Background / History
Recruitment into Ask’s Inner Circle
Jeremiah was already attached to Ask’s faction when Ask entrusted him with the secret capture of a woman associated with Marianne. Although outsiders initially regarded him as an ordinary faction member, a handful of insiders knew how heavily Ask relied on him. Jeremiah accepted the assignment without asking about the target or its purpose, understanding that discovery by another imperial faction could make him a disposable pawn 6.
Ask promised him leadership of the Pureblood Faction if the operation succeeded. The position would place him below only Ask within the Radical Faction, despite the Pureblood Faction being only one part of that organization 7.
Jeremiah’s people captured the woman, subsequently identified as C.C. Her transfer to Ask’s palace was concealed among gift deliveries. Impressed by Jeremiah’s discretion, Ask arranged for Duke Belia to gradually transfer leadership of the Pureblood Faction to him and instructed him to distinguish himself in the coming war against the Island Nation 8 11.
Clovis’s Death and Suzaku’s Rescue
Eight years later, Jeremiah was the Pureblood Faction’s leader and a frontline commander in Area 11. He organized Ask’s reception on his return from the EU, then apologized for failing to protect Clovis, who had been killed while Jeremiah held command. Privately, he suspected imperial-family involvement but proposed using Suzaku Kururugi as a scapegoat to appease the court and public 12.
Ask ordered Jeremiah to announce Suzaku’s public execution as bait for the masked terrorist Zero, with instructions to secretly allow the terrorist to escape. During Suzaku’s rescue, Lelouch’s Geass compelled Jeremiah to let the group go and left him unable to remember his actions. Jeremiah did not yet know that Geass existed 13 17 34.
Ask acknowledged that Jeremiah had been deliberately used as a sacrificial pawn. Jeremiah accepted this without resentment. His punishment reduced his command authority and removed him from command of the Island Nation front, but he retained leadership of the Pureblood Faction 17.
Covert Operations in Area 11
Jeremiah reported that his subordinate Villetta Nu had experienced similar memory loss after encountering a male student. Ask ordered him to keep her under control discreetly; after reviewing her records, Ask ordered her death through Leila. The supplied account establishes the order, not its completion 17 18.
Jeremiah subsequently coordinated contacts and attempted infiltration of the Island Nation’s resistance organizations. His overt trading offers to the Island Nation Liberation Front were rejected, while Honorary Britannian agents planted years earlier remained outside its inner circle. Nevertheless, he successfully leaked news of his contact with the Front, which was the result Ask actually wanted 19 20.
During the Lake Kawaguchi hostage crisis, Jeremiah informed Ask that Euphemia and Milly were among the captives, reported the attackers’ defenses, and received instructions to have Cornelia ready Earl Lloyd’s Knightmare 22.
Partial Restoration of Command
Before the Narita Mountains operation, Ask urged Cornelia to appoint Jeremiah as an additional commander. He argued that Zero’s unusual methods explained Jeremiah’s earlier failure and that Cornelia needed someone able to maintain command while she fought personally. Ask also kept the Military Court from bringing Jeremiah to trial, leaving the incident unresolved 34.
Following Narita, Jeremiah regained some command authority. He continued directing covert personnel, including agents hidden among civilians who monitored Tosai Munakata. They were instructed to confirm Munakata’s contingency plans before quietly eliminating him 40 41 42.
Appearance
Jeremiah is introduced as a handsome young man 6.
- Hair: Dark green 6.
- Bearing: Formal and deferential; he kneels on one knee and gives a knight’s salute when presenting himself to Ask 6.
Personality
Jeremiah’s loyalty belongs to Ask personally. He regards obedience, secrecy, and willingness to sacrifice himself as expressions of duty, accepting even the possibility of being abandoned without resentment. Praise from Ask is his greatest reward, and he repeatedly seeks punishment when he believes he has failed 6 11 12 17.
His concern after Clovis’s death centers on the damage his failure might cause Ask’s faction rather than his own punishment. When demoted, he is relieved that retaining Pureblood leadership means the faction has not suffered a greater loss 12 17.
Jeremiah is courteous but ruthless in political matters. He proposes blaming Suzaku despite not having identified Clovis’s killer, and considers eliminating Suzaku after his recruitment strengthens Schneizel’s faction. At the same time, he restrains his curiosity about Ask’s plans, treating speculation about his sovereign’s intentions as disloyal 12 20.
