Background / History
Childhood and selection as heir
Hua had neither a father nor a mother when Xianyu took responsibility for her. At ten, she was treated at the Alchemy Commission, where he learned her name and gender and sought Akivili’s advice on raising her. He subsequently tried to recruit her as his heir, concealing his need for her ability to use Fenghuang Down to erase memories 221 222 251.
Their early relationship was combative. Xianyu showered her with property and extravagant promises, but also threatened to embarrass her at the Academy to secure her agreement to become his successor. Hua reluctantly accepted, then smashed a stone stool to demonstrate that she did not need his bodyguards 227 233.
Her upbringing was a collective effort. Guan Liang, the Xianzhou generals, Lan, and Akivili all helped raise her, while Zandar became her teacher. Despite Xianyu’s unstable mental condition, he continued trying to prepare her for leadership 161 233.
Education and succession
Hua studied at the Academy while learning the work of the Six Commissions. During school holidays, she accompanied the generals across the Xianzhou ships and their affiliated planets. Xianyu also gave her vehicles and fishing grounds specifically so she would learn to use them 250 251.
By eighteen, she had visited every great ship. Her future responsibilities already restricted her public appearances: as the Alliance’s intended successor, she could not participate publicly as freely as other students 255.
At twenty, Hua learned of Xianyu’s death on the day of her coming-of-age ceremony and had to take over as Marshal. His recorded farewell finally acknowledged her as his daughter, a relationship neither had openly named beforehand 284 285 335 336.
He left her Fenghuang Down, extensive possessions, saved red envelopes from her childhood, and the Aether-Phase Engine. His final instructions entrusted her with protecting the Starsea while leaving the decision to use the engine entirely to her 290 292.
Nearly a millennium as Marshal
Hua pledged her life to universal peace, human rights, and the eradication of injustice. Over nearly a thousand years, she personally joined military campaigns and mediated disputes between star systems 297 299.
Throughout that period, she kept the bloodstained fragments delivered by Aha concealed. She also stopped celebrating her birthday, which had become inseparable from the day she learned of her father’s death 162 285 299 335.
Appearance
- Hair: Long, gray-blue hair; a later passage describes her as gray-haired 40 370.
- Build: Relatively short and slender beside imposing figures such as Teng Xiao 40.
- Growth: By eighteen, she needed only to lift her head slightly to meet Xianyu’s eyes rather than crane her neck 251.
- Clothing: Wore a suit at the gathering where she learned of Xianyu’s death 285.
Personality
Hua is disciplined, composed, and accustomed to concealing her reactions. Her childhood clashes with Xianyu taught her to maintain an unchanged expression even when bewildered. As Marshal, she seldom exposes vulnerability and takes failures under her administration personally 250 299 330 337.
Unlike Xianyu, Hua retains the ordinary values shared by Xianzhou natives. She firmly believes that anyone who can be saved should be saved, and she connects the Alliance’s strength with its people’s ability to travel safely and live freely 161 251 255.
Her protectiveness toward Xianyu can override her respect for his choices. Although she initially resolves not to impose her wishes on him, she is prepared to erase his memories or restrain him if that is necessary to prevent another death. Later, she considers keeping him under supervision for ten years before accepting whatever choice he makes 164 299 338.
She also shares his mischievous streak. Hua teases him with withheld answers, retaliates against his provocations, and eventually supports extravagant tributes partly because she enjoys his reaction. She does not covet power or money and recognizes that she needs a successor if she is ever to retire 40 163 336 360 370.
Abilities & Skills
Martial Arts
Hua has practiced martial arts since childhood and normally rises early to train 293 380.
- Smashed a stone stool as a child to demonstrate her strength 233.
- Recognized Zandar from his footsteps before turning to look at him 380.
- Later sparred with Chenzhen and Daiyang for two rounds 388.
Fenghuang Down
Hua can use Fenghuang Down, an item capable of manipulating consciousness, creating illusions, and erasing memories 111 324.
- Its memory-erasing function can alleviate the accumulation of memories associated with becoming mara-struck 111 164.
- During Xianyu’s original lifetime, she could use it only when he willingly produced it; she obtained it after his death 111 164 290.
- She considers using it to protect the reincarnated Xianyu from his recovered memories 300 337.
- Whether it can erase those particular memories remains uncertain; Hua contemplates borrowing an Aeon’s power if it cannot 337.
Divine Blessing
Hua possesses a portion of divine power bestowed by Lan 303.
- Can use the bestowed power to contact the Reignbow Arbiter 303.
- Her blessing differs from those granted to the other generals 313.
- Lan offered her an Emanator-making arrow during childhood, but the supplied passages do not establish its use or explicitly confirm an Emanator title for her 228.
Command and Diplomacy
Hua combines military command with interstellar administration 299.
- Personally accompanies subordinates on campaigns against abominations 299.
- Mediates disputes between star systems as Star-Sea Overseer 299.
- Requires psychological clearance before affected personnel can return to battle 191.
- Directs investigations into the Former Marshal’s death, missing researchers, and the Cangcheng 172 198 300.
- Negotiates with Dan Feng over memories and Vidyadhara secret arts 338.
Training Limitations
- Could not successfully learn Xianyu’s talisman drawing; childhood practice was followed by a fever, prompting him to burn the practice papers 227 299.
- Repeatedly fails to keep plants alive, including all the money trees Xianyu sent her 191 298.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Fenghuang Down — Inherited from Xianyu after his death; central to her plans to protect him and address memory-related illness 290 292 300.
- Tenseiga — Resurrection sword received as bloodstained fragments after Xianyu’s death. Hua secretly kept it for centuries and commissioned Yingxing to restore it. Only someone with a compassionate heart can wield it; no use by Hua is documented 162 172 322.
- Aether-Phase Engine — Megastructure left under her authority. Xianyu describes it as capable of turning other stars into black holes, crushing planets into minerals, and, if successful, moving the Xianzhou into a higher-dimensional world. He expects Hua would never choose to activate it 290.
- Jade Abacus — Used for communication, official orders, records, and access control. She also preserved Xianyu’s final Jade Abacus and recorded messages 292 303 321.
- Travel assets — Gifts from Xianyu included a house, luxury cruise ship, yacht, starskiff, and fishing grounds 227 251.
- Gemstone crown — Coming-of-age gift accompanied by Xianyu’s warning to reject any suitor whose engagement ring had a smaller stone 255.
Relationships
- Xianyu — Guardian, adoptive father, and predecessor. Hua knows his emotional habits intimately and works to preserve both his life and his chance at an ordinary, happy existence. Their reincarnated circumstances create the awkward public impression that she is his guardian rather than his daughter 118 285 298 300 372.
- Guan Liang / Chief Strategist — Co-guardian, adviser, and source of reassurance. He handles parental duties Xianyu neglects, supports her leadership, and comforts her through her unresolved grief 241 250 299 372.
- Lan / Reignbow Arbiter — Childhood mentor and source of divine power. Their relationship becomes confrontational over Xianyu’s recovered memories and Hua’s determination to save him regardless of his wishes 161 228 299 338.
- Akivili — Helped raise Hua and suggested using Fenghuang Down to prevent Xianyu’s death from mara-related problems 111 161.
- Zandar — Teacher and adviser. He recommends countering Xianyu’s teasing with praise and declarations of affection 233.
- Chenzhen — One of the generals who raised her; later sparred with her alongside Daiyang 162 388.
- Jingliu — Subordinate and Xianyu’s eventual wife. Hua respects her military achievements, approves the marriage documents, and helps her understand Xianyu’s psychological struggles without forcing her to remain in the relationship 164 301 313.
- Teng Xiao — Subordinate general who reports to Hua about Xianyu, Yingxing’s repair work, and Jingliu’s marriage application 26 172 299 342.
- Yingxing — Master Forger hired to repair Tenseiga. Hua chose him partly because his lack of access to the Former Marshal’s dossier helped preserve the sword’s secrecy 162 172.
- Marty — Xianyu’s cherished researcher. Hua has little personal rapport with him but recognizes his importance to her father and investigates the possibility that he survived 198 303 337.
- Aha — An Aeon she distrusts. Their first encounter followed her father’s death, when Aha delivered bloodied fragments; she later discovered his involvement in the ten-billion-Strale auction and repayment of Xianyu’s IOU 163 285 371.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Protecting the Reincarnated Former Marshal
After genetic testing identifies a child as Xianyu, Hua destroys the report, orders secrecy, and refuses to investigate his origins further. She and Guan Liang arrange for a married couple to raise him, hoping to prevent his former followers from spoiling him 298.
She later watches his graduation ball without revealing herself. When Lan insists that Xianyu will recover his memories, Hua openly declares that she will do everything possible to save him, even if he objects 299.
Investigating His Death and Recovering Tenseiga
Hua hires Yingxing to restore the shattered sword she concealed after Xianyu’s death. Its reconstruction identifies it as Tenseiga and gives her new grounds to investigate Marty and the researchers 162 172.
Her investigation also uncovers concealed details about Guan Liang’s visit to the Xuling and Xianyu’s ability to cure the mara-struck. Fearing that restored memories will make her father leave again, she prepares Fenghuang Down and returns to the Luofu 300.
Jingliu’s Marriage and the Luofu Crisis
Hua approves Jingliu’s marriage application after explaining Xianyu’s emotional suppression, avoidance of intimacy, and self-destructive tendencies. She also presents the gifts he secretly arranged for Jingliu 301.
When Xianyu appears likely to leave, Hua orders that no one may depart the Luofu. She later attempts to secure a hug as an opportunity to knock him unconscious, but he puts her to sleep with Mirror Flower, Water Moon and leaves instead 303 324.
Following the crisis, she confronts Imbibitor Lunae, negotiates with Dan Feng, and considers strict supervision rather than accepting another immediate loss 336 338.
Restoring the Former Marshal’s Legacy
Hua proposes Walking Alongside You, a history book recording Xianyu’s forgotten subordinates. She later helps revise textbooks and his public identity under the name Xian Zhiyu 322 368 370.
Although initially wary of another wave of Marshal worship, she eventually authorizes Guan Liang’s plan to fund statues throughout the Xianzhou 360 384.
IF Timeline: “Blasphemy”
In the alternate timeline, Hua recognizes that Xianyu’s proposal to adopt Jingliu is an attempt to reject Jingliu’s romantic feelings. She warns Jingliu directly, prioritizing her father’s fragile mental state and stating that she would accept either another younger sister or another candidate for Marshal 332 333.
