Background / History

Childhood and Reputation

Harry became famous for surviving Voldemort’s attack. Neville’s grandmother credits him with defeating You-Know-Who and saving the wizarding world, while Voldemort resents the fame Harry gained from his downfall 5 32.

His parents died protecting him. Voldemort says his father fought rather than surrender, while his mother refused to abandon Harry and sacrificed her life for him. Her protective magic remains active during Harry’s first year at Hogwarts 32.

Harry lives with the Dursleys at 4 Privet Drive. He describes being confined to the cupboard beneath the stairs and repeatedly bullied by Dudley; the prospect of returning there makes him envy his friends’ Christmas plans 18 35.

Arrival at Hogwarts

John Wick first sees Harry beside Hagrid at the Leaky Cauldron and recognizes him by his lightning-shaped scar. Harry later meets Draco Malfoy at Madam Malkin’s robe shop 2.

On the Hogwarts Express, Harry meets Ron and Hermione. Before the students enter Hogwarts, Malfoy offers to help Harry choose the “right” friends while insulting Ron’s family. Harry rejects the offer rather than accept Malfoy’s judgment of his friend 4 5.

Flying Lessons and the Midnight Duel

During their first flying lesson, Malfoy uses Neville’s dropped Remembrall to taunt Harry. The resulting incident reveals Harry’s talent as a Seeker to Professor McGonagall 8.

Harry and Ron also fall for Malfoy’s promised midnight duel. Joined by Hermione, Neville, and John, they evade Filch and Peeves; afterward, Harry and Ron speculate about the trapdoor beneath the enormous three-headed dog and its possible connection to Hagrid’s visit to Gringotts 8 9.

Quidditch and the Troll

Harry receives a Nimbus 2000 and instructions to attend Quidditch training. His enthusiasm contrasts with Ron’s envy of the expensive broom 11.

During practice, Harry’s low flight precedes a Bludger flying toward John and Hermione. John catches it and dislocates his arm. Harry insists on taking him to the Hospital Wing and apologizes to Hermione, helping end the tension between them 13.

At Halloween, Harry remembers that Hermione does not know a troll is loose. He and Ron leave the evacuation group to find her, then follow the troll after learning that John has lured it away. Hermione’s attempt to take responsibility afterward helps reconcile the trio, and Harry and Ron become John’s friends 15 16.

Before his first documented Quidditch match, Harry is so nervous that he struggles to eat. Despite his broom temporarily going out of control, he catches the Golden Snitch in his mouth and secures Gryffindor’s 170–60 victory over Slytherin 17.

The Mirror of Erised

While sneaking into the Restricted Section under his Invisibility Cloak, Harry opens a screaming book and alerts Filch. His escape leads him to the Mirror of Erised, where John catches up with him 21.

Harry sees his parents and other relatives standing behind his reflection. He presses his hands against the glass and becomes reluctant to leave, longing to join the family he has never known. He subsequently invites Ron to see the mirror 21 22.

Dumbledore explains that the mirror shows what its viewer longs for and tells Harry it will be moved. Harry stops visiting, though dreams of Voldemort killing his parents continue afterward 22 23.

Investigating the Philosopher’s Stone

Harry suspects that Snape wants the package Hagrid removed from Gringotts. Hagrid’s accidental mention of Nicolas Flamel gives the trio a lead, and John later supplies Harry with a Chocolate Frog wizard card to help their search 17 18 22.

Harry’s suspicions strengthen when he sees Snape threatening Quirrell in the Forbidden Forest. John challenges his interpretation, but Harry insists that he witnessed the encounter and wants John to know what happened 24 25.

Following the nighttime operation to send Norbert away, Harry, Hermione, and Neville cost Gryffindor 150 points. Their house turns against them, with Harry receiving most of the resentment because of his fame 28.

During the later Forbidden Forest incident, Harry witnesses a green light that resembles the one in his dreams. After John is injured, Harry and Hermione are too worried to sleep; neither Harry nor the other witnesses uses the incident to seek attention 29.

Confrontation Beneath the Trapdoor

Harry urgently questions Hagrid about the stranger who gave him Norbert’s egg. He later reaches the final chamber beneath the trapdoor ahead of Hermione and John 30 31.

There, Harry discovers that Quirrell—not Snape—is the enemy. The Mirror of Erised places the Philosopher’s Stone in his pocket, and he tries to conceal this by claiming that he sees himself celebrating Gryffindor’s House Cup victory 32.

Voldemort exposes the lie, takes control of Quirrell’s body, binds Harry, and retrieves the Stone. Harry refuses to surrender willingly and declares that he will defeat Voldemort. When Voldemort touches him, Harry’s mother’s protection blisters the possessed body 32.

As Voldemort attempts to leave with the Stone, John attacks from concealment and destroys the body he occupies. Harry remains bound by Voldemort’s magic and initially cannot understand the apparently invisible attacker’s actions 32 33.

End of First Year and Summer

Harry returns from the Hospital Wing disappointed that Gryffindor lost its match against Ravenclaw in his absence. After learning that John saved him, he accepts Slytherin’s eventual House Cup victory more readily, though Malfoy’s smugness still irritates him 33 34.

Back with the Dursleys, Harry initially uses Hagrid’s advice to keep them from bossing him around. That advantage disappears when Vernon learns from a Ministry warning that Harry cannot use magic outside school 35 43.

Dobby ruins Harry’s birthday, warns him not to return to Hogwarts, and causes trouble that results in Harry being locked in a room with a covered window. His unanswered letters worry his friends, prompting John to visit. Harry eventually leaves in the Weasleys’ flying car and stays at the Burrow 43 44 50.

While shopping for his second year, Harry accidentally arrives in Knockturn Alley. John intervenes when an old witch corners him, and Hagrid helps reunite him with Hermione and the Weasleys. Harry later feels mortified while posing for photographs with Gilderoy Lockhart 47.

At the start of term, Harry and Ron find that they cannot pass through the station barrier and fear missing the Hogwarts Express 50.

Appearance

  • Build: Small and very thin; his initial appearance suggests prolonged malnutrition 2.
  • Clothing: Oversized clothes emphasize his slight frame 2.
  • Eyes: Green, visible behind round glasses 2.
  • Hair: Untidy, resembling his father’s hair in the Mirror of Erised 21.
  • Distinguishing mark: A lightning-shaped scar beneath his hair 2.

Personality

Harry is loyal and willing to take risks for friends. He rejects Malfoy’s attempt to belittle Ron, leaves safety to find Hermione during the troll emergency, and insists that John receive medical attention after the Bludger incident 5 13 15.

His courage does not prevent anxiety or pride. Before his first match, he fears public failure more than falling from his broom; after Malfoy’s duel trap, he struggles to admit that Hermione was right. His conviction that Snape is guilty also persists despite John’s objections 8 17 24 25.

Harry’s deepest longing is for family rather than fame. The Mirror of Erised absorbs him because it shows his parents, while public attention can embarrass him—as demonstrated by his photographs with Lockhart 21 22 47.
