Background / History
More than four hundred years before his confrontation with Ye Chen, Muzan was nearly killed by Yoriichi Tsugikuni. He escaped and remained hidden until Yoriichi died of old age. Yoriichi’s sword wounds continued burning within his body centuries later, despite his otherwise near-instant regeneration 20 24 34.
That defeat prompted Muzan to gather subordinates and establish the Twelve Kizuki. He tasked them with finding the Blue Spider Lily, which he hoped would eliminate his vulnerability to sunlight. After hundreds of years without a lead, he resolved to create the flower himself 22 34.
Appearance
Muzan appears as a handsome, pale-faced man wearing a purple hat when he receives Ye Chen alongside Kokushibo and Doma 21.
- Female form: A beautiful woman with delicate features, a pale face, lustrous hair, and a curvaceous figure beneath a kimono 18.
- Combat changes: Tentacles emerge through holes in his shirt when he prepares to attack 24.
- Post-battle changes: After Ye Chen injects him with an unknown substance, his face becomes more attractive and his skin softer, smoother, and plumper 34.
Personality
Muzan is cautious and intensely concerned with survival. Ye Chen identifies his tendency to hide from opponents he cannot confidently defeat as both his greatest advantage and a weakness that can be exploited. Muzan’s earlier retreat from Yoriichi becomes the model for Ye Chen’s plan to frighten him into leaving him alone 8 20 25.
He demands obedience and judges subordinates by results rather than circumstances. He threatens unsuccessful Lower Ranks with death and attacks the real Kamunue for suggesting that he use shared vision to distinguish him from an impostor. His response to Kamunue’s death is complete indifference 18 20 22.
Muzan nevertheless recognizes useful talent. He repeatedly offers Ye Chen demonhood because he values the combination of strength, intelligence, and unfamiliar techniques—and expects that becoming a demon would place Ye Chen under his control. His composure breaks when opponents mock his sunlight weakness or recall his defeat by Yoriichi 21 22 24 46.
Abilities & Skills
Physical Strength and Speed
Muzan’s raw combat ability substantially exceeds that of his strongest subordinates 24 26.
- Ye Chen estimates him at A-rank in the system’s combat scale; this is an assessment, not a displayed system statistic 8 26.
- His sudden tentacle strike nearly kills Ye Chen before the latter escapes through the Substitution Technique 24.
- He begins adapting to Ye Chen’s offensive even after Ye Chen stacks strength-enhancing items, Valor Style, and Netherworld Breathing 26.
Regeneration and Longevity
Muzan can normally restore severed body parts almost immediately and survive being cut into multiple pieces 25 26.
- His arm regrows after Ye Chen severs it, though the process is slowed by netherworld flames 26.
- His lifespan allows him to outlive dangerous human opponents rather than confront them 20.
- Regeneration does not erase Yoriichi’s lingering sword wounds 34.
Shared Senses and Remote Communication
Muzan can perceive events through other demons’ senses and communicate with them remotely 18 20.
- Uses shared vision to investigate unexplained demon killings 18.
- Hears Ye Chen’s challenge through Koyuki and orders her to bring him to their meeting 20.
- Ye Chen counters this surveillance with disguises, unpredictable movements, and rapid kills 18.
Body Transformation and Fragmentation
Muzan alters both his outward appearance and his body’s combat structure 18 24 27.
- Assumes a convincing female form 18.
- Produces thin, threadlike tentacles capable of piercing targets 22 24.
- Swallows Ye Chen with a tentacle, but spits him out after being attacked from within 27.
- Splits into more than a thousand fragments that scatter in different directions to escape 27.
- His fragmentation escape has severe aftereffects that aggravate his old wounds 34.
Blood Demon Art: Black Blood Blazing Thorns
Muzan grows blood-filled vines from his hands and lashes them at an opponent 25.
- Uses the technique to test whether Ye Chen’s armor can block his blood 25.
- His blood poses a danger to ordinary humans beyond that of a normal poison, but cannot penetrate the Fake-Pig Set’s protection 26.
Heat Sensing and Combat Analysis
Muzan can locate opponents without relying solely on sight and identify restrictions in unfamiliar techniques 24 26.
- Tracks Ye Chen through heat sensing after a Flash Bomb blinds him 26.
- Correctly deduces that the Substitution Technique requires preparation and cannot be used repeatedly 24.
- Recognizes that avoiding Ye Chen’s blue-white flames reduces the threat to his regeneration 26.
Weaknesses
- Sunlight: Cannot safely face the sun; overcoming this limitation motivates his search for the Blue Spider Lily 21 22.
- Energy-draining flames: Ye Chen’s netherworld fire drains energy from his blood and suppresses regeneration. Muzan explicitly recognizes that his blood reserves are not limitless 26 27.
- Holy armor: The Fake-Pig Set negates his attacks, while its holy light scorches his tentacles like sunlight 25 26.
- Unfamiliar traps: Fails to detect Ye Chen’s electrified Pitfall Traps, allowing repeated attacks while he is briefly immobilized 26.
- Persistent foreign substance: Cannot break down or expel the liquid injected by Ye Chen, although he initially experiences cosmetic changes rather than discomfort 34.
Relationships
- Ye Chen — Enemy and former recruitment target. Ye Chen forces him to retreat through temporary equipment, energy-draining attacks, and traps rather than superior unaided strength 21 24 25 27.
- Yoriichi Tsugikuni — The swordsman who nearly killed him centuries earlier. The wounds and humiliation from that encounter remain with Muzan 24 34.
- Kokushibo — Upper Rank One and his strongest subordinate. Their relationship is not strictly that of superior and subordinate; Kokushibo knows about Muzan’s historical defeat and dares to mention it openly 18 46.
- Doma — Upper Rank Two; assists Muzan against Ye Chen. Muzan considers him powerful but lacking a clear sense of purpose 21 24 25.
- Koyuki — Lower Rank Four; receives Muzan’s remote orders and escorts Ye Chen to him after failing to defeat the hunter 19 20.
- Byōga and Kamunue — Lower Ranks dispatched against Ye Chen. Both are killed during the ensuing confrontation, with Muzan showing no concern for Kamunue’s death 18 22 23.
- Gyutaro and Daki — Shared Upper Rank Six. Their deaths at Ye Chen’s hands break a century-long period without an Upper Rank casualty 45 46.
- Tamayo — A demon who opposes and deeply hates him. She receives his blood from Ye Chen for research aimed at combating him 28 31 48.
- Kagaya Ubuyashiki — Leader of the Demon Slayer Corps, whose ultimate goal is Muzan’s death. Kagaya calls Muzan a disgrace to their family 31.
Story Role / Major Arcs
| Event | Muzan’s role and outcome |
|---|---|
| Early encounter | Notices something unusual about Ye Chen but walks away. Ye Chen recognizes him and avoids a confrontation because of their strength gap 8. |
| Investigation of demon killings | Fails to identify the disguised hunter through shared vision. Sends Lower Ranks Three, Four, and Six after him with a half-month deadline 18. |
| Meeting and attempted recruitment | Receives Ye Chen with Kokushibo and Doma present. Offers him a place among the Twelve Kizuki, but Ye Chen answers with an invitation to meet in sunlight 20 21. |
| Battle with Ye Chen | Loses two Lower Ranks, fails to harm Ye Chen through the Fake-Pig Set, and suffers repeated dismemberment. Ye Chen collects his blood and injects him with an unknown liquid 22 23 25 26. |
| Retreat | Large Barrel Bombs worsen his injuries. Unable to overcome Ye Chen’s defenses and unfamiliar tools, he escapes by scattering into over a thousand fragments 27. |
| Research consequences | Ye Chen delivers Muzan’s blood to Tamayo. Her research gives Kagaya renewed hope that Muzan can be killed 28 31. |
| Recovery and changed strategy | His escape aggravates Yoriichi’s old wounds. Unable to remove the injected substance and dissatisfied with his subordinates, he decides to create the Blue Spider Lily himself 34. |
| Upper Rank meeting | After Gyutaro and Daki die, warns the remaining Upper Ranks that Ye Chen has grown stronger. Orders them to search for or create the Blue Spider Lily and avoid provoking Ye Chen until he handles the threat himself 46. |
Notable Quotes
“Useless trash. If he dies, he dies.” 22
“No, absolutely not! I have to take action. Why did I create all this trash? To find the Blue Spider Lily! It’s been hundreds of years, and there’s still not a single lead. In that case, I’ll create the Blue Spider Lily myself!” 34
Trivia
- Killing Muzan is the protagonist’s only initially listed A-difficulty mission, rewarding 4,000 exchange points and the Demon King Hunter title 3.
- After the battle, Ye Chen concludes that his incomplete Slip-Slip Fruit has taken effect on Muzan. Muzan later notices improved looks and smoother skin, but no additional effects are documented in the provided chapters 27 34.
