Background / History
Hagrid attended Hogwarts, where he experienced bullying and was framed by a Slytherin. His resentment toward that house persists into his work at the school. He also remembers Professor Burbage reading Muggle poetry during his school days, an activity he says gave him headaches 14 22.
Filch bullied Hagrid from his student days onward, privately questioning why someone he considered a nonhuman “monster” could attend Hogwarts when he could not. Hagrid chooses not to dwell on this treatment, emphasizing the good people he has met and Dumbledore’s trust in him 46.
Hagrid was expelled approximately fifty years before the renewed Chamber of Secrets attacks, after a student’s death was blamed on him and his Acromantula, Aragog. He maintains that the accusation was false. Zhang Xiao concludes that an Acromantula could not account for the victim’s condition and regards Hagrid as a scapegoat; the children later identify the dead student as Moaning Myrtle 122 182.
Hagrid placed Aragog in the Forbidden Forest and found him a mate because he feared the spider would be lonely. Their descendants subsequently became the forest’s Acromantula population, a consequence for which Hagrid later apologizes to Zhang Xiao 122 123.
As Hogwarts’ gamekeeper and Keeper of Keys, Hagrid welcomes arriving first-years, leads them across the lake, and delivers them to Professor McGonagall before the Sorting Ceremony 9.
Dumbledore later asks Hagrid to teach Care of Magical Creatures temporarily while Professor Kettleburn recovers at St. Mungo’s. He promises a formal appointment the following term after Hagrid has gained teaching experience. By the third-year students’ first lesson, Hagrid is teaching with an enormous custom-made wand, commissioned from Ollivander after all charges against him were dropped. He has also spent the summer taking supplementary lessons from Flitwick and McGonagall to make up for his interrupted education 162 255.
Appearance
- Height: Over three meters tall when first introduced; Zhang Xiao barely reaches his thigh. A later description places his height at nearly five meters 9 421.
- Face and hair: An enormous face, a wild, bushy beard, and a shaggy head 9 22 46.
- Clothing: An oversized coat made from an unidentified animal’s hide; his rubber boots are roughly the size of baby bathtubs. He also wears a Moleskin Coat while teaching 9 22 255.
- Voice: Rough, booming, and easily heard over the arriving students 9.
- Early courtship attire: A shaggy brown suit and a yellow-and-orange checked tie. His attempt to smooth his hair with a large amount of oily product leaves him looking greasy rather than polished 378.
- Later grooming: After makeovers and the employment of Happy, his hair is neatly slicked back and his beard carefully trimmed. Enormous plain-lens glasses soften his imposing appearance, and he wears a conspicuous large wristwatch 386 452.
- Recreated arrival appearance: For the special Hogwarts welcome arranged for Petunia and the Grangers, he deliberately returns to his old hide coat, tangled beard, and large lantern 458.
Personality
Hagrid is affectionate and demonstrative with the children he befriends. He welcomes guests with tea and rock cakes, and his delight in Zhang Xiao’s wild-boar stew prompts an enthusiastic hug that nearly smothers the boy. His protective instincts remain active during combat: while wrestling a troll, he orders Zhang Xiao and Malfoy to escape 22 39 47.
His warmth coexists with strong house prejudice. He initially objects to Harry bringing a Slytherin into his cabin and bluntly admits that he hates all Slytherins. Harry and Ron’s support, together with Fang’s affection for Zhang Xiao, persuade him to reconsider. He apologizes and offers more rock cakes; later, Zhang Xiao’s sensible response to danger makes him think appreciatively of Slytherins as dependable teammates 22 48.
Hagrid places great weight on Dumbledore’s judgment. He rejects accusations against Snape because Dumbledore trusts him, but his efforts to protect confidential information are imperfect: while warning the children away from Fluffy, he accidentally reveals Nicolas Flamel’s involvement 39.
His love of creatures can make him underestimate the danger they pose to ordinary people. He treats Norbert’s biting as affection and struggles to accept that he cannot keep a growing dragon indefinitely. Conversely, he sincerely accepts responsibility when he learns that Aragog’s descendants endangered Zhang Xiao, apologizing and warning Aragog to control them 76 122 123.
Hagrid is easily moved to tears by kindness and recognition. He initially protests that Zhang Xiao’s Spirit Beast Collar is too precious to accept, cries with relief when Norbert receives permission to live openly, and becomes emotional when Dumbledore expresses confidence in him as a teacher 76 131 162.
His loyalty to Dumbledore is outspoken. When Lucius Malfoy brings the governors’ dismissal order, Hagrid challenges how the signatures were obtained and protests that Dumbledore cannot be taken away. He also attempts to charge Lucius after the latter compares Dumbledore to Voldemort 179 180.
Despite his usual reluctance to criticize Hogwarts teachers, Hagrid openly doubts Lockhart’s claims and resents being lectured about keeping water demons out of his well, something he already knows how to handle 122.
Abilities & Skills
Physical Strength
Hagrid can fight enormous creatures directly, meeting an armored troll’s charge and grappling with it 47.
- Punches the troll’s head and catches its hand to prevent a club strike 47.
- Holds the creature in a contest of strength while urging the students to flee 47.
- His punch does not incapacitate it, and a momentary distraction allows the troll to gain ground against him 47 48.
Creature Knowledge and Tracking
Years of tending animals have given Hagrid practical knowledge of creatures and their habitats 29.
- Recognizes unicorn blood and explains unicorns’ resistance to magic and sensitivity to malicious intent 47.
- Detects tracks that do not belong near the forest’s edge and identifies the charging creature as a troll 47.
- Owns Fluffy, a three-headed dog purchased from a Greek man and lent to Dumbledore for guard duty 39.
- Hatches and raises Norbert, a Norwegian Ridgeback, and continues caring for him after obtaining a special dragon-keeping permit 76 131.
- Explains Augurey legends, the bird’s dangerous song, and its association with magical mishaps through detailed examples 255.
- Identifies the dragon faced by Harry’s group in the first tournament task as a Hebridean Black Dragon. He recalls its territorial requirements, physical characteristics, the MacFusty family’s responsibility for it, and the volcanic sand and geothermal heat needed to hatch its eggs 422.
- Cares for Beauxbatons’ enormous carriage horses during the visiting school’s stay 378.
Gardening and Animal Husbandry
Hagrid is experienced with both plants and animals and has developed techniques of his own 29.
- Grows extraordinarily large pumpkins beside his cabin 22.
- Helps Zhang Xiao tend vegetables; their bok choy grows quickly and thrives under his care 29 39.
- Expands the vegetable patch with house-elf assistance and begins raising Yorkshire pigs 43.
- Misjudges the pigs’ normal size, worrying that they are undernourished and believing they should grow at least a meter tall 43.
- Keeps chickens, but later reports that Norbert has killed and eaten all of them, prompting Zhang Xiao to suspect something is wrong 162.
Magic and Continued Education
After the charges against him are dropped, Hagrid commissions a new wand from Ollivander and resumes the magical education interrupted by his expulsion. He takes extra lessons from Flitwick and McGonagall during the summer 255.
- Makes an enormous golden birdcage containing an Augurey appear in a clearing during class 255.
- Removes the Augurey’s Silencing Charm so students can briefly hear its call 255.
- Earlier gave Dudley a pig’s tail when collecting Harry from the isolated lighthouse, an incident Petunia remembers upon seeing him again 458.
Teaching
Hagrid’s practical knowledge supports his appointment as Care of Magical Creatures professor. Zhang Xiao helps him plan his initial lessons around Norbert and creatures likely to interest students. Older pupils subsequently describe his classes as entertaining and his creatures as gentle and appealing 162 255.
- Uses stories and creature demonstrations to make lessons engaging 255.
- Awards Hermione ten Gryffindor points for her explanation of Augureys 255.
- Ends the Augurey lesson early when Seamus’s spell explosion frightens the bird, remaining behind to comfort it 255.
- Falls back on Flobberworm lessons while dejected over the Augurey’s lasting refusal to sing 281.
- Teaches unicorns and later organizes a buried-coin search using trained nifflers, which Ron wins 452.
Power Progression
| Stage / Development | Demonstrated Ability or Advancement | Notes |

- Large lantern — Nearly half a person tall, used while guiding students and examining the forest trail 9 47.
- Rock cakes — His customary refreshments are so hard that Ron jokes they could serve as weapons. Soaking them in stew broth makes them soft and chewy 23 39.
- Spirit Beast Collar — Zhang Xiao’s belated Christmas gift, capable of controlling a Fantastic Beast’s size and offered as a way to help Hagrid keep Norbert 76.
- Special dragon-keeping permit — Delivered by Zhang Xiao, allowing Norbert to appear openly rather than being hidden from visitors 131.
- Custom wand — An enormous, door-bolt-sized wand commissioned from Ollivander after all charges against Hagrid were dropped. He carries it tucked into his belt 255.

- Zhang Xiao — Initially an unwelcome Slytherin guest, later a friend and gardening partner. Zhang Xiao defends him against Filch and introduces him to Chinese cooking 22 23 29 39 46. They exchange Christmas gifts, with Zhang Xiao later presenting the Spirit Beast Collar as his delayed gift. Zhang also delivers Norbert’s permit, advises Hagrid on teaching, helps him court Madame Maxime, and recommends employing a house-elf 59 76 131 162 409 452.
- Ron Weasley — A welcome guest who vouches for Zhang Xiao. Hagrid recognizes his family and remarks on his longstanding efforts to keep Fred and George out of the Forbidden Forest 22.

- Draco Malfoy — Accompanies Hagrid during the Forbidden Forest detention and later joins the friends visiting his hut. He devises a makeover plan to help Hagrid approach Madame Maxime, which Hagrid gratefully accepts 47 378 386.
- Albus Dumbledore — Hagrid values his trust, lends him Fluffy, and regards his confidence in Snape as sufficient reason to defend the professor 39 46. Dumbledore encourages him to become a teacher and intervenes when the Ministry attempts to remove him, insisting on fair questioning and forbidding his imprisonment in Azkaban 162 179 180.
- Severus Snape — Hagrid rejects the children’s suspicions that Snape sabotaged Harry’s broom or intends to steal the guarded object, pointing out that Snape is also one of its guardians 39.
- Filch — A longstanding bully who continues to insult Hagrid while escorting students to detention 46.
- Fang — His enormous black boarhound. Fang’s unusually friendly response to Zhang Xiao helps Hagrid reconsider his prejudice against the boy 22.
- Norbert — The Norwegian Ridgeback Hagrid hatches and raises with intense affection. He treats the dragon as a good boy despite its biting, hides it from unwelcome visitors, and is overjoyed when it can remain openly at Hogwarts 76 122 131.
- Aragog — The Acromantula associated with Hagrid’s wrongful expulsion. Hagrid relocates him to the Forbidden Forest and finds him a mate; after the descendants endanger students, Hagrid warns him to keep them under control 122 123.
- Professor Kettleburn — Hagrid takes over his Care of Magical Creatures classes temporarily while Kettleburn recovers from drinking troll liquor 162.
- Filius Flitwick and Minerva McGonagall — Provide Hagrid with supplementary magical instruction during the summer after his charges are dropped. McGonagall also reprimands him over Norbert’s unauthorized presence and Zhang Xiao’s dragon ride 129 255.
- Gilderoy Lockhart — Hagrid resents his unsolicited advice and dismisses his boasts as untrustworthy, hiding Norbert while Lockhart visits 122.
- Lucius Malfoy — An antagonistic visitor who insults Hagrid’s home and brings Dumbledore’s dismissal order. Hagrid accuses him of pressuring the governors and angrily defends Dumbledore against his comparison with Voldemort 179 180.
- Cornelius Fudge — Attempts to take Hagrid away because of his old record and the renewed Hogwarts attacks. Dumbledore eventually permits routine questioning only under explicit safeguards for Hagrid’s rights 179 180.
- Madame Maxime — Hagrid’s romantic interest during the visiting schools’ stay. With the students’ fashion advice and lines written by Zhang Xiao, he secures her acceptance of his invitation to the Yule Ball. Their courtship subsequently progresses rapidly 378 386 409 421.
- Happy — A highly trained house-elf hired through the House-elf Domestic Services Company. Happy organizes Hagrid’s hut and maintains his hair, beard, and more polished appearance 452.
- Petunia Dursley and Dudley Dursley — Petunia remembers Hagrid collecting Harry from the lighthouse and giving Dudley a pig’s tail. Years later, Hagrid helps recreate a first-year Hogwarts arrival for her and the Grangers 458.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Vegetable Patch and Chinese Cooking
Hagrid grants Zhang Xiao permission to cultivate unused ground near his cabin, outside the Forbidden Forest, and later volunteers to help maintain it 22 23 29.
When the bok choy ripens, Hagrid supplies wild-boar meat for a shared stew. He enjoys the dish enough to ask Zhang Xiao to teach him how to make it. After Chinese food gains popularity at Hogwarts, the garden expands with house-elf help, and Hagrid starts raising domestic pigs because their meat is said to taste better 39 43.
His enthusiasm for Chinese food continues at the Christmas feast, where he eats an entire basin of stewed pork with Chinese cabbage 63.
Philosopher’s Stone Investigation
During the children’s investigation, Hagrid confirms that Fluffy belongs to him and that Snape helps guard the secret object. His accidental mention of Nicolas Flamel supplies a crucial lead, which Zhang Xiao connects to the Philosopher’s Stone 39.
Forbidden Forest Detention
Hagrid supervises Zhang Xiao, Malfoy, Harry, Ron, and Neville as they investigate attacks on unicorns. He divides them into two parties: Zhang Xiao and Malfoy accompany him, while Harry, Ron, and Neville go with Fang 46 47.
His party encounters an armored troll roughly two meters taller than him. Hagrid engages it at close quarters, keeping it occupied while Zhang Xiao heads toward the other group’s distress signal. His own fight remains unresolved when Dumbledore subsequently asks Fawkes to help him 47 48 50.
Norbert and the Dragon-Keeping Permit
Harry, Ron, and Hermione initially keep Hagrid’s dragon egg secret at his request. When Zhang Xiao learns about it, he reassures them that honoring Hagrid’s confidence was not wrong, and the children hurry to his hut after receiving word that the egg is hatching 75 76.
The Norwegian Ridgeback hatches in front of them, and Hagrid names it Norbert. Although he admits that he cannot keep the dragon forever, he cannot bear to abandon it. Zhang Xiao offers a Spirit Beast Collar that can control a Fantastic Beast’s size, explaining that it is the Christmas gift he had originally intended for Hagrid 76.
Norbert remains in Hagrid’s care. During Lockhart’s visit, Hagrid hides him in a wooden box supplied with snacks; when the children arrive, he brings the dragon out to greet them 122.
After drinking too much and encouraging Zhang Xiao to ride Norbert, Hagrid blames himself for the resulting flight and begs Dumbledore to expel him rather than Zhang Xiao. McGonagall reprimands them for keeping the dragon at Hogwarts, but Dumbledore explains that the Ministry considers the Muggle pilot’s sighting a minor secrecy breach warranting only a warning 129.
Zhang Xiao later delivers a special dragon-keeping permit. Hagrid cries with relief that Norbert no longer needs to be hidden in a cramped crate, while Zhang Xiao measures the dragon for a custom saddle 131.
Aragog’s Descendants and Hagrid’s Apology
Following the students’ encounter with Acromantulas, Hagrid admits that he introduced Aragog and his mate into the Forbidden Forest. He explains his expulsion and the false accusation that Aragog killed a student fifty years earlier, leading Zhang Xiao to conclude that Hagrid was sacrificed as a scapegoat 122.
Although Zhang Xiao insists the incident is behind them, Hagrid sincerely apologizes and reports that he has warned Aragog. The aging Acromantula promises to control his descendants and prevent a recurrence. Hagrid also tells the children that Dumbledore has renegotiated the centaurs’ alliance so that students who accidentally enter the forest must be protected 123.
Care of Magical Creatures Appointment
Professor Kettleburn’s hospitalization after drinking dangerously prepared troll liquor leaves a teaching vacancy. Dumbledore asks Hagrid to take over temporarily and promises a formal appointment after a term of practice. Hagrid is overwhelmed by the prospect of becoming a Hogwarts professor, and Zhang Xiao helps him develop lessons centered on Norbert and popular creatures 162.
By the following school year, older students speak favorably of Hagrid’s interesting classes. His first third-year lesson introduces an Augurey rather than the Hippogriff Zhang Xiao expects. Hagrid demonstrates his renewed spellcasting ability, explains the bird through stories, and briefly removes its Silencing Charm. Seamus’s subsequent explosion frightens the bird so badly that Hagrid dismisses the class early 255.
The Augurey’s continued refusal to sing leaves him dejected, and several later lessons focus on Flobberworms 281. His teaching eventually includes unicorns and trained nifflers, with the latter used in a competition to recover buried coins 452.
Renewed Chamber of Secrets Investigation
As the renewed attacks place the Ministry under pressure, Fudge arrives at Hagrid’s hut and argues that Hagrid’s previous record justifies taking him away. Dumbledore initially refuses to permit the removal of one of his professors. Lucius Malfoy then arrives with an order dismissing Dumbledore, signed by all twelve governors, and Hagrid angrily challenges him 179.
When Fudge orders the Aurors to take Hagrid, Dumbledore blocks them and unleashes an overwhelming display of power. Hagrid fiercely defends him when Lucius compares his resistance to Voldemort’s actions 179 180.
Dumbledore ultimately allows Hagrid to undergo routine questioning but expressly forbids sending him to Azkaban. Acting as Hagrid’s advocate, he insists on a comfortable private room, rest, meals, and all the rights due to someone being questioned 180. By the following school year, all charges against Hagrid have been dropped, enabling him to commission a new wand and pursue supplementary lessons 255.
Hippogriff Incident and Pure-Blood Pressure
An extremist Slytherin deliberately provokes a Hippogriff, exaggerates the resulting minor injury, and claims that a bloody wound on his arm was inflicted by the creature. He demands that Hagrid be held responsible, and the Ministry sends a high-level investigation team 289.
Hagrid worries that the creature will be executed after an official tells him that any Fantastic Beast that injures someone must be put to death. Zhang Xiao explains that extremist pure-bloods are targeting Hagrid to pressure him over the suspension of East-West trade and has already passed their warning letter to Dumbledore. The discussion helps prompt Zhang Xiao’s plan to bypass the pure-blood middlemen through direct trade in Hong Kong 289.
Madame Maxime and the Tournament
During the visiting schools’ stay, Hagrid asks the children for help approaching Madame Maxime. His initial attempt at formal clothing and hair styling is unsuccessful, so Malfoy devises a makeover plan that Hagrid gratefully accepts. Toto later gives him a complete makeover 378 386.
At the same time, Hagrid hints that the first tournament task may involve dragons, alarming the young champions 386.
Madame Maxime accepts his Yule Ball invitation after he uses lines written by Zhang Xiao. He proudly shows the students his enormous dress robes, and their romance later develops more quickly than Zhang Xiao expected 409 421.
Hagrid also assists the champions with the golden eggs. When an egg cracks open at his hut, he anxiously watches with them. He identifies the dragon faced by Harry’s group and recalls the volcanic incubation conditions for Hebridean Black Dragon eggs, supplying information needed to understand how their tournament eggs should be opened 422.
Household Improvement
Following Zhang Xiao’s advice, Hagrid hires Happy, a top-tier house-elf trained for domestic service in a great household. Although initially surprised to be assigned a small hut rather than an extensive estate, Happy immediately sets to work 452.
Happy makes the hut exceptionally neat and transforms Hagrid’s grooming. Combined with his well-received unicorn lessons, Hagrid’s tidier appearance noticeably increases his popularity among the students 452.
Recreated First-Year Welcome
Hagrid helps Zhang Xiao and Harry recreate the Hogwarts arrival experience for Petunia and Hermione’s parents. Returning to his old coat and tangled beard, he calls them over as “first years” after their appearances are altered by Age-Reducing Potion 458.
He raises his lantern, leads them down the familiar narrow path, and ushers them into the boats for the lake crossing. Hagrid shares a boat with Harry and Petunia as they proceed toward the special welcome and Sorting arranged at the castle 458.
