Background / History

Family and upbringing

Meng Yiran’s parents died early, leaving her grandparents, Dragon Duke Meng Shu and Snake Granny Chao Tianxiang, to raise her. Although they possess standing in the Soul Master world, they also have numerous enemies. Chao Tianxiang hopes Yiran will find a strong, caring partner who can protect her after their deaths, while assuring her that she can always return to the family 33.

Her family owns several shops in Heaven Dou City. After half a year away, she eagerly welcomes the opportunity to see her grandparents again 40.

Meeting Chen Xuanqing

Yiran first watches Chen Xuanqing confront the Shrek Academy group in the Star Dou Great Forest. Initially attracted by his appearance, she becomes more captivated after Meng Shu identifies him as the sixteen-year-old Level 74 Soul Saint famous for defeating a Level 85 Soul Douluo. When her grandparents discuss intervening, she anxiously asks whether they intend to attack him; Meng Shu reassures her that they would help him if necessary 26 28.

After the battle, she formally introduces herself and receives permission to call him “Brother Xuanqing.” He also lets her absorb the Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent’s soul ring 30.

Beast tide and joining the group

Tang San’s drugs attract a beast tide while Yiran is occupied with her soul-ring absorption. Her grandparents, Chen Xuanqing, Xiao Wu, and Zhu Zhuqing defend her until the danger passes. After completing the absorption and learning what happened, she thanks Chen Xuanqing with a kiss on the cheek 30 31 32.

Angered by Tang San’s actions, she adds several kicks after Chen Xuanqing knocks him unconscious. Her grandparents subsequently leave her in Chen Xuanqing’s care, and she declares that she will take control of her own destiny 33.

Life at the Lake of Life

Yiran accompanies the group on Er Ming’s palm to the Lake of Life. She helps Xiao Wu collect branches and leaves for their wooden house and joins the housewarming meal 34 35.

Chen Xuanqing gives her a Purple Dragon Core, which mutates her martial soul and dramatically increases her cultivation. She then joins Xiao Wu and Zhu Zhuqing in seeking greater strength, uses the Azure Gleam Sword to purify her soul power, and spends six months training with the group 36 37 38 39.

Journey toward Heaven Dou City

After leaving the lake, Yiran encounters Qian Renxue with the others. She admires Qian Renxue’s beauty and strength, learns that she is impersonating Crown Prince Xue Qinghe, and agrees to maintain the disguise before outsiders 41 42 43 44.

Near Heaven Dou City, Chen Xuanqing gives her a bottle of Longevity-Extending Pills for her grandparents. She leaves to visit them, promising to return to him as soon as possible 47.

Yiran is initially bashful about her attraction to Chen Xuanqing, worrying that winning the famous prodigy’s affection may be wishful thinking. Nevertheless, she takes the initiative to approach him, ask for a familiar form of address, and express her gratitude. She remains sensitive to romantic competition: learning about Hu Liena makes her visibly uneasy and jealous 28 30 32 43.

She values both her family and her companions. Rather than escalating Xiao Wu and Zhu Zhuqing’s jealousy, she promises to get along with them and emphasizes that friends should care for one another. She initially hesitates to accept the precious Purple Dragon Core because of its value 34 36.

Her playful curiosity coexists with a determination to become stronger. She follows Xiao Wu toward an unfamiliar battle without hesitation and teases Chen Xuanqing during their travels. After her mutation, she resolves to cultivate harder and agrees that the women should become capable of fighting alongside their companions 38 40 41 46.
