Background / History

Shenhe was born into a family of exorcists. When her mother became gravely ill, her father exhausted conventional treatments and turned to ancient texts. He seized a book from his neighbor Mingjun that described summoning a god and sacrificing a life. Although he initially offered his own life, the summoned entity identified Shenhe as a child of the Lone Star of Calamity and persuaded him to sacrifice her instead 21.

Her father left her in a cave filled with God Remains. Shenhe waited for him to return, surviving days of combat with a small blade and her newly awakened Vision. Cloud Retainer discovered and rescued her, but Shenhe remained suspicious enough to point her weapon at her rescuer before finally collapsing 21.

Cloud Retainer and Moon Carver examined her fate and found that she was destined to bring death to her kin. Cloud Retainer gave her Red Ropes to restrain that fate and her dangerous impulses. Shenhe subsequently lived and trained among the adepti, largely isolated from ordinary people 21.

During a later secret visit to her childhood village, Shenhe found it abandoned and learned that her father had died. Believing her remaining ties to her family had been severed, she withdrew further from human life until meeting Xiu Yuan 36.

Appearance

  • Hair: Long and silvery-white 26.
  • Red Ropes: Worn on her body to restrain her nature and baleful energy; removed after the fate exchange 21 27 30.
  • Bearing: Initially cold and unapproachable, but visibly expressive, shy, and quick to blush once she trusted Xiu Yuan 23 24.

Personality

Shenhe’s apparent indifference is partly a consequence of the Red Ropes and partly a deliberate defense. She keeps others at a distance because she fears bringing them misfortune, even blaming herself for her mother’s illness. Years away from society also leave her blunt and unfamiliar with negotiation, humor, and everyday customs 21 22 24.

Despite denying any ambition to save the world, she acts decisively to protect people in danger. She later admits that seeing travelers surrounded by monsters reminded her of her own childhood helplessness: she wanted to save them as Cloud Retainer had once saved her 23 24.

Once she feels accepted, Shenhe becomes affectionate and eager to learn. She listens to Xiu Yuan’s explanations of social rules, grows more talkative, and persists in learning to cook despite repeated failures. Her attachment to him is accompanied by a deep fear of abandonment, which resurfaces severely when he leaves 25 26 27 29.

  • Xiu Yuan later recalled that she frequently suffered nightmares, especially without the ropes 41.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Traveling with Xiu Yuan

Shenhe meets Xiu Yuan while intervening against Hilichurls in a forest. After he protects her from a larger monster, she accepts his invitation to travel, provided they avoid crowded places. Their journey gradually moves from guarded companionship to trust: she smiles at his cooking mishap, shares morning dew, and eventually tells him about her abandonment 21 22 23 24.

Xiu Yuan rejects her belief that she deserves loneliness and promises that she can rely on him. After crying herself to sleep in his arms, she greets him the next morning as her husband and kisses his cheek. He subsequently asks her to slow down and learn more about him before considering marriage 24 25.

Learning Life in Mondstadt

Xiu Yuan brings Shenhe to Mondstadt to experience ordinary human life. His tomato and egg noodles restore a cherished childhood memory, while an encounter with a dishonest restaurant customer exposes the gap between her instinct to eliminate evildoers and society’s need to investigate wrongdoing 25 26.

Over several weeks, Shenhe becomes more sociable, befriends Jean, and attempts to cook for Xiu Yuan. Sharing his bed gives her the best sleep she has experienced in years 27.

The side story revisits this period through a quieter evening at the inn. Shenhe enjoys candied hawthorns and imagines marrying Xiu Yuan and raising a son with him, unaware that he expects to leave her 36.

Separation and Fate Exchange

When Shenhe tries to turn their relationship into a marriage, Xiu Yuan abruptly tells her that he does not love her and vanishes. His rejection is a deliberate plan: having told Jean that he is terminally ill, he hopes Shenhe will move on rather than become more isolated after his death 27 28.

The separation instead triggers a severe crisis. Shenhe believes she is trapped in a nightmare, injures her hands trying to wake herself, and reaches for a knife before Jean intervenes 29.

Meanwhile, Xiu Yuan seeks a way to remove her fate permanently. With Venti’s guidance and Moon Carver’s help, he exchanges his fate of happiness for her lone calamity. Shenhe’s baleful energy disappears, prompting her to return to Liyue with Jean 29 30.

After learning what happened, Shenhe begs Moon Carver to reverse the exchange, but he explains that a fate can only be exchanged once. Xiu Yuan’s final message confirms his love and asks her to live well. She mourns him and vows to wait for his return 30.
