Boom!!!
Another merciless grenade blast.
Unit One had decided that if it could not find the enemy, it would destroy every piece of cover around it.
Preserving precious murals or stone sculptures was not a consideration in its systems.
Machine guns, grenade launchers-every weapon opened fire at full power.
The rubble concealing Gron was blasted apart. Artillery fire hammered the ground beside him, sending shards of stone flying like blades as dust billowed up to obscure his sight.
But before the dust could settle, the Titan came trampling forward with ponderous strides. A machine equipped with thermal scanners did not need clear air to fight.
Every footfall shook the ground, cracks spreading outward from beneath its feet.

That fleeting opening was exactly what Gron had been waiting for. He seized it and sprinted forward with all his strength.
He leaped from a chunk of rubble jutting out of the ground and landed against the armor covering a mechanical connector in its leg, then immediately kept climbing.
Unit One did not notice him. When its ranged attacks failed to hit their targets, it switched to the massive alloy blade extending from the crook of its other arm.
With a shrill whistle, the blade swept down at the figures in the dust, its passing wind gouging deep furrows into the hard pavement.
