Background / History

In his previous life, Sun Buxiao stayed overnight at an internet café, then fell into a cauldron of congee at a breakfast shop. He awakened on the Dou Qi Continent as a baby born with a soul-bound Porridge Bowl 1 2.

He grew up in the Chu Yun Empire with an absent father and a mother who practiced poison refinement. His mother accidentally killed herself through that practice when he was ten. After burying her, he began traveling with his bowl, teaching himself cultivation and scavenging equipment and Dou Techniques from corpses in the wilderness 1 10.

His reputation in Chu Yun was considerably darker than his conduct toward later companions. Xiao Yi Xian had heard that he slaughtered the small sect responsible for encouraging his mother to become a poison master, defeated a Da Dou Shi while still a Dou Shi, and retaliated against even minor offenses. These accounts initially made her afraid to approach him 27.

Retaining imperfect knowledge of Battle Through the Heavens, he traveled to Wutan City intending to befriend Xiao Yan after the latter’s fall from genius. Finding Xiao Yan still a One-Star Dou Zhe, he realized he had arrived three years too early and prioritized his own breakthrough instead 1.

Appearance

Sun Buxiao initially appears as a lean young man with black hair and a worn but clean white robe. His clothing gives him a refined air despite his frequently coarse behavior 1 27.

• Porridge Bowl: Almost constantly carried in one hand; part of the recognizable description Xiao Yi Xian associates with his Chu Yun reputation 27.
• White hair: His hair has become entirely white after his confrontation with Han Feng 78.
• Scorpion tail: A later bodily feature capable of piercing opponents and fighting separately while he restrains another enemy 160.
• Large wings: His Wind-Radiance Heaven-Splitting Wings are conspicuous enough for Mu Gu to recognize them as an Earth Tier Flying Dou Technique 222 224.
• Hall of Souls attire: Receives an Elder’s robe and tokens after joining the organization; subsequently appears wearing a black hood 243 244.

Personality

Sun Buxiao is irreverent, vulgar, and deliberately provocative. He invents scandalous “unofficial histories,” spreads them through intermediaries, and uses his targets’ reactions to generate negative energy for cultivation. Han Feng becomes a particularly persistent target of this combination of mockery and calculated antagonism 4 35 76.

His confidence is tempered by an awareness of power disparities. As a young cultivator, he recognizes that talent offers little protection against someone capable of killing him. He postpones entering the Black-Corner Region until reaching Dou Ling and adopts a deferential manner before Hun Miesheng rather than pretending he can challenge a Dou Sheng 1 15 243.

Despite considering himself cold-blooded, he insists on retaining basic empathy. The sight of Qing Lin imprisoned for sale enrages him even before her identity matters to him. He becomes deeply protective of her and Xiao Yi Xian, while remaining ruthless toward enemies and subordinates who betray him 19 119 196.

He is also an experimental risk-taker. His willingness to force an incomplete Poison Pill procedure nearly destroys his body, and even his punishing fight with Mu Gu excites him as an opportunity to transform further. His poor reputation does not trouble him greatly: he attributes it to others’ fear and does not deny his violent methods 147 224 242.

Porridge Bowl and Negative Energy

His soul-bound Porridge Bowl collects negative energy and produces millet porridge, which supports cultivation and strengthens the soul 2 4 11.

• People strongly connected to fate produce more negative energy for the bowl, motivating his early approach to Xiao Yan 4.
• Consuming this energy requires enduring negative emotions; prolonged use caused his acquired Woeful Poison Body 5 11.
• One drop temporarily restored the sealed Hai Bodong to Dou Wang strength for approximately four hours 15.
• Soul Solution directly strengthens the soul and stimulates Dou Qi. Spirit Realm advancement also allows solutions containing emotional poisons 45 135.

Unlike Xiao Yi Xian, Sun Buxiao was not born with his poison constitution. It developed as a side effect of consuming negative energy from childhood 5.

• His original Netherworld Poison Flame remains within him when he helps Xiao Yi Xian absorb a separate wild flame of the same kind 152 153.
• By the end of his month-long seclusion, he has fused and swallowed two Heavenly Flames, leaving a grayish-pink flame over his body before it withdraws inside him 246 247.

Kicking Techniques and Mobility

Sun Buxiao favors kicks rather than weapons, partly to keep one hand free for his bowl and retain the ability to escape 50.

Body Tempering and Scorpion Tail

He experiments with condensing toxins and Dou Qi within his body rather than continually increasing poison intake 61.
