Background / History

Urokodaki previously served as the Demon Slayer Corps’ Water Hashira, spending much of his active career on missions. After retiring, he adopted a simple lifestyle in a small wooden cabin and continued training students 14 29.

Years earlier, he captured the Hand Demon and brought it to the mountain used for Final Selection. The demon developed a grudge against him and targeted his students, recognizing them by the masks Urokodaki gave them 29 32.

Urokodaki reports that twelve of the thirteen students he sent to Final Selection died there, with Giyu Tomioka the only survivor. These losses became a recurring nightmare and made him reluctant to accept more disciples. Although he suspected a demon was deliberately targeting his students, he did not learn the culprit’s identity until Makomo and Ye Chen returned from their selection 12 16 37.

Appearance

• Elderly man: Ye Chen treats him as an older veteran; no precise age is established 15 16.

Personality

Urokodaki is cautious about sending people into the Demon Slayer Corps. He initially refuses to teach Ye Chen, who wants advice without becoming his disciple, and later insists that excellent cooking alone cannot qualify someone for such dangerous work. His concern for Makomo leads him to test Ye Chen’s strength before privately asking for his help 12 14 16.

He also has a competitive, teasing side. Ye Chen’s confidence in his cooking provokes him into demanding restaurant-quality food, and their meal becomes a high-speed contest over roast meat. During their subsequent spar, he refuses to attack a teenager first and laughs about both combatants holding back 13 14 15 16.

Despite his guarded manner, he is deeply attached to his students. He cries at Makomo’s safe return and solemnly thanks Ye Chen. He also respects personal boundaries: when Ye Chen evades a question about Mystic Water, Urokodaki stops asking because everyone has secrets 37.

Urokodaki is an experienced Water Breathing practitioner and former Water Hashira 12 16.

Swordsmanship and Agility

His sparring demonstrates fast attacks, precise blade control, and recovery from powerful blows 15.

• Uses blocks, angled deflections, thrusts, evasive movements, and an aerial upward slash 15.
• Spins in midair to dissipate much of the force after Ye Chen sends him flying with a kick 15.

• Ye Chen / Yatsuka Nightstar — A guest and recipient of his guidance, not a formal disciple. Urokodaki recommends him for Final Selection, supplies equipment, and entrusts him with Makomo’s safety 12 14 16 29 33.
• Hand Demon — A demon he captured years earlier. It retaliates by murdering his students; Ye Chen helps Makomo kill it 32 33.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Ye Chen’s Visit and Assessment

Ye Chen seeks a Final Selection recommendation and a week of combat advice. Urokodaki initially refuses, but permits him to cook. After testing him through their contest over food, he agrees to the recommendation 12 13 14.

A wooden-sword spar ends in a draw when both blades break. Urokodaki then reveals his students’ deaths and asks Ye Chen to intervene only if Makomo is in danger, preserving the selection’s purpose as a trial 15 16.

Final Selection and the Hand Demon

When Ye Chen remains away for over a month, Urokodaki worries that he will not return to protect Makomo. Upon his return, Urokodaki permits him to prepare in the storehouse and gives him a mask and Nichirin Blade 29.

Ye Chen rescues Makomo from the Hand Demon and weakens it with wisteria poison, allowing her to deliver the finishing blow. Their return both fulfills Urokodaki’s request and reveals why his earlier students were targeted 33 37.

Preparation for Corps Service

Urokodaki welcomes the survivors home, explains when their new Nichirin Blades should arrive, and encourages Makomo to accept the Mystic Water necklace after sensing its effect on Water Breathing 37.

The completed blades arrive fifteen days later. Urokodaki declines to intervene in Ye Chen’s argument with the swordsmith, recognizing that both have difficult tempers 38.
