Background / History

Archon War and Inazuma’s Founding

Zebu fought in the Archon War alongside Baal and their companions. When Baal worried that accepting a seat among the Seven would slight those who had done most of the fighting, Zebu insisted that their victory, glory, and responsibility belonged to both sisters. She agreed to protect Inazuma while Baal traveled to Celestia 100.

After Baal returned with the Gnosis, Zebu proposed a Founding Celebration. Together with Baal, Kitsune Saiguu, and Chiyo, she helped establish the Tenryou, Kanjou, and Yashiro Commissions. Kitsune Saiguu assumed responsibility for the Yashiro Commission, and the group sought Xiu Yuan’s advice about the remaining appointments 109.

Learning to Cook

After repeatedly exploiting Kitsune Saiguu’s scruff weakness, Zebu sought to apologize with homemade Aburaage. Her previous cooking had left Sasayuri ill for nearly a week, and her first lesson with Chiyo began with crushed ginger and a countertop broken in two 103 104.

Zebu spent the entire day learning the dish. Excessive salt and water ruined earlier attempts, but her tenth attempt produced edible Aburaage. Kitsune Saiguu enjoyed the apology gift, and Zebu later improved the recipe enough to earn Xiu Yuan’s genuine praise 105 106 134.

Orobashi and Xiu Yuan’s Promise

The Founding Celebration was interrupted by news that Orobashi was attacking Yashiori Island. Zebu rushed there as lightning and discovered that Xiu Yuan had survived the battle but lost his left hand. At his bedside, she angrily rejected his decision to face the danger alone, insisting that his life mattered more than the celebration 111 112 113.

Xiu Yuan promised to seek her help if another danger arose. Following his recovery, the celebration resumed, and he became head of the Tenryou Commission. Zebu subsequently permitted him to visit Watatsumi Island to protect its people and address their resentment following the Great Serpent’s death 113.

Sharing the Burden of Protection

After the pirate attack on Watatsumi Island, Zebu waited outside Xiu Yuan’s house with the surviving villagers for two days. She tried to reassure him that he had saved most of the population, but he remained consumed by guilt over twelve deaths. When he asked to withdraw somewhere secluded, she tearfully begged him to return to Narukami Island before ultimately accepting his promise to come back 129 130 131.

Seeing Inazuma prosper under his relentless protection changed Zebu’s understanding of his work. She found him on his tiny deserted island and proposed alternating patrol days so that neither would shoulder everything alone. Invoking his earlier promise to make amends, she persuaded him to return home for several days of rest 132 133.

The Khaenri’ah Crisis

When violent seas, distant explosions, and a Protective Barrier surrounded Inazuma, Zebu suspected that Xiu Yuan had secretly left to fight another nation’s god. She entrusted tsunami preparations to Baal and attempted to break through the barrier to reach him. Even her full-power Musou no Hitotachi failed to leave a crack 142 143.

As Abyss-like monsters filled the ocean and began cracking the barrier from outside, Zebu abandoned her fear and prepared to defend Narukami Island to the death. Xiu Yuan returned gravely wounded and drew the monsters away, but kept her and the others trapped behind the barrier. Zebu repeatedly struck it, accusing him of breaking his promise and pleading to fight beside him 144 145 146.

After Xiu Yuan annihilated the monsters, the barrier shattered and he fell into the sea. Zebu retrieved him and brought him aboard a ship, where he revealed his solitary participation in the war and died in Baal’s arms 148.

Erosion in Xiu Yuan’s Earlier Experience

The Zebu remembered from Xiu Yuan’s life as Kazuha was markedly different from her lively eighth-life self. After losing friends and loved ones, she suffered erosion and withdrew into the Plane of Euthymia for five hundred years, using solitude to resist it. Xiu Yuan remembered her eyes as numb and her demeanor as almost mechanical 138 152.

His account associates that isolation with a puppet governing Inazuma in pursuit of Eternity, the Vision Hunt Decree, and closed borders. Protecting Zebu’s warmth and preventing that future became part of his motivation for intervening in the Khaenri’ah crisis 135 138.

Festivals and Finale Events

Zebu continued the annual Sakura Festival picnic with Baal, Chiyo, Kitsune Saiguu, and Yae Miko beneath Sasayuri’s statue. They prepared food and tea for Xiu Yuan and played Karuta. In Finale 2, Zebu also reacted angrily to a festivalgoer belittling Sasayuri’s sacrifice and exchanged punishment ideas with Miko 281 321 322.

Personality

Zebu is playful, competitive, and often outrageous around her companions. She delights in teasing Kitsune Saiguu and Chiyo, devises unusual ways to torment her friends, and once proposed disguising herself as an ordinary girl and sleeping in the street to see what would happen. Chiyo and Kitsune Saiguu stopped that plan 103 134 135.

Her confidence in combat contrasts sharply with her insecurity in domestic tasks. Cooking initially seemed almost impossible to her, and she feared Baal’s scolding after damaging the kitchen. Nevertheless, she offered to take sole responsibility for the broken table and persisted until she made edible food 104 105.

Zebu is fiercely protective but can act impulsively when frightened for someone she loves. Her attempts to reach Xiu Yuan generated destructive winds across Narukami Island, yet her concern for the civilians later overcame her terror of the surrounding monsters 143 144.

Her wartime experience initially led her to regard sacrifice and painful trials as unavoidable. Xiu Yuan challenged that outlook, arguing that growth need not require death. Although she could not always understand his self-blame, she responded by trying to share his work rather than merely asking him to stop 130 133.

Lightning Manipulation and Travel

Zebu produces powerful violet lightning and can transform into lightning for rapid movement 112 133 142.
