Background
Hermione comes from a Muggle family and is a dentist’s daughter. Before attending Hogwarts, she was a top student and a favorite of her teachers. Her unfamiliarity with the magical world makes her particularly curious about children raised in wizarding families 4.
She meets John Wick at Platform Nine-and-Three-Quarters, where he accidentally knocks her over and then offends her by commenting on her front teeth. They become friendlier aboard the Hogwarts Express after discovering their shared Muggle upbringing. Hermione also befriends Neville Longbottom and volunteers to help find his missing toad, Trevor 4.
Appearance
- Hair: Bushy brown hair, with curls compared to a little lion’s mane 10 47.
- Teeth: Two unusually large front teeth; she dislikes having them pointed out 4 47.
- Mannerisms: Frequently raises her chin or tilts her head upward when introducing herself or expressing confidence 4 5.
Personality
Hermione is inquisitive, outspoken, and academically competitive. She questions Neville persistently about magic, discusses Potions with John, and frequently shares information from Hogwarts: A History. The library becomes her most frequent destination outside the Gryffindor Common Room; Divination is a stated exception to her broad thirst for knowledge 4 5 7 10.
John’s classroom successes turn him into an academic rival. Hermione presses him for explanations after he succeeds at Transfiguration, attempts advanced rune study to keep up with his reading, and organizes an intensive revision schedule to challenge his lead in the final examinations. Despite her effort, she does not surpass him during their first year 10 12 23 25 34.
Her concern for rules initially creates friction with Harry and Ron, particularly when they treat a dangerous nighttime excursion as fun. Beneath her assertiveness, she is deeply hurt by rejection: Ron’s description of her as a “nightmare” sends her to the girls’ bathroom in tears 8 9 14 15.
Hermione is also helpful and loyal. She does not hold her initial grudge against John for long, protects Hagrid’s secret, and lies to Professor McGonagall for the first time to shoulder blame for her friends after the troll attack 4 16 26.
Abilities & Skills
Academic Knowledge and Research
Hermione relies on extensive reading and organized study to solve problems and prepare for lessons 5 20 25.
- Shares knowledge from Hogwarts: A History upon arriving at school 5.
- Creates a list to organize the search for Nicolas Flamel 20.

- Draws Harry, Ron, and Neville into a strict revision schedule with less than ten weeks remaining before examinations 25.
Spellwork
- Counter-curses: Successfully lifts Neville’s Leg-Locker Curse 23.
- Levitation Charm: Practices beforehand and understands how to correct Ron’s wandwork, though John completes the classroom demonstration before she does 14.
- Transfiguration limitation: Fails to complete the paper-clip-to-mouse exercise in the lesson where John becomes the first student to succeed 10.
Advanced Study
- Attempts to study ancient runes after seeing them on John’s reading list, despite the subject being a third-year elective 23.
- Admits that the material is too difficult for her as a first-year student; the attempt leaves her exhausted the following day 23.
Relationships
- John Wick — Close friend and academic rival. Their poor first meeting develops into a friendship across house boundaries. He protects her from a Bludger and the Halloween troll; Harry later identifies her as the member of the trio closest to John 4 9 13 15 26.
- Harry Potter — Friend and fellow member of the Golden Trio. Their early disagreement eases after he apologizes following the Bludger incident. He subsequently rebukes Ron for upsetting her 9 13 14 30.
- Ron Weasley — Friend whose early hostility causes her considerable distress. Her willingness to take blame after the troll attack leads him to put aside his prejudice against her 14 16.
- Neville Longbottom — Friend whom she helps search for Trevor, later frees from a curse, and includes in examination revision 4 23 25.
- Rubeus Hagrid — Friend whose dragon secret she keeps. She argues against involving John because she believes spreading the secret would not help him 25 26.
- Minerva McGonagall — Transfiguration professor and Head of Gryffindor. Hermione’s attempt to take responsibility for the troll incident costs Gryffindor five points 10 16.
- Parvati Patil — Roommate who tells others that Hermione is crying in the girls’ bathroom before the Halloween feast 15.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Arrival and the Forbidden Corridor
Hermione is sorted into Gryffindor and watches John’s Sorting expectantly, hoping not to be separated from her new friend. Despite his placement in Slytherin, they continue spending time together 6 9.
She becomes caught up in Malfoy’s false midnight-duel challenge alongside John, Harry, Ron, and Neville. While fleeing Filch and Peeves, the group enters a locked room and discovers a huge three-headed dog. Hermione’s anger at Harry and Ron’s attitude afterward begins a prolonged disagreement 8 9 11.
Halloween Troll Attack
After overhearing Ron insult her, Hermione spends the afternoon crying in the girls’ bathroom and misses the warning that a troll is loose. John reaches her first, tells her to hide, and draws the troll away. When Harry and Ron find her, she urges them to help John, and all three follow the creature 14 15.
John kills the troll, leaving Hermione, Harry, and Ron sickened by its gruesome death. Hermione then falsely claims she had sought out the troll herself, hoping to protect her friends from punishment. Her intervention helps end Ron’s hostility and strengthens the group’s friendship 15 16.
Philosopher’s Stone Investigation
Hermione joins Harry and Ron in researching Nicolas Flamel, organizing their library search and asking them to continue over the Christmas holidays. Their breakthrough comes when Harry reads Dumbledore’s Chocolate Frog card; Hermione then fetches a book that identifies the Philosopher’s Stone 18 20 23.
During the attempt to reach the Stone, Hermione returns from the later obstacles and finds John beside the newly awakened Ron. She explains that Harry has gone ahead and the antidote for the fifth obstacle has been used up. John sends her and Ron back while he continues to help Harry 31.
Norbert and the Forbidden Forest
Hermione learns about Hagrid’s dragon egg, watches Norbert hatch, and joins the plan to send the dragon to Charlie Weasley in Romania. She keeps the secret from John, unaware that he already knows about the dragon 25 26.
Gryffindor loses 150 points after Harry, Hermione, and Neville are caught out at night. Hermione later accompanies Hagrid’s Forbidden Forest patrol, where she encounters the aftermath of the confrontation with Quirrell. Seeing John injured, she runs to Professor Sprout despite the danger and anxiously asks whether he will recover 28 29.
Summer Correspondence
During the holidays, Hermione writes John letters listing the books she has read and reporting that Harry has not answered her messages. Her concern contributes to John’s decision to check on Harry at the Dursleys’ home 43 44.
She later invites John to Diagon Alley to buy their second-year books and reunites enthusiastically with him, Harry, and Hagrid outside Gringotts 46 47.
Notable Quotes
