Background / History
Human life and transmigration
Lin Jin was a longtime Hollow Knight fan who bought Silksong on release after waiting six years. He initially avoided guides, but repeated failures eventually drove him to seek help. After playing without sufficient rest and spending hours struggling against the encounter involving Groal the Great, he collapsed and died 1.
He regained consciousness as a bodiless soul in a cave containing the remnants of an ancient civilization. Unable to return home, he accepted his situation calmly and investigated his new condition. Although he no longer needed food, sleep, or breathing, his movement remained restricted to the ruins 1 2.
Establishing the Sunfire faith
A group of more than fifty insect refugees sheltered in the temple and ate moss balls he had gathered. Their subsequent prayers supplied his first faith points. Discovering that belief could strengthen him, Lin Jin deliberately lured Counterattack Flies into the ruins to stage a rescue and convince the refugees that he could provide a safe home 2 3.
His first grand display was an enormous fireball that exhausted his available faith. It looked far more powerful than it actually was, but successfully secured Gron’s clan as his first believers. Lin Jin then adopted the story of an ancient guardian god weakened after repelling the Void—a constructed history rather than his actual past 6 7.
After blessing Gron and helping the clan reclaim the temple corridor, he named them the Ashen Clan. Their settlement became Ashen City, where he appointed Gron to oversee the expedition and Isara to manage faith and territorial development 8 9.
Rebuilding the mountain kingdom
Lin Jin admitted starving fireflies and welcomed them as the Glow Clan. Their records revealed the dangers of the wasteland and the destructive influence of gods on earlier civilizations. Recognizing their scholarly abilities, he commissioned Aemon to preserve history and knowledge, eventually establishing the Great Library 10 12 19.
Once his followers secured the mountain’s ground-level floor, Lin Jin chose to expand upward toward the Royal Capital. Descending offered resources but risked encountering the Void, whose corrosive traces he had discovered below. His flames supplied the reclaimed territory with the heat and light needed to sustain life 13.
He subsequently recruited Mortas and the mantises, placing them under Gron’s expedition command. After their battlefield success, he strengthened them and named them the Hunter Clan. He also reassured the Ashen Clan that their lack of a natural specialty did not make them replaceable, choosing them as the first recipients of his stabilized Soulfire Arts 21 25 26.
The Snail Shaman and Ironkeep
After accidentally injuring a Snail Shaman who was observing Ashen City, Lin Jin pursued communication rather than hostility. He regarded the shamans as dangerous potential enemies but valuable researchers 27 28.
The shaman’s criticism of rigid worship practices prompted Lin Jin to recognize that territorial expansion alone could not maintain a healthy faith. He demanded useful historical knowledge, then studied the shaman’s Ironhold Chronicles, which described Ironkeep’s rise and destruction after its king’s pursuit of immortality unleashed the Void 31 35 36.
Lin Jin accepted the shaman as his priest and transferred his Soulfire research to him. Having acknowledged his own limitations as a researcher, he entrusted further experimentation to a specialist 36.
Expansion into the Royal Airfield
Lin Jin secretly helped Raily steal a fragment of light from Bastion City, recognizing her as a descendant of the ancient civilization. Rather than wage a costly war against her people, he used her as an opening for religious expansion 37.
Through a dream filled with heroic stories, he persuaded Raily to accept his Essence and become the Flame Saintess. The transformation strengthened her body and restored her missing hands. He then encouraged her to spread his faith among the Royal Airfield’s exploited inhabitants 40 41.
Raily’s Sunfire Church grew rapidly among the lower classes. When Gear Council forces raided a gathering, they initially evaded Lin Jin’s senses; he observed the confrontation and considered manifesting if they attempted to kill the congregation. Raily surrendered in exchange for her followers’ safety 45.
Appearance
Lin Jin initially has no visible body. His public divine form is a deliberately designed persona rather than a description of his former human appearance 1 7.
- Colors: Orange and red, accented by black stripes 7.
- Carapace: A perfectly formed black shell with a polished, sculptural appearance 7.
- Horns: Described as flawless in length and color 7.
- Mask marking: A flame-shaped design stretching across half the mask 7.
- Presentation: An androgynous beauty intended to appeal to all insects 7.
- Alternate guise: Appears to Raily as a kindly old man during her dream 40.
Personality
Lin Jin combines adaptability with a strong survival instinct. Despite his frustrated final hours as a gamer, he accepts transmigration without prolonged panic. His pursuit of Godhood comes from wanting safety and freedom in a world where greater beings can casually destroy weaker lives 1 3.
He is pragmatic and willing to manipulate appearances. His intimidating fireball, invented divine history, and carefully managed miracles help him gather followers before he possesses the strength his persona implies. He also prefers recruitment over unnecessary conflict, especially when warfare would damage populations or technologies he hopes to acquire 6 7 28 37.
His concern for followers is nevertheless genuine. He quietly prevents battlefield casualties, rewards service, refuses to distribute a technique that would consume ordinary insects’ lives, and reassures the Ashen Clan when they fear being displaced by stronger recruits 7 19 25 26.
Lin Jin values knowledge and accepts criticism when it reveals a practical problem. The Snail Shaman’s challenge leads him to reconsider his neglect of spiritual welfare, while his stalled research convinces him to delegate Soulfire development rather than pretend expertise he lacks 12 31 36.
Abilities & Skills
Faith Absorption and Divine Growth
Belief supplies Essence that strengthens Lin Jin and replenishes his usable power 3 6.
- Temporary prayer can provide faith without creating permanent followers 3.
- Naming clans establishes a connection beyond faith alone 8 12 25.
- Symbolic offerings feed his divinity and allow worshippers to receive strength and nourishment in return 25.
- His status panel displays his condition; it has no demonstrated shop, lottery, or other reward-system functions 3.
- Dependence on worship is a weakness: losing believers can diminish his power, and he recognizes that faith-dependent gods may die without worshippers 12 26.
- His divine persona must remain credible; its collapse could undermine the faith supporting him 45.
Psychokinesis and Spiritual Movement
Initially called Telekinesis, this art lets him move objects remotely while his bodiless state allows him to float and pass through walls 2 6 45.
- His earliest lifting limit is approximately 500 grams 2.
- Uses subtle object manipulation to engineer apparent coincidences that protect followers in combat 7.
- Can move through stone, but his permitted range expands through believers and occupied territory rather than being unlimited 6 8.
- Uses a dropped pebble to prompt Raily into action 41.
Flame, Light, and Temperature
Fire is Lin Jin’s strongest affinity, despite experiments with water, lightning, and wind. His recognized divine office is Flame, with authorities over Light, Temperature, and Reaction 9 45.
- Maintains heat and illumination across reclaimed territory, supporting plants and insects 12 13.
- Sustains the artificial sun on which Ashen City’s ecosystem depends 19.
- Produces temperatures of several thousand degrees to smelt metal without conventional equipment, at the cost of Essence 25.
- His earliest giant fireball is largely theatrical: contact would deliver only a single soul blast despite its size 6.
Soulfire Arts
Soulfire burns the soul as fuel to release energy into the outside world. Ordinary insects can learn it, but its source remains connected to Lin Jin 19.
- Initial limitation: The crude version wastes energy and would rapidly consume ordinary users’ lives 19.
- Refinement: Stabilizes the technique before teaching it to the Ashen Clan 26.
- Flame Burst: Compresses gathered energy and releases it in a single explosion; Lin Jin transmits its instructions directly into a captain’s soul 20.
- Runic application: Powers the Essence-fueled array that keeps his miniature sun operating between refuelings 19.
- Research limitation: Lin Jin understands the theory better than its practical development and passes his findings to the Snail Shaman 36.
Divine Blessings and Infusion
Lin Jin can invest divine power in followers to elevate their existence and strengthen particular qualities 8 9 45.
- Gron: Gains exceptional physical strength and extensive resistance to paralysis, poison, burns, and mind control 8 10.
- Kill-based growth: A special mechanism placed in Gron absorbs defeated enemies’ life force, allowing continued strengthening 13.
- Isara: Gains greatly increased soul power, enabling Soul Strike and levitation 9.
- Mantises: Receive strengthening Essence, limited initially by what their bodies can withstand 25.
- Raily: Her transformation restores her hands and enhances her body 40 41.
Bonfire Network and Divine Perception
Worshippers’ bonfires become symbolic extensions of Lin Jin rather than ordinary burning wood 17 18.
- Extend his perception and transmit portions of his power 18.
- Allow him to move his will between established fires and manifest through flames 19 25 35.
- His bond with Raily gives him another foothold for observing the Royal Airfield 41.
- Divine sight cannot penetrate the haze above the wasteland, and Gear Council forces demonstrate that his detection can be evaded 35 45.
- Although he can communicate through Raily’s dream, he is not a dream-controlling deity and cannot precisely alter its passage of time 40.
