Background / History
Succession and the Exile Tribe
Gron grew up among the wandering tribe, hearing stories that divine protection could free bugs from hunger and homelessness. He became chief after his predecessor died defending the tribe against a beast inhabiting a cave they had entered to escape a storm. Gron took up the chief’s spear and continued the defense, receiving a severe facial scar in the battle 4.
The beast provided little edible meat, forcing the survivors to resume their migration without adequate food. Starvation and exhaustion killed more bugs than the battle itself; some sacrificed their lives so their bodies could feed the others. By the time Isara found another shelter, Gron counted only fifty-two survivors—nearly half the number he had inherited as chief 4.
Becoming the Sunfire God’s First Believers
Inside the shelter, the tribe discovered a ruined temple containing a damaged statue and moss-ball offerings. Gron ordered the food distributed despite Isara’s warning against taking divine offerings, then led the tribe in prayer. When Counterattack Flies attacked and their king nearly swallowed him, he begged the unseen god to save his people. Lin Jin appeared as a floating flame, drove back the predators, and accepted Gron and the tribe as his first believers 5 6.
Their first trial was to clear the corridor behind the temple. Gron and Isara could not overcome the Husk Bully King until Lin Jin blessed Gron. He killed the king, led the tribe to reclaim the corridor without casualties, and renewed their allegiance. Lin Jin then named them the Ashen Clan 7 8.
The Sunrise Expedition
Lin Jin appointed Gron to lead the reclamation effort while Isara became Pontiff. Gron also escorted a starving firefly clan into the temple at his god’s command. After the mountain’s ground-level floor was secured, he received orders to continue upward 9 10 13.
With Isara’s assistance, Gron persuaded the Ashen Clan to accept new expedition rules and united its warriors with the Glow Clan. The force departed on January 16, Year 1 of the New Calendar, and Aemon named it the Sunrise Expedition. Gron subsequently directed the campaign against the Black Shell Plains’ aggressive beasts, where the expedition established its first bonfire outpost 14 17.
On January 21, a massed beast attack forced the army behind its camp fortifications. Mortas and the mantises broke the assault, providing badly needed reinforcements but intensifying Gron’s fear that the Ashen Clan would lose its place as the expedition’s main force. Lin Jin reassured him of the clan’s importance and granted its warriors stable Soulfire 22 23 24 26.
The Sacrificial Grounds and Upper Layer
Although Gron and Mortas set aside their initial prejudices against one another, they continued competing over which clan would lead the next advance. Lin Jin redirected the expedition toward the Sacrificial Grounds with instructions to seek communication with the Snail Shaman and avoid hostilities. Gron later interrupted the shaman’s ritual with a rapid-response squad and took him prisoner 27 28 29.
Further sweeps of the Sacrificial Grounds uncovered a hidden passage upward. During the Upper Layer campaign, Gron and Mortas held defensive lines against a sudden swarm emerging from dark caves, preventing it from spreading into neighboring ecosystems despite mounting casualties 32 39.
The Royal City Campaign
By February 6, Gron’s army had reached the desolate Royal Station and the heavily defended gate leading to the Royal City. After repeated probing assaults failed, he refused to expend his elite Walkers merely to breach the entrance. He instead allowed the returned Snail Shaman to attempt an alternative; the shaman destroyed the gate with his Point-Detonation Rune, and Gron recruited him as the army’s magic instructor 39 46.
Inside the Royal City, Gron commanded the assault against the ancient Iron Army. He and Mortas cooperated to destroy a large war machine, but Number Seven subsequently overwhelmed him with superior armor and brute force. After his longtime spear broke, the Snail Shaman supplied a Soulfire-resonant replacement. Gron named it Fireflow Cloud, severed Number Seven’s right fist, and challenged the machine to continue fighting 47 48 49.
Appearance
- Facial scar: A vicious scar left by the beast battle preceding his succession as chief 4.
- One intact eye: His lone eye is noted while preparing for the divine trial and during the Royal City fighting 6 47.
- Flame markings: His first blessing produces burning-trace markings across his body and a flame pattern on his mask 7.
- Sturdier build: Continued growth makes his original mask fit poorly, prompting him to commission a replacement 13.
- Sunfire-inspired mask: The replacement imitates the Sunfire God’s mask in curvature and openings, but is crudely made, lacks its delicate embellishments, and is only half its length 13.
Personality
Gron defines his responsibilities through the survival of his clan. During the migration, he conceals his uncertainty because he believes their chief and strongest fighter must not show weakness. His determination earns the clan’s affection: even after receiving divine power, he uses it to secure their future rather than consolidate his own position 4 10.
His devotion to Lin Jin combines gratitude with a persistent need to prove useful. He obeys the god’s orders without questioning their purpose and insists that believers must show reverence even when Lin Jin dismisses formalities. Unlike Isara’s immediate optimism, Gron initially treats divine protection as something the clan must earn through service 6 13 26.
That insecurity becomes more pronounced as other followers demonstrate talents his clan lacks. The mantises’ fighting ability and the Snail Shaman’s mastery of Soulfire both make him fear replacement. His increased capacity for thought also leaves him prone to overthinking, although he suppresses his objections when they conflict with his lord’s decisions 22 24 39.
His compassion is initially clan-bound rather than universal: he remains unmoved by the starving fireflies’ condition while escorting them. As a commander, however, he values his soldiers’ lives, favors measured advances, and refuses unnecessary expenditure of elite troops 10 39 48.
Abilities & Skills
Enhanced Physiology
His first divine blessing primarily strengthens his body rather than his magic 8.
- Gains enough strength to smash the Husk Bully King into a wall and kill it with a thrown spear 8.
- Opens and closes a massive stone gate alone; accompanying warriors say even fifty bugs could not move its stones 10 11.
- Receives maximized resistance to paralysis, poison, burns, and mind control 10.
- Remains vulnerable to sufficiently powerful physical attacks: Number Seven inflicts internal bleeding despite few visible external wounds 48.
Life-Force Growth
Lin Jin implants a special mechanism that absorbs slain bugs’ life force, functioning like an experience system 13.
- Supports continued physical growth and sharper perception after the initial blessing 13.
- His facial markings shine more brightly as he kills enemies 9.
- Has an eventual upper limit, though Lin Jin considers him far from it when assessing his progress 13.
Spear and Shield Combat
Gron fights aggressively to draw enemies away from his clanspeople, pairing powerful spear swings with shield counters 5.
- Uses striking force and momentum to move between targets 8.
- Throws his spear with enough force to pierce a large enemy and embed it in the wall beyond 8.
- Coordinates with Mortas to exploit openings against enemies neither can safely overpower alone 47.
Soulfire Arts
Stable Soulfire gives Gron another source of combat power, though he is not especially skilled at using it 26 49.
- Channels energy into spear throws, including the attack that destroys an Iron Army war machine’s exposed core 47.
- Burns Soulfire more fiercely to bolster himself under extreme pressure 48 49.
- Resonates with Fireflow Cloud, producing a crimson energy layer capable of cutting Number Seven’s thick armor 49.
Military Command
Gron’s approach develops from leading frontal charges into coordinated, methodical warfare 17 23 48.
- Campaign planning: Gathers intelligence and attacks the toughest opponent while supplies are plentiful; the drawback is rapid early consumption of provisions 26.
- Fortification: Orders the temporary camp fortified before the Black Shell Plains counterattack, preventing the army from meeting the herd’s charge in the open 23.
- Five-bug encirclement teams: Combines a shield-bearing attacker, two Nail-Spear users, a crossbowman, and a relief soldier to maintain pressure on stronger targets 47.
- Force preservation: Reserves the elite Walkers for dangers beyond the Royal City gate rather than committing them to a costly breach 39.
- Discipline: Trains the Ashen Clan to execute battlefield orders instinctively, coordinating shield guards, spearmen, and crossbowmen as a unified force 48.
Emblem System
Gron develops the Emblem System after studying the Sunfire God’s notes on potential. It identifies effective charm combinations for bugs following particular paths 48.
- Accounts for ordinary mortals’ limitations: wearing excessive charms is dangerous, while learning many spells without a special bloodline risks only superficial mastery 48.
- His personal ashen way uses a burning-flame emblem divided into the outer flame, inner flame, and heart of the flame, with slots distributed across those sections 48.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Nameless Long Spear: An unusually durable weapon unearthed from ancient ruins by the previous chief and inherited by Gron. It serves as an important tribal symbol before its spearhead finally breaks against Number Seven 4 47 49.
- Beast-scale shield: Made from the hardest armored scales of the beast fought during the tribe’s earlier search for shelter 4.
- Sunfire-inspired mask: Commissioned from the clan’s Mask Maker after Gron outgrows his original mask 13.
- Fireflow Cloud: A unique spear forged by the Snail Shaman using his best materials and special engravings that resonate with Soulfire. It has a slender form, a concave diamond-shaped head, twin blood grooves, and Flame Cloud Engraving along its shaft. Gron names it after using it to cut apart Number Seven’s right fist 49.
Relationships
- Lin Jin / Sunfire God — Lord, protector, and source of Gron’s divine blessings. Gron is his first blessed bug and one of his original fifty-two believers; Lin Jin recognizes his insecurity and reassures him that the Ashen Clan remains essential 5 6 9 26.
- Isara — Originally his second-in-command and scout, later Pontiff. She helps him lead the first trial, persuade the clan to accept expedition reforms, and maintain its supply support from Ashen City 4 7 9 14 17.
- Mortas — Reinforcement commander, rival, and battlefield ally. Their initial mutual suspicion gives way to cooperation, but both continue seeking achievements for their respective clans 24 25 27 47.
- Snail Shaman — Initially a captive whom Gron distrusts, later the expedition’s magic instructor. He opens the Royal City gate and supplies Fireflow Cloud at a decisive moment 29 39 46 49.
- Aemon — Chronicler whose recorded wisdom benefits Gron; names the united army’s mission the Sunrise Expedition 14.
- Previous chief — Predecessor who chose Gron as his successor, taught him about gods and prayer, and left him the tribe’s symbolic spear 4 5.
