History
Meeting Zero
Kale and the newly arrived Tarnished escape a pursuing Tree Sentinel by taking refuge among trees, where the knight’s large horse and halberd cannot maneuver easily. After introducing himself, Kale searches his packs for a weapon to help the penniless Tarnished but finds none. He warns him that Godrick’s soldiers are hunting Tarnished for an evil ritual, then flees on his mount when a soldier appears—calling out the location of his shop as he leaves 6.
At the Church of Elleh, Kale exchanges throwing knives for a Golden Rune and prepares rabbits the Tarnished catches. Troubled by his apparent lack of ambition, Kale warns him not to wait until he needs strength to discover that he has none. Before the Tarnished leaves for Stormfoot Catacombs, Kale lends him a Large Leather Shield 7.
The Catacombs Return
While waiting at the church, Kale fears that the Tarnished has died. He has heard that treasure seekers entering Stormfoot Catacombs never return, though he has not explored them himself. When the Tarnished comes back with the shield punctured by imps, Kale charges him its full price of six hundred runes 10.
Kale then teaches him how to manifest and count his runes, collects payment, and sells him a Crafting Kit and Chainmail Hood. The hood makes the nearly naked Tarnished look ridiculous; Kale laughs, refuses an exchange, and escapes onto his horse 10.
Coastal Cave Expedition
Zero later returns with Boc and purchases Cracked Pots and meat for an expedition. Kale agrees to accompany them for one day, noting that no other Tarnished have recently come to trade with him. At Groveside Cave, his mount carries the game used to feed the White Wolf King’s pack, and Kale witnesses Zero’s unusual friendship with the wolves 25 26.
On the way to Coastal Cave, Kale gives Zero instructions for contacting Blaidd in Mistwood. At the cave’s rallying statue, he demonstrates a Furlcalling Finger Remedy, whose guidance leads the party to Knight Ishutobon and Kale’s old acquaintance Huf under attack by Demi-Humans. Kale subsequently joins the assault inside the cave 27 28.
After victory, Kale receives only 136 runes from Zero under their agreement to split Zero’s earnings. He personally checks Zero’s remaining balance and learns that Boc received the chief’s runes for landing the final blow. Despite his complaints, Kale also comforts Boc after hearing about his mother’s keepsakes. Once the coast becomes a settled refuge, Kale visits frequently, sometimes bringing Huf 29 30.
Appearance
Kale is an elderly merchant dressed in red, with a parched voice 6 33.
- Travels with a small mount repeatedly described as a “little mule” 6 26.
- Carries merchandise in packs and leather bags 6 25.
- Plays an instrument resembling an erhu beside the campfire 7.
Personality
Kale combines practical kindness with an uncompromising approach to business. He helps a penniless stranger, offers survival advice, and lends valuable equipment, but insists on payment when that equipment returns damaged. His warmth becomes especially conspicuous when Zero offers money, and he firmly maintains that all sales are final 6 7 10 25.
He is cautious rather than eager for danger. He immediately escapes Godrick’s soldier and is alarmed when Zero brings him into a wolf-filled cave. Nevertheless, he follows through on the expedition and helps defeat the Demi-Humans 6 26 28 29.
His teasing manner conceals a more sympathetic side. He worries when Zero fails to return, recognizes the danger of remaining powerless, and responds gently to Boc’s account of hardship. His sorrowful music contrasts with his usual haggling and banter 7 10 29.
