Lelouch is intelligent, calculating, and reluctant to trust others. He generally relies on his own judgment rather than accepting C.C.’s advice without examination. Ask considers him willing to use capable people regardless of race, but distinguishes that willingness from genuine trust 18 29.

His hostility toward Britannia’s imperial family is rooted in Marianne’s death and Charles’s rejection. As Zero, he deliberately presents the Black Knights as protectors of the weak rather than enemies of all Britannians. This distinction is meant to attract the Island Nation’s oppressed population without alienating ordinary Britannians or other ethnic groups 6 13 27.

His leadership combines idealistic rhetoric with a desire for unquestioned obedience. He seeks a victory so extraordinary that his followers will believe they cannot win without Zero. C.C. nevertheless judges him inexperienced and overconfident, and later points out that his management knowledge is largely theoretical 14 29 43.

Nunnally’s safety overrides his organizational plans: her kidnapping delays both his meeting with Kaguya and his intended Chinese Federation negotiations. He also feels unable to face Shirley after learning that her father died in the Narita landslide he caused 43 44.

Abilities & Skills

Geass

Lelouch uses Geass to control people and secure access, equipment, and favorable circumstances 20 36 42.

  • Activation requirement: Requires eye contact; Knightmare cockpits make reaching military targets difficult 14.
  • Equipment acquisition: Uses it to purchase standard and outdated Knightmares from multiple factions 20.
  • Infiltration: Takes control of a mountain lookout post and infiltrates the Kyoto Six Houses’ premises 36 42.
  • Exposure risk: Recognizes that openly using it during Suzaku’s rescue could reveal the ability through Jeremiah’s abnormal behavior 19.
  • Limits against C.C.: Cannot force the immortal witch to cooperate when she refuses his plans 40.
  • Contingency planning: Proposes using Geass on Chinese Federation leaders if ordinary negotiations fail 43.

Strategy and Battlefield Command

Lelouch compensates for the Black Knights’ inferior numbers and equipment through preparation, terrain, and analysis of enemy behavior 28 30 37.

  • Establishes approach routes, rally points, and fallback orders before the Narita operation 30.
  • Uses the Guren’s radiant wave to trigger a landslide, destroy Britannian forces, and break an encirclement 37.
  • Exploits Cornelia’s determination to defeat Zero, drawing her toward a trap rather than allowing her an honorable victory 37.
  • Orders retreat when Monica’s superior machine makes capturing Cornelia untenable 38.
  • Counters Mao after understanding his mind-reading ability, providing the planning while Suzaku supplies the physical force needed to rescue Nunnally 44 46.

Propaganda and Political Planning

Lelouch builds Zero’s authority through public spectacle, carefully chosen targets, and negotiated support 27 28 42.

  • Frames the Black Knights’ mission around resisting those who abuse power, not indiscriminately attacking Britannians 27.
  • Replaces a planned live debut with prerecorded broadcasts to reduce the danger of Ask intervening 28.
  • Uses the Narita victory to strengthen his negotiating position with the Kyoto Six Houses 35 40.
  • Secures Kyoto support through a private meeting with Taizo Fujiwara, who recognizes him from his childhood exile 42.
  • Assigns specialists to technology, intelligence, and personal protection, though C.C. warns that he must remain involved in management to retain authority 42 43.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Zero’s mask and black clothing — Conceal his identity during operations and public appearances 20 27.
  • Handgun — Points it at Euphemia during the hotel crisis and at his own head while demanding the Black Knights’ trust at Narita 27 36.
  • Phone and counter-surveillance device — Used to issue covert squad orders from Ashford Academy 30.
  • Personal Knightmare — Pilots a machine during the advance toward Cornelia at Narita; its model is not specified 37.
  • Abandoned factory base — Bought with gambling winnings in the sparsely populated Harbor area 20.
  • Black Knights’ Knightmares — Initially include fewer than twenty usable machines, many standard or outdated models obtained through Geass 20 28.

Relationships

  • Nunnally — Younger sister and a central motivation for his activities. He enlists Suzaku to rescue her when Mao kidnaps her 2 44 46.
  • Ask vi Britannia — Elder brother, feared political opponent, and secret sponsor of Lelouch’s growth. Lelouch’s anger toward him is tangled with lingering attachment; he questions whether Ask’s childhood affection was genuine 2 27 42.
  • Charles — Father and emperor. His dismissal of Marianne’s murder and treatment of the siblings as diplomatic tools deepen Lelouch’s hostility toward the imperial family 5 6.
  • Marianne — Mother whose assassination prompts Lelouch’s confrontation with Charles 5.
  • C.C. — Grants him Geass and advises him in exchange for fulfilling an undisclosed wish. Lelouch trusts her more than most followers but remains suspicious of her knowledge and motives; she secretly works for Ask 14 18 28 43.
  • Suzaku Kururugi — Closest friend. Lelouch rescues him from execution and later relies on him to help recover Nunnally 14 19 46.
  • Kallen Kouzuki / Stadtfeld — Early follower and skilled pilot whom Lelouch chooses for his personal guard. She impersonates Zero during the Kyoto negotiations, while also secretly receiving instructions from Ask 28 35 42.
  • Cornelia — Military adversary and intended capture target at Narita. Lelouch avoids killing her or holding her for long because he fears provoking Ask 29 30.
  • Euphemia — Royal hostage whom he threatens but orders his followers not to harm. He believes killing her would compel Ask to intervene 27.
  • Kaname Ohgi — Respected resistance member whose influence Lelouch must accommodate. Lelouch judges him unsuitable for major responsibilities and considers giving him a prestigious position with little actual authority 40 43.
  • Taizo Fujiwara — Kyoto Six Houses leader who recognizes Lelouch and becomes his partner after private negotiations 42.
  • Empress Kaguya — Potential ally and second-in-command whom Lelouch considers approaching to gain control over Kyoto. Unknown to him, Ask has already pressured her to infiltrate the Black Knights 41 43.
  • Shirley — Lelouch feels unable to face her because her father died in the landslide he caused at Narita 43.
  • Mao — Geass wielder who kidnaps Nunnally and learns Lelouch’s identity through mind reading. Lelouch regards him as a threat capable of destroying the Black Knights from within 44 46.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Suzaku’s Execution and Early Resistance

  • Lelouch condemns the planned execution of Suzaku as the punishment of an innocent person. He rescues him with only three companions, attracting additional recruits 13 19.
  • He fails to recognize that the execution is a trap arranged by Ask to test him. Ask intends Lelouch to become Britannia’s greatest enemy, draw attention, and eliminate opponents from whom Ask can then benefit 14.
  • The rescue leaves Lelouch concerned that Ask may discover Geass through Jeremiah’s behavior, pushing him to accelerate his next move 19.

Lake Kawaguchi and the Black Knights’ Debut

  • Lelouch exploits the hotel hostage crisis to launch the Black Knights as defenders of the powerless. His forces enter with Cornelia’s permission, kill the Liberation Front members inside, and rescue the hostages 27.
  • He spares Euphemia to avoid forcing Ask into direct action, then leaves before broadcasting the organization’s prerecorded debut 27 28.
  • The publicity brings recruits, but Lelouch acknowledges that the Black Knights remain incapable of a head-on battle with Cornelia 28.

Battle of the Narita Mountains

  • Lelouch deliberately chooses a desperate battlefield to create a “miracle” that will secure unconditional trust in Zero 29.
  • When his followers panic at being surrounded, he points a pistol at his own head and challenges them to kill him if they cannot trust him 36.
  • His landslide plan breaks the encirclement and annihilates General Alex’s forces. Monica’s intervention prevents Cornelia’s capture and forces a retreat 37 38 40.
  • Although Britannian media claim victory, Kyoto and the resistance groups recognize the battle as a major Black Knights success 40.

Kyoto Support and the Planned Tohdoh Rescue

  • With Kallen posing as Zero, Lelouch infiltrates the Kyoto Six Houses and establishes formal cooperation with Taizo Fujiwara 42.
  • He assigns Rakshata Chawla to mecha technology, Diethard Ried to intelligence, and Kallen to his personal guard 42.
  • He plans to rescue Kyoshiro Tohdoh from Chofu Base before an execution scheduled in three days, considering Kyushu tensions as a means of distracting Cornelia and Ask 42.
  • C.C. agrees to negotiate with the Chinese Federation and encourages him to approach Kaguya. Ask, meanwhile, agrees to remain at the Clovis Memorial Hall as part of the distraction surrounding the planned rescue 43 47.

Nunnally’s Kidnapping and Mao

  • Mao’s kidnapping of Nunnally interrupts Lelouch’s political plans. Lelouch and Suzaku rescue her, but Mao escapes after learning that Lelouch is Zero 44 46.
  • Lelouch proposes using C.C. to lure Mao out and the Chinese Federation to eliminate him. C.C. refuses, citing the danger of exposing Geass 46.
  • Ask independently sends Origami to kill Mao, removing the threat without Lelouch directing the operation 47.
