Ch. 61Something Went Wrong

Ask secured Suzaku Kururugi’s release after evidence showed he had disobeyed orders during the missile bombardment, then tried to recruit him and pressed Schneizel for support. After unrest spread to Kyushu, Leila interrupted Ask’s time with Milly and Origami to report that something had gone wrong.

  • Schneizel overruled the commanding officer’s case against Suzaku, and the officer released him and destroyed the recording.
  • Ask told Suzaku he believed him and urged him to earn back his honor through distinguished service; Suzaku vowed to repay his trust.
  • Ask asked Schneizel to hand him the Special Dispatch and invited him to visit Ask’s research institute in the EU if he chose to support him.
  • A former aide to Prime Minister Kururugi returned from the Chinese Federation, landed in Kyushu with purchased weapons, and declared the New Island Nation.
  • Leila rushed in while Ask, Milly, and Origami were spending time together and warned Ask that something had gone wrong.

Ch. 62EU "Rebellion"

Ask learned that Elevens had attacked the Geass Research Factory, though the underground facilities were undamaged. Suspecting the Geass Order, he set plans in motion to pursue V.V. while advancing his preparations in Ishikawa.

  • Leila reported that Elevens had attacked the White House, with most rebels detained and the ringleaders surrounded.
  • Ask confirmed that the underground Geass facilities were unharmed and ordered General Bartley to investigate while keeping the suspects detained.
  • Ask ordered Leila to activate the Rhongomyniad, convene a meeting in Ishikawa, and warn Cornelia to raise security.
  • Ask dismissed the possibility that Emperor Charles was behind the attack and suspected V.V. and the Geass Order instead.
  • Ask told Monica to contact C.C. and hurry Lelouch along, planning to leave after the Ishikawa meeting and rely on the Black Knights as a backup.

Ch. 63Back to the EU

After returning to the EU, Ask investigated a rebellion at the southern base and had Jeremiah execute prisoners to silence the crowd. Leila then used Geass on Ask while the guards stood watch.

  • Ask returned to the southern EU base with Jeremiah after leaving the Ishikawa Conference and the Battle of Kyushu behind.
  • General Bartley reported that the rebellion’s ringleaders had gaps in their memories and that the intruders may have included two Geass users.
  • Ask went to see the prisoners, where three ringleaders pleaded for their lives.
  • Jeremiah shot eighteen prisoners in the crowded cage after Ask allowed the executions to continue until the others fell silent.
  • Leila asked the soldiers to withdraw, then used her Geass on Ask as General Bartley watched.

Ch. 64Ask's Geass

Ask used Cognitive Modification to make three Elevens believe they were his loyal dogs, then ordered their deaths. In Area 11, Euphemia announced plans for a Special Zone where the Island Nation’s people would be equal and invited Zero and the Black Knights to join.

  • Ask modified the three ringleaders’ beliefs, confirmed they could not remember who they had met before the rebellion, and ordered them to cut off their hands and kill themselves.
  • Ask told Bartley to dispose of the three, and soldiers shot them before Ask and the others departed.
  • C.C. told Lelouch that Ask and Schneizel had left, leaving Cornelia as their opportunity, while Lelouch reflected on his lost chance to bring Suzaku to his side.
  • Euphemia announced that she intended to establish the Island Nation Special Zone, restore the people’s right to their name, and invite Zero and the Black Knights to join.

Ch. 65The Black Knights' Choice

After Euphemia announced the Island Nation Special Zone, the Black Knights argued over whether to attend its establishment at Ashford, with Lelouch deciding to go while preparing for a possible trap. Kallen remained uneasy about Schneizel’s involvement as the chapter ended with the Black Knights preparing for the event.

  • Area 11 residents reacted with disbelief and hope to Euphemia’s Island Nation Special Zone announcement and planned to register at the Ashford school festival.
  • Diethard and Kyoshiro Tohdoh warned Lelouch that the invitation was a trap, while Kaname Ohgi argued that the Black Knights should consider attending.
  • Lelouch weighed the risk of a trap against the danger of losing the people’s support, and Empress Kaguya advised him to go.
  • Lelouch ordered Diethard to secure the routes, Tohdoh to deploy forces and conceal Knightmares, and Ohgi’s people to infiltrate the school as registrants.
  • Kallen recalled Ask’s explanation that Euphemia had acted on her own and felt uneasy about Schneizel’s role, though she still thought Euphemia might be trusted.

Ch. 66Tragedy

At the Ashford Academy festival, Lelouch arrived as Zero to negotiate with Euphemia over the Island Nation Special Zone. Euphemia abruptly ordered a massacre of the Island Nation people, leaving Kaguya shaken as a familiar, threatening voice called her.

  • The Ashford Academy festival opened as people from the Island Nation arrived, while Kaname Ohgi’s Black Knights infiltrated the crowd to monitor Britannia.
  • Zero arrived in the stolen Gawain, and Euphemia agreed to speak with him alone as Qianzhi remained outside under guard.
  • Kaguya secretly held a transmitter that she had been ordered to activate if Zero accepted the Special Zone plan.
  • After speaking with Lelouch, Euphemia ordered the Island Nation people killed, shot a person in the audience, and then shot Dalton when he tried to stop her.
  • Britannian soldiers and Knightmares began slaughtering the people from the Island Nation, while Kaguya escaped into a safe spot and answered a call from a familiar voice.

Ch. 67Bloodstained Euphemia

Empress Kaguya detonated the explosives in Ashford as Euphemia’s Geass-induced massacre began, while Lelouch turned the disaster into a declaration of war against Britannia. At the EU base, Ask discussed the Geass failure and denied responsibility when Schneizel confronted him.

  • After a call with a mocking royal voice, Empress Kaguya pressed the red button and triggered a series of explosions throughout Ashford.
  • Lelouch arrived too late to stop the soldiers’ massacre and realized his out-of-control Geass meant he could no longer use it on Euphemia.
  • Qianzhi brought the Gawain to Lelouch, who ordered Tōdō to command the front and Ohgi and the others to attack, blaming Britannia for the disaster.
  • At the EU base, Ask told Leila that Lelouch’s Geass had probably gone out of control and considered whether the Geass Ruins had caused it.
  • Schneizel privately asked Ask whether he had caused the events, and Ask denied being able to interfere with the Special XZ Zone.

Ch. 68Layers upon layers

Ask told Leila that Schneizel had misread his strategy and that the Black Knights’ growth was a genuine goal, while Schneizel’s best option was to support Ask. After Kallen asked to kill Euphemia, Ask ordered her spared unless Zero said otherwise, then considered using research into corruption to turn Empress Kaguya into an obedient puppet.

  • Ask told Schneizel he had nothing to do with what happened to Euphemia, and Schneizel said he would visit the Chinese Federation and possibly the EU to investigate Geass Ruins.
  • Ask explained to Leila that he had been preparing to strengthen the Black Knights while also positioning Schneizel to cooperate with him.
  • Kallen called to ask whether she could kill Euphemia, and Ask told her to spare Euphemia unless Zero gave the order.
  • Leila warned Ask that Empress Kaguya might act against him, and Ask proposed having Sphynx research corruption so they could experiment on Kaguya.

Ch. 69Do you know about Geass?

Lelouch shot Euphemia after her Geass-induced massacre, then used the tragedy to declare the United States of Japan and war on Britannia. As Ask considered the consequences, Suzaku called him to ask whether he knew about Geass.

  • Qianzhi asked Lelouch whether she should kill Euphemia, but Lelouch stopped her and shot Euphemia in the abdomen.
  • Suzaku rescued the wounded Euphemia, while Lelouch resolved to make her sacrifice count.
  • Lelouch denounced Britannia at Ashford Academy, declared the United States of Japan, and announced that the Black Knights were at war with Britannia.
  • Ask warned Leila that Lelouch’s declaration would draw in powerful Britannian forces and said Euphemia’s death had affected him deeply.
  • Suzaku called Ask from the Avalon, said Euphemia was alive but badly hurt and that the massacre was not her doing, then asked if Ask knew about Geass.

Ch. 70Prelude to the Decisive Battle for Tokyo

Ask arranged for Suzaku to send Euphemia to the EU for treatment and dispatched Origami to Area 11 to prevent Suzaku from killing Lelouch. As riots spread across Area 11 and the Chinese Federation gathered its fleet, Schneizel volunteered to lead Britannia’s response.

  • Suzaku told Ask that he planned to kill Zero and asked him to save Euphemia, so Ask arranged for her to be sent secretly to the EU for treatment.
  • Ask concluded that V.V. had manipulated Suzaku and ordered Origami to go to Area 11, where she was to stop Suzaku from killing Lelouch.
  • Ask told Leila to have Sphynx calm Nina and inform her that Euphemia would soon arrive for treatment.
  • Britannian officials reported that settlements in Area 11 were rioting and that the Chinese Federation’s fleet was gathering nearby.
  • When Odysseus hesitated to appoint a commander for the response, Schneizel volunteered to go to Area 11.

Ch. 71Tokyo Decisive Battle

During the Black Knights’ assault on the Tokyo Settlement, Lelouch unmasked himself to Cornelia and used Geass to learn that Ask might know the truth about their mother’s murder. When C.C. revealed that Nunnally had been abducted, Lelouch abandoned the battle and rushed to Kamine Island, leaving the Black Knights to lose the settlement and face arrest or flight.

  • Zero collapsed the supports beneath Government Hall, and Qianzhi defeated Cornelia’s Knightmare with the Gawain.
  • Lelouch revealed his identity to Cornelia and used Geass to learn that Marianne had ordered the guards withdrawn and that Ask investigated her murder.
  • C.C. told Lelouch that Nunnally had been abducted and taken toward Kamine Island, so he ordered Qianzhi to take the Gawain there and left Tōdō in command.
  • Empress Kaguya received a warning that Schneizel’s forces were coming, then ordered the Black Knights to retreat and announced that Zero had fled.
  • Britannian reinforcements defeated the Black Knights, arrested their core members, and drove Kaguya and some officers to flee to the Chinese Federation.

Ch. 72A convincing performance

After Suzaku brought the captured Lelouch to Ask, Ask ordered Lelouch imprisoned and learned that Nunnally had been abducted. Ask then told Suzaku he could undo Euphemia’s Geass, using the promise to win Suzaku’s confidence and recruit him for his bid to become emperor.

  • Suzaku delivered Lelouch to Ask in the EU and warned him about Lelouch’s Geass.
  • Lelouch accused Ask of doing nothing to investigate their mother’s death and pleaded with him to rescue the abducted Nunnally, but Ask ordered Leila to lock him up.
  • Ask told Suzaku that Euphemia’s vital signs had stabilized, though she remained unconscious and her Geass had left her unable to face people from the Island Nation.
  • Ask claimed he had a way to undo Geass and promised to restore Euphemia, while demanding that her survival remain secret and that she be publicly declared dead.
  • Ask told Suzaku he intended to become emperor and invited him to help.

Ch. 73Becoming Emperor

Ask recruited Suzaku Kururugi to support his bid for the throne, promising to pursue Euphemia’s Island Nation Special Zone. With Nunnally recovered and V.V. still missing, Ask planned to accelerate Knightmare development, search for V.V., and wait to see how the emperor handled Lelouch.

  • Ask told Suzaku that the emperor was unfit to rule and asked him to support his attempt to become emperor; Suzaku pledged his loyalty.
  • Suzaku visited Euphemia in the hospital, then escorted Lelouch back to Area 11 before dusk.
  • Ask told Monica that Euphemia would help keep Suzaku loyal and that he needed two ninth-generation Knightmares before beginning his plan.
  • Ask reasoned that the emperor might imprison Lelouch or release him as bait to draw out C.C.
  • Monica reported that Nunnally had been found in Ashford and sent back to the homeland, while V.V. and the Geass Order remained missing.
  • Ask ordered the search for V.V. intensified as he prepared to advance his plans.

Ch. 74The Knights of the Round

Suzaku Kururugi joined the Knights of the Round after capturing Zero, and Charles used Suzaku's geass to make Lelouch live as an ordinary person. At his first gathering with the Knights, Suzaku faced hostility from Bratoli before Nonette Enneagram challenged him to a spar.

  • Suzaku Kururugi asked Charles to make him a Knight of the Round, declaring his ambition to become the Knight of One and govern Area 11.
  • Charles ordered Suzaku to use his geass on Lelouch, commanding Lelouch to live as an ordinary person.
  • Lelouch fell unconscious and began receiving treatment, while Suzaku joined the Knights of the Round under surveillance.
  • At the Knights' gathering, Bismarck introduced Suzaku as the Knight of Seven, and Bratoli insulted him for being from Area 11.
  • Nonette Enneagram approached Suzaku and invited him to spar.

Ch. 75Meeting (End of R1)

Suzaku Kururugi was secretly brought to meet Beatrice Aspley, who revealed her connection to Prince Ask and gave him a glimpse of Ask’s influence. Meanwhile, Ask learned Cornelia had disappeared and ordered Duke Kallare to seek the vacant governorship of Area 11.

  • Nonette challenged Suzaku to sparring, but Gino left him alone with her after explaining her history with Cornelia.
  • Nonette led Suzaku through the building to meet Beatrice Aspley, director of the Imperial Secret Service and a former Knight of the Round.
  • Beatrice told Suzaku she had been Prince Ask’s first partner, deepening his impression of Ask’s power.
  • Ask learned that mysterious visitors had searched Lelouch’s former home, while C.C was safely with him in the EU.
  • Leila told Ask that Cornelia had disappeared after learning something during treatment, and Ask ordered Duke Kallare to bid for the governorship of Area 11.

Ch. 76One year later

One year after the Tokyo Decisive Battle, Area 11 was under Governor Kallare’s control as he managed resistance and prepared to receive a Chinese Federation delegation. An Imperial Secret Service operation targeting C.C. began at the Tower of Babel, where Lelouch and Rolo were caught in a terrorist attack and Kallen waited in disguise.

  • Governor Kallare and acting Vice Governor Gilford maintained order in Area 11, while the Education and Correction Zone kept Elevens confined and supplied labor.
  • A white-haired maid sent by Prince Ask arrived in Area 11, irritated Kallare, and urged him to welcome the Chinese Federation’s delegation.
  • Lelouch and Rolo went to the Tower of Babel to win a chess game for a noble, but a terrorist attack separated them.
  • Baron Trish ordered his forces to kill Lelouch and recover his body, using him as bait to draw out C.C.
  • Kallen, dressed as a bunny girl, waited on the Tower’s first basement level to lure Lelouch to a planned location.
  • An approaching person taunted Kallen about her outfit and told her to get on all fours before their lord.

Ch. 77Objective: Find V.V.

Kallen recovered memories of Lelouch using Geass and followed the girl toward Zero, while Governor Kallare set out to confront the Black Knights. In the EU, Ask learned that V.V. was not near the Geass Ruins and considered using Rolo to track him down.

  • The girl used Geass to restore Kallen's memories, and Kallen realized Lelouch had a younger brother and had used Geass on her at Ashford.
  • The girl told Kallen to find Zero, and Kallen said the explosion had sent him to the level below and led the way.
  • Governor Kallare chose to leave the Chinese Federation delegation and personally confront the Black Knights, leaving Gilford to handle the guests.
  • Ask admired the new ninth-generation Knightmare, which his team had built for Monica, and resolved to find V.V. before challenging the emperor.
  • C.C. told Ask that V.V. was not in the EU and suggested he investigate Rolo, while Ask considered approaching the boy in secret.

Ch. 78Zero returns (please put the ice cream in my mouth)

Lelouch used Geass to escape the Britannian troops and rejoined the Black Knights, while Kallen piloted the Guren with Ask’s companion cramped inside. The chapter ended when a yellow Knightmare resembling the Lancelot blocked Kallen’s route out of the Tower of Babel.

  • Baron Trish’s troops cornered Lelouch, who used Geass to make them reveal they served the Imperial Household Agency and then ordered them to die.
  • Lelouch recalled Suzaku’s betrayal, the Emperor’s memory-altering Geass, Nunnally’s disappearance, and his suspicions that Ask knew about Geass.
  • Urabe Qiao Xue arrived in the Guren and Gekka and welcomed Lelouch back as Zero.
  • Lelouch took command from the Tower of Babel’s surveillance room as Kallen fought in the Guren with Ask’s companion squeezed into the cockpit.
  • Kallen brought the Guren to the ground-floor back door and told Ask’s companion to wait for a chance to escape.
  • A yellow Knightmare resembling the Lancelot appeared in front of Kallen.

Ch. 79Emergency

Ask learned that Zero had killed Governor Kallare and arranged for Jeremiah to serve in Area 11. Emperor Charles appointed Nunnally as the new governor, with Jeremiah as her aide and frontline commander.

  • Leila told Ask that Zero had killed Governor Kallare when the Tower of Babel collapsed onto his command vehicle.
  • Ask criticized Kallare for entering the battlefield and decided to send Jeremiah to Area 11, though he expected Charles to appoint the new governor.
  • A soldier summoned Ask to the palace, where Charles questioned him about Kallare's death and whether the resurrected Zero was Lelouch.
  • Ask said they could not confirm Zero's identity, and Charles announced that Nunnally would become governor of Area 11.
  • Ask asked for Jeremiah to assist Nunnally, and Charles agreed to make him her aide and frontline commander.

Ch. 80The Emperor's Probe

Ask passed Charles’s test about Geass by refusing the power, while Charles remained unaware that Ask was concealing parts of his research. Elsewhere, Kallen and Origami escaped a Geass-using Knightmare pilot, and Origami told Kallen to stay loyal to Zero publicly and ignore any moves by Empress Kaguya.

  • Charles asked Ask about his Geass research, then offered him the power of Geass to oppose Lelouch.
  • Ask declined the offer, saying he would not risk using an unknown power before researching it, and Charles accepted his answer.
  • Ask reflected that he had been truthful about lacking test subjects while concealing some details of his work.
  • Kallen escaped in the Guren with Origami after encountering a Knightmare pilot whose Geass could stop living beings’ perception of time.
  • Origami told Kallen not to discuss the encounter, said Ask would arrange matters for the imprisoned Ohgi and Tōdō, and instructed her to remain publicly loyal to Zero despite any moves by Empress Kaguya.
