Background / History
His Mother's Legacy
Boc lived with his mother in Coastal Cave. A seamstress, she taught him everything she knew so that he could support himself despite being, in his own words, “less capable than everyone else.” After her death, her Sewing Needle and Sewing Kit became treasured keepsakes that reminded him of her presence 24 29.
The other demi-humans disliked Boc and drove him from the cave. He believed his inability to catch prey during hunts was why they hated him. Fleeing the dangers outside, he eventually hid in some bushes and fell asleep; when he woke, he could no longer move 15.
Trapped as a Tree
Zero found Boc calling for help in a grove near Agheel Lake. Boc had become a small tree, but initially did not understand what had happened. He remembered dreaming of his mother singing a lullaby and reciting a spell to keep him safe, though he could not recall the spell itself 14 15.
Unlike the encounter Zero remembered from the game, rolling into Boc did not restore his original form. Cutting small branches and burning a leaf only caused him pain. Zero left to fetch water and later sought Sellen's advice about the transformation 15 21 24.
Sellen suggested that Boc might remain transformed because he did not truly want to change back. Returning to the grove, Zero identified Boc's fear of confronting the Coastal Cave chiefs as the obstacle: he wanted his mother's stolen belongings, but was terrified of pursuing them. When Boc finally admitted that he could not bear to abandon the keepsakes, he returned to his demi-human form 24.
Recovering the Sewing Tools
Boc helped Zero prepare for the cave expedition by distracting Godrick's soldiers at Gatefront Ruins, allowing Zero to retrieve the Whetstone Knife and Storm Stomp Ash of War. The following morning, he also lured a soldier into Zero's ambush. The group then recruited Kale and the White Wolf King's pack before heading to Coastal Cave 25 26 27.
Inside the cave, Boc approached his former chief and demanded his mother's belongings. The chief attacked, and the party was surrounded by a second chief and other demi-humans. During the battle, Boc intervened when one chief tried to strike Zero from behind, leaping onto its head and delivering the killing blow with his dagger 28.
After the victory, Boc recovered the Sewing Needle and Sewing Kit. He offered to handle his rescuers' clothing and other sewing work, declaring his intention to become as skilled a tailor as his mother 29.
Life in Coastal Cave
When the defeated demi-humans struggled to survive outside the cave, Boc called them back out of compassion. With Zero's permission, they stayed and helped maintain the settlement, while Boc communicated with them and the White Wolf King managed the wolves 30.
Boc remained in Coastal Cave when Zero resumed his journey. At their farewell, he promised to become more useful and improve his sewing before Zero's next visit. Zero considered the settled life safer for him than accompanying a Tarnished into further danger 31.
Appearance
- Original form: Extremely scrawny, with a doglike appearance 24.
- Transformed form: An unassuming little tree or bush, able to speak and shake its branches but unable to leave its rooted position 15 24.
- After the successful Gatefront diversion, Zero notices that Boc's complexion looks healthier than before 25.
Personality
Boc is timid, self-deprecating, and quick to apologize. He calls himself useless, assumes that others ignore him because he is an ugly demi-human, and initially insists that recovering his belongings is not worth risking Zero's life. His first encounter with Zero's painful attempts to break the spell leaves him frightened when the Tarnished returns 15 24.
His fear does not prevent him from becoming courageous when it matters: he confronts his former chief and later protects Zero during the fight. He is also deeply grateful and compassionate, offering his sewing skills to his rescuers and welcoming back the demi-humans who had driven him away. He asks Kale to teach him bookkeeping so that he can help the community further 28 29 30.
