Background / History

Childhood and Rescue

Qing Lin lived with her mother during her early childhood. After her mother died, she wandered alone until slave traders captured her. Her mixed ancestry exposed her to intense discrimination, compounded by the Snake-People Tribe’s feared reputation in the Tagor Desert 21.

Sun Buxiao found her caged in a Stone Desert City slave shop and paid three thousand gold coins to take her away. He kept her beside him rather than leaving her without protection. When she asked whether he hated or feared her, he reassured her, told her not to conceal her scales, and promised to teach her cultivation. He also forbade her from kneeling or addressing him as “master” 19 21.

Early Training and Wutan City

Before searching the Tagor Desert, Sun Buxiao entrusted Qing Lin to Xiao Ding, requesting a wood-attribute cultivation method and protection from discrimination. She later accompanied him through the Magical Beast Mountain Range and into the Black-Corner Region, where Xiao Yi Xian joined their group. In Earthnight City, Sun Buxiao obtained pills and other resources to support Qing Lin’s cultivation 24 26 31 36.

After her Dou Zhe breakthrough, Sun Buxiao arranged for her to stay at the Mittel Auction House in Wutan City while he pursued his Black-Corner Region plans. Qing Lin understood that her weakness made accompanying him dangerous and resolved to grow strong enough not to hold him back 37 46 49.

Under Gu Ni’s supervision, she awakened her pupils and began collecting snake-type magical beasts in the nearby mountains. She reunited with Sun Buxiao after sensing the battle involving Yun Yun and the Amethyst Winged Lion King, then acquired a lion cub as a pet and mount 62 68 87 89.

Tagor Desert Expedition

With her magical beasts providing protection, Qing Lin resumed traveling with Sun Buxiao. During their search for the Green Lotus Core Flame, her perception helped locate an underground passage, and she subdued its Two-Headed Fire Spirit Snake guardian. They withdrew when Medusa and additional Snake-People experts approached 90 99 100 101.

Little Shuang subsequently reported that five powerful individuals had removed the flame. Qing Lin also experienced sensations resembling Medusa’s burns, leading Sun Buxiao to suspect that her pupils could affect Snake-People 103 104.

Jia Nan Academy

Sun Buxiao left Qing Lin at Jia Nan Academy for safer, more systematic instruction in wood-attribute cultivation and Dou Techniques. Su Qian placed her under Instructor Ruo Lin, whose introduction to Qing Lin’s powerful pets left her alarmed 140 142.

Qing Lin defeated Yang Kai in the Outer Academy tournament without using her pets. During the selection melee, she allied with Xiao Yan and Xiao Xun’er, using soul power to briefly daze their opponents. She placed third overall and subsequently advanced to Da Dou Shi 148 150 151 152.

In the Inner Academy, her fifth-rank lion attracted students seeking membership in Pan Gate. Qing Lin was more interested in identifying the frightening presence she had sensed on arrival. She eventually befriended Zi Yan, despite initially fearing her aura, and also joined Xiao Yan’s companions during Han Feng’s attack on the academy 142 158 159 178.

Heavenly Snake Mansion

Elder Bai recognized Qing Lin’s pupils during a visit to Sun Buxiao and agreed to consult the Heavenly Snake Mansion’s leaders. Sun Buxiao explained that the mansion could develop abilities he could not adequately teach, while assuring her that he would not force her to leave 181.

Qing Lin eventually chose to go because she wanted to become strong enough to help him. Sun Buxiao secured Su Qian’s agreement, received the mansion’s envoys Lu Man and Bai Ya, and warned against anyone bullying her. She embraced him before departing on Little Purple’s back 194 195 196.

Later, Qing Lin took first place among the sects’ younger generation. Her letter nevertheless focused on concern for Sun Buxiao and asked whether the Heavenly Poison Gate’s absence meant something had happened to him 241.

Appearance

• Hair: Soft jade-green hair, initially dirty and disheveled when she was found in captivity 19 21 26.
• Eyes: Clear jade-green eyes; after awakening, three rotating flowers appear within her pupils 21 62.
• Scales: Patches of snake scales across her body, including her wrists 20 49.

Personality

Qing Lin initially speaks mechanically, keeps her head lowered, and trembles at unfamiliar attention. Years of hostile gazes make her wary even of kindness. With Sun Buxiao’s reassurance and care, she regains a child’s liveliness, although scrutiny from powerful strangers can still send her retreating behind him 21 26 92 196.

Her devotion to Sun Buxiao is rooted in his being the first person to treat her with respect. She initially believes that whatever he does must be right, but her loyalty also motivates independent effort: she accepts separation and specialized training because she wants to contribute rather than remain dependent on his protection 33 49 194 196.

Usually quiet and reserved, Qing Lin can become cutting and confrontational. At the academy, she repeats an insult taught by Sun Buxiao and angrily rejects students’ claims that defeating Xiao Yan would entitle them to Xiao Xun’er’s affection 148 151.

Her attachment to Sun Buxiao develops into romantic feelings. His relationship with Xiao Yi Xian leaves her distressed, despite her genuine affection for Xiao Yi Xian; Sun Buxiao does not recognize these feelings 178 181 184.
