Power Progression
- No formal Daoist cultivation realms: The Daoist Order measures strength through combat and practical accomplishments rather than named levels. Zhang Xiao’s documented progress consists of spell mastery, meditation benchmarks, and combat breakthroughs 6.
- Personal classification systems: He later devises six descriptive levels of spell power and a separate hierarchy of spellcasting proficiency. These are his provisional analytical models, not official Daoist realms or reliable rankings of combat strength 123 146.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Foundational Daoist training | 5 | Begins meditation and basic Daoist instruction under his father, establishing a daily practice routine. |
| First successful wizarding spells | 6 | Casts Lumos and other simple spells with his custom wand. His newly learned Scourgify works incompletely; attempts at more advanced spells produce poor results. |
| Practical Levitation Charm | 7 | Uses Wingardium Leviosa to lift Harry’s heavy trunk into the Hogwarts Express luggage rack. |
| Instinctive nonverbal lightning | 15 | Strikes Daphne with a blue lightning bolt without an incantation; his wand and magic respond directly to his will. |
| First complete Transfiguration | 19 | Combines meditative calm with a detailed image of the intended result to turn a match into a flawless needle, earning ten house points. |
| Basic remote communication | 23 | Uses the Fingertip Circular Light Technique with a Far-Seeing Mirror. His cultivation supports voice transmission but almost no picture. |
| Four-character meditation benchmark | 24 | Lights four of the meditation test diagram’s eight characters. Deeper practice improves his concentration and ability to calm himself. |
| Thirty-six consecutive spells | 31 | Records thirty-six uninterrupted casts as his current limit. His training chart shows sudden increases in magical capacity, which he suspects are linked to Daoist meditation. |
| Meditation-like combat state | 33 | Enters an unusually calm, analytical state during the Slytherin fight, distinguishing threatening spells and manipulating nearby objects without incantations. |
| Golden Light Spell instruction | 44 45 | Receives instruction through his father’s recorded memory and makes the defensive spell his highest training priority. Also begins practicing Thunder Talisman drawing. |
| Golden Light Spell in combat | 49 | Uses its physical enhancement to perform acrobatic attacks against the troll. The spell consumes stamina at twice the normal rate, leaving him exhausted. |
| Weapon-integrated spellcasting | 92 | Casts Stupefy from the tip of a spear formed around his wand, combining a melee weapon’s reach with ranged magic. |
| Repeatable Sky-Drawing Talisman | 100 | After an earlier Thunder Talisman feat he cannot immediately reproduce, successfully uses Sky-Drawing Talisman while sparring and lands his first hit through his father’s protective Golden Light. |
| Sustained enchanted melee combat | 111 | Fights an Acromantula swarm with Golden Light enhancement, a silver spear, and a Tang Hengdao whose blade he ignites with Incendio. |
| Quantified spell-power experiments | 123 | Rates his nonverbal Disarming Charm as “weak” and verbal casting between “normal” and “strong.” A forceful Chinese command produces a stronger result, supporting his hypothesis that familiar language conveys intent more directly. |
| Instant talismans and unlearned immortal arts | 135 | His parents discuss his use of the Void-Clarity Mirror to cast an Instant Talisman with his wand, as well as inexplicable instant Wind-Summoning and Rain-Summoning despite never having learned those arts. |
| Early understanding of spelllessness | 146 | Describes himself as a “quasi-magic god” in his own proficiency model. Flitwick recognizes that he has begun grasping spelllessness, but Zhang chooses orthodox study as an anchor rather than treating insight as equivalent to combat supremacy. |
| Dueling instruction and controlled nonverbal casting | 153 | Silently disarms Cedric during a demonstration duel and agrees to teach nonverbal spells, the Shield Charm, and the Stunning Spell to his club. |
| Spell power approaching “strong” | 161 | Reports rapid improvement from “normal,” level 3, toward “strong,” level 4, while becoming better able to follow other students’ reasoning in Charms Club. |
| Golden Light bottleneck | 177 | Encounters a training plateau and considers physical conditioning as a way to break through it. |
| Full Release | 187 | Combines Cognition Release and Golden Light Protection in his strongest state, releasing intense golden light and remaining airborne after letting go of his broom. |
| Lifelike corporeal Patronus | 206 256 | Produces an exceptionally lifelike Patronus, later shown as a silver carp. His approach draws on Glove Lady’s imagery of beauty, hope, happiness, and painting. |
| Golden Light contact with Dementors | 209 | Uses Golden Light alongside a protective application of the Patronus Charm, then physically strikes and injures a Dementor, astonishing Dumbledore and the prison warden. |
| Advanced clear-minded state and Void Talisman Formation | 287 | His understanding of spelllessness exceeds that of an ordinary seventh-year. Forms multiple bodily enhancement and protection talismans smoothly in the clear-minded state and combines spells, talismans, and Golden Light to lift and swing a multi-ton block of ice. |
| Condensed Golden Light | 314 315 | Contracts the golden light to just above his skin and reaches speeds ordinary Death Eaters struggle to target. Leaving the heightened state brings severe exhaustion. |
| Golden Light survives magical nullification | 328 | His Golden Light activates after Gringotts’ Thief’s Downfall strips away ordinary magic. |
| Auror-level assessment | 368 | Moody assesses him as “no worse than an ordinary Auror,” increasing the attention paid to his strength. |
| Perfectly clear Clear Insight and extraordinary Stunning Spell | 405 | Reports that Golden Light’s Clear Insight has reached perfect clarity. Glove Lady judges his blazing-white Stunning Spell on Sky Island to exceed ancient magic in power. |
| Water Immortal Walk | 427 | Quickly learns its basics with Golden Light assistance. Finds Flying Fish Thrust too exhausting for routine travel. |
| Brief “magic god” output | 436 | Fully activating his combined abilities briefly grants extraordinary power, earning the nickname “Five-Second Dumbledore.” The state consumes almost all remaining stamina and energy and remains a desperate last resort. |
| Mature thought-driven casting | 517 | Dumbledore describes his current magic as responding to thoughts and will rather than rigid incantations. Ordinary casting remains limited by stamina; an experience connected to the “future” described by Glove Lady has somehow allowed him to overcome that limitation. |
| Celestial Master succession | 539 | Receives the Celestial Master’s mantle from the Old Celestial Master. This is an institutional and spiritual succession, not a named cultivation realm. |
Background / History
Zhang Xiao was thirty in his previous life and had been married and become a father. He died after placing himself between kindergarten children and a criminal firing a modified nail gun. Reborn in Britain in 1980, he retained memories of that life, though his awareness was unclear during infancy 1 7.
Raised by Zhang Chengdao and Li Qingshu, he received a Chinese education at home while attending a British primary school. His family lived in Britain without legal residency and refused to change nationality. After facing racist bullying, he used his greater mental age and previous sanda experience to fight back, eventually defeating every school bully who challenged him 1 2 14.
On his primary-school graduation day, he overheard Death Eaters Jason and Wilbur discussing a female ghost and plans to threaten the Ministry of Magic. Jason’s Killing Curse made him recognize the world of Harry Potter. Zhang Xiao shot Jason with a revolver, while his father’s jade pendant blocked another spell. His subsequent Hogwarts acceptance letter prompted his parents to reveal their Dragon-Tiger Mountain origins and explain that his opportunity lay in the West 1 2.
His upbringing and training were more deliberately arranged than he initially understood. The Celestial Masters had planned his path, including prohibiting Daoist cultivation before eleven and initially restricting his instruction to talismans and the Golden Light Spell. The latter is a foundational cultivation method that cultivates both nature and life, rather than merely an incantation 101.
He initially believed he had shown no childhood magic because he had never recognized the existence of a magical world and had remained unusually calm. His later theory connects magical manifestation to cognition and strong emotional stimuli. The account of his graduation-day encounter also identifies heightened emotion as the cause of several instantaneous spells 101 131.
Following the deaths of his parents and most of Dragon-Tiger Mountain’s disciples, he learns that the Old Celestial Master had long known about his past-life memories. The Old Celestial Master acknowledges that some of Zhang Xiao’s spontaneous powers remain unexplained and says that he and Zhang Xiao’s parents had supported him out of guilt. Zhang Xiao subsequently inherits the Celestial Master’s mantle while the Old Celestial Master and Dumbledore sacrifice themselves to stabilize the Heavenly Court and Magic Network 539.
Appearance
Zhang Xiao is described as handsome and tall, with dark brown eyes and mid-length black hair. His looks attract attention from girls both before and after he enters Hogwarts 1 13 15 31.
- School clothing: Black Slytherin robes, worn over a white shirt during training 31.
- Distinctive wand: Light-brown wood marked with lightning-like patterns and a creamy-white jade grip 6.
- Lightning effect: During his confrontation with Daphne, electrical currents lift his hair while blue arcs flicker around his wand 15.
- Casual clothing: Favors T-shirts, jeans, and sneakers, consistent with his previous-life tastes 260.
- Full Release appearance: His black hair rises against gravity while the golden light around him ripples like a raging fire 187.
- Later Golden Light appearance: Can condense the radiance to a thin layer just above his skin rather than maintaining a conspicuous surrounding glow 314.
- At Mount Olympus: Radiance spreads from him in rings through the mist, giving him an ethereal appearance likened to an immortal 522.
Personality
Zhang Xiao believes strength is more valuable when used to protect people than to harm them. He intervenes against bullying at both primary school and Hogwarts, but readily uses violence when persuasion fails. His ban on Slytherin bullying covers verbal abuse as well as physical mistreatment 1 14 16 32.
An enthusiastic and analytical student, he enjoys even History of Magic and repeatedly questions the principles behind spells. Successfully producing a result does not satisfy him unless he understands why it works. His persistent questions earn him the nickname “Mr. Why,” while his competitive academic standing makes Hermione regard him as a rival 14 19 20 24.
Despite his adult memories, he becomes openly excited about attending Hogwarts and learning Daoist arts. He uses jokes, comics, and shared food to put other children at ease. With friends, he respects personal boundaries: he does not press Draco about a distressing letter and later accepts his conflicted behavior without demanding an apology 2 3 8 29 38.
He increasingly distinguishes bold experimentation from reckless advancement. Flitwick’s advice persuades him to abandon an attempt to force his growth, and he later decides to learn new magic through orthodox methods before adapting it to spelllessness. He also rejects the equation of recklessness with courage, defining true courage as commitment to one’s principles rather than casually throwing away one’s life 53 54 81 146 175.
His family’s influence does not make him habitually imperious. Hogwarts professors contrast his everyday humility with the ostentatious lineage-conscious behavior of extremist pure-bloods. Nevertheless, he recognizes that he lacks the political instincts of someone raised within a great family and accepts his father’s explanations as an ongoing education in that role 62 374.
His protective instincts retain a distinctly parental dimension. During Lupin’s Boggart lesson, his fear appears as an imagined future daughter defending a scruffy, reckless boyfriend, provoking an immediate Golden Light response 274.
The loss of his parents, fellow Daoists, and teachers leaves him profoundly bereaved. He returns to a Dragon-Tiger Mountain populated largely by stunned young survivors and accepts leadership while facing the isolation of protecting a world from which his familiar companions have died or been placed into deep sleep 539.
Abilities & Skills
Wizarding Magic
- Charms: Receives repeated praise from Flitwick for his concentration and aptitude; the professor considers him suited to Ravenclaw 24.
- Transfiguration: Produces a perfect needle in his first practical lesson by focusing on the finished object rather than the transformation process. McGonagall recognizes his exceptional talent and supplies a reading list 19.
- Combat spells: Prioritizes Protego and Stupefy, while also practicing Impedimenta and Expelliarmus. Successfully blocks Daphne’s Dark spell and stuns her 31 32.
- Nonverbal magic: Disarms Pansy without announcing his attack and moves a rug and vase during the common-room battle. He does not initially understand the state enabling these actions. Later silently disarms Cedric in a controlled duel and agrees to teach the technique 33 153.
- Potions: Independently brews the Cure for Boils Potion and recognizes the importance of precise preparation 21.
- Early limits: His initial advanced-spell experiments are unsuccessful, and his direct spells fail to injure the Forbidden Forest troll. These are early limitations rather than descriptions of his later combat power 6 48.
- Patronus Charm: Produces an exceptionally lifelike corporeal Patronus with the form of a silver carp. Dumbledore also teaches him a protective use of the charm during the journey to Azkaban 206 209 256.
- Shield techniques: Uses his wand like a sword to produce an illusory shield that rebounds a Stone Dragon’s descending claw. His later dueling incorporates wand movements derived from swordsmanship 142 153.
- Additional combat magic: Uses the Freezing Charm to solidify a mire during his confrontation with Dumbledore, and employs Petrification, Diffindo, and Bombarda in an underwater barrage 287 435.
- Practical utility magic: Uses Geminio to copy Hermione’s notes, alters his clothing by Transfiguration, and employs the Disillusionment Charm for concealment 170 491.
- Self-transformation: Temporarily transforms into a bird to bypass a military front line, then returns to human form in midair. The passage does not identify this as a registered Animagus transformation 491.
- Spell-creation studies: Receives Snape’s manuscript and instruction concerning the process. He acknowledges that his theoretical grounding is insufficient and initially seeks understanding rather than immediately attempting to create spells 211.
Daoist Meditation
- Mental control: Helps him enter a calm state quickly and sustain intense concentration during lessons 19 24.
- Training assessment: Uses an eight-character diagram whose characters illuminate as he maintains meditation; four is his documented early benchmark 24.
- Possible magical growth: Notices that increases in spellcasting capacity occur in steps rather than a smooth curve and suspects meditation is responsible 31.
- Training costs: Intensive practice exhausts both mind and body, requiring rest and restorative pills 31 32.
- Clear-minded state: Later supports smooth, rapid Void Talisman Formation and enhanced combat perception. Physical development and sustained training increase the time he can maintain it, though heightened states still cause exhaustion 287 315.
- Battlefield awareness: By emptying his mind and carefully listening, constructs a hazy mental picture of a battlefield and detects a tightening encirclement 491.
Golden Light Spell
- Defensive foundation: His father teaches it as a means of surviving sudden attacks long enough to endure blows or escape 45.
- Cultivation foundation: Despite its translated name, it is a cultivation method rather than simply a spoken spell. It cultivates both nature and life and is central to the path arranged for him by the Celestial Masters 101.
- Physical enhancement: Greatly improves the user’s abilities; Zhang Xiao uses it while climbing and vaulting over the troll 49.
- Stamina cost: His early combat use consumes stamina at twice the normal rate. Later full activation of his combined abilities can expend nearly all remaining stamina and energy in a brief burst 49 436.
- Environmental limits: Does not protect against cold or wind 24.
- Training bottleneck: Reaches a plateau that leads him to consider exercise and physical conditioning as supplementary training 177.
- Dementor interaction: Allows him to physically strike and wound a Dementor, something Dumbledore and the Azkaban warden do not expect 209.
- Condensation and passive defense: Can contract the golden light close to his skin. Later, a weak spell triggers only a faint localized shimmer, without requiring full activation 314 477.
- Resistance to magical nullification: Remains functional after the Thief’s Downfall removes ordinary magic in Gringotts 328.
- Clear Insight: Reaches a state of perfect clarity. Together with his jade pendant, it prevents dark magic from distorting his mind 405.
- Underwater defense: Withstands Cedric’s underwater Disarming Charm during testing. Zhang estimates that the submerged spell has approximately fifty to sixty percent of its normal power 425.
- Against risen corpses: Uses golden-light-enhanced blows to slap three animated corpses back into their coffins during the Wang family investigation 469.
Talismans and Remote Communication
- Tracking Talisman: Secretly places one on Scabbers aboard the Hogwarts Express 8.
- Fire and Thunder Talismans: Attaches more than twenty Fire Talismans and two Thunder Talismans to the troll. The thunder attacks near its ears inflict more effective damage than the flames, but do not finish it 49.
- Talisman creation: Initially practices drawing while visualizing thunder and lightning, but struggles to divide his attention. The process requires specially prepared paper, ink, and a spirit-beast-hair brush 45.
- Fingertip Circular Light Technique: Activates his Far-Seeing Mirror to contact his parents; his early attempts carry sound without a usable image 23.
- Sky-Drawing Talisman: Progresses from an interest in drawing talismans without conventional materials to successful combat use, striking his father through Golden Light during a summer sparring match 45 100.
- Instant Talisman: Uses the Void-Clarity Mirror’s assistance to cast a talisman in midair with his wand 135.
- Void Talisman Formation: Later forms Lightness, Mighty Strength, Hardened Body, Water Repulsion, and Fire Warding talismans directly, applying them to his body in the clear-minded state 287.
- Fantasy Thunder Talisman: Instantly forms one in midair during the tournament; the resulting thunder disrupts surrounding opponents long enough for him to escape their encirclement 396.
- Mass disruption: Uses a projected talisman and thunderclap to knock down soldiers maintaining suppressive fire 491.
Spelllessness and Magical Theory
Zhang Xiao increasingly understands magic as a mind-driven system in which cognition, emotion, desire, and will shape reality. His investigation is not a smooth ascent through recognized ranks: he develops unusual insights before acquiring the theoretical foundations normally taught to older students 75 131 146 287.
- Correction of inherited assumptions: Realizes that his belief in a distinct store of “magical energy” was influenced by fanfiction rather than a clear memory of the original novels. He revisits his assumptions instead of treating prior knowledge as infallible 75.
- Spell-impact research: Conducts approximately one hundred offensive-spell tests, recording irregular radiating impact patterns and investigating whether physical armor can intercept their spread 63.
- Personal power scale: Uses “very weak,” “weak,” “normal,” “strong,” “extremely strong,” and “beyond imagination” as levels 1–6 for his experiments. These labels assess individual spell output rather than formal cultivation 123.
- Language and intent: Finds that louder pronunciation alone produces only a small improvement, whereas an emotionally forceful Chinese command meaning “Hand it over!” strengthens his Disarming Charm substantially. He treats greater native-language intuitiveness as a hypothesis requiring further testing 123.
- Provisional proficiency hierarchy: Calls his unconventional early understanding “quasi-magic god” proficiency, while explicitly separating that concept from fighting strength. He does not claim that this insight makes him stronger than established masters 146 170.
- Mind Palace: Organizes magical understanding within a mental cottage containing books and a cabinet. The Book of Cognition participates in Cognition Release; later, the black Spelllessness book and white Wordless Book represent aspects of his accumulated understanding 170 187 301.
- Advanced comprehension: By his third year, his understanding of magic, especially spelllessness, has surpassed that of an ordinary seventh-year, aided by intensive study and the Mind Palace 287.
- Wand theory: Understands the wand as an external filter and amplifier that reduces the concentration required for a spell. Compatibility determines how effectively it assists its wielder 348.
- Dark-magic analysis: Studies how extreme negative emotion produces powerful concentration while progressively corroding the practitioner’s mind and soul. His own Golden Light clarity and pendant prevent that corrosion, but do not make the danger irrelevant for others 301 405.
- Thought-driven casting: Eventually reaches a state in which magic responds naturally to his thoughts and will. Dumbledore identifies stamina as the ordinary remaining limitation 517.
- Unexplained manifestations: His instant Wind-Summoning and Rain-Summoning, and spells spontaneously produced while drunk to help Norbert catch a plane, remain beyond his family’s explanations 135 539.
Full Release and Combined Combat States
- Cognition Release: Calls upon the Book of Cognition to enter an intensified state. Abruptly forcing the standardized spell system and spelllessness system together causes severe mental strain 187.
- Golden Light Protection: Layers powerful Golden Light over Cognition Release, producing Full Release and allowing him to remain suspended in the air without his broom 187.
- Extraordinary spell output: His fully empowered Stunning Spell becomes blazing white rather than scarlet; Glove Lady describes the recorded attack as surpassing ancient magic 405.
- “Five-Second Dumbledore”: His complete activation briefly approaches what he calls a magic god’s output. The tremendous drain means that failure to eliminate the opponent can leave him unable to survive the counterattack 436.
- Strongest combat form: He identifies the combination of Golden Light and Western spellcasting, rather than ordinary spell exchanges alone, as his greatest strength 478.
Dharma Eye and Other Daoist Arts
- Spiritual perception: Uses his Dharma Eye while observing Dementors, communicating with ginseng dolls, identifying black monster energy around corpses, and detecting a magically concealed palace beyond ordinary magical detection 210 453 469 522.
- Fragrance-Tracking Technique: Pursues Harry after the circus abduction by following his scent 304.
- Water Imp Six Arts: Receives their methods and annotations from his father. Quickly grasps the basics of Water Immortal Walk with Golden Light assistance, regards River-Turning Palm as less useful than his spells, and finds Flying Fish Thrust too tiring for routine movement 427.
- Underwater coordination: His Dragon Carp responds to his intent while he maneuvers and fires repeated spells at an armed underwater statue 435.
Physical Combat and Tactics
- Sanda experience: Draws on martial-arts practice from his previous life 1.
- Improvised fighting: Defeats multiple primary-school opponents with a mop, separating them and attacking individually 1.
- Spell evasion: Identifies misses within a barrage of jinxes and dodges attacks while countering with nearby objects 33.
- Team coordination: Organizes alternating distractions against the troll and, once exhausted, urges Ron to use Wingardium Leviosa on its club 48 49.
- Armed combat: Trains with his father and combines spear or sword movements with wizarding spells. Uses a spear and flaming Tang Hengdao against an Acromantula swarm 92 111 153.
- Combined strength: Uses the Mighty Strength Talisman, Golden Light, and Levitation Charm together to wrench a multi-ton block of ice from the ground and swing it as a weapon 287.
- High-speed assault: Golden Light and talisman reinforcement make him too fast for many Death Eaters to track accurately 314.
- Limits against barrages: Even with superhuman perception, he must dodge concentrated spellfire. Poorly aimed, erratic attacks can be harder to predict from the position of the enemy’s wand 313 315.
- One-against-many training: Dueling Club practice helps him manage encirclement during the tournament 396.
- Experience gap: Recognizes that veteran Aurors possess far more accumulated combat experience than he does, even though his combined Eastern and Western abilities provide exceptional power 478.
- Anti-wizard threat assessment: Identifies Demon Hunters’ enhanced physiques, spell-blocking equipment, close-combat skills, and coordination with firearms as a systematic counter to ordinary wizards 491.
Academic and Culinary Skills
- Memory and mathematics: Has an excellent memory and previously won first prize in a provincial mathematics competition 5.
- Prior knowledge: Remembers the Harry Potter novels, films, and more than two hundred hours of Hogwarts Legacy, though some details have faded 2.
- Cooking: Prepares wild boar and cabbage stew, then teaches Hogwarts house-elves stir-fried tomatoes and eggs, Fish-Fragrant Shredded Pork, and Kung Pao Chicken 39 41.
- Gardening: Tends a vegetable patch with Hagrid and seeks Sprout’s advice. He finds that artificially accelerated crops taste unpleasant 23 24 29.
- First-year results: Ties with Hermione for first place, with perfect marks in every subject. The two exchange methods for organizing and summarizing their studies 88 103.
- Teaching: Assesses his club members’ spell proficiency, demonstrates combat techniques, and sets shared training goals 153.
- Extended focused study: Uses a school-approved Time-Turner arrangement to work in long, uninterrupted stretches rather than primarily to attend additional classes 272.
- Magical construction: Transforms a room into a private cinema for Glove Lady and teaches her to operate the projector and change reels 256.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Custom wand — Ollivander-made, thirteen inches long, rigid and unyielding; crafted from millennium lightning-struck jujube wood with a Qilin whisker core and jade grip. It favors offensive casting, seems reluctant about protective magic, and frightens Peeves. Its rumored value of over ten thousand Galleons is school gossip, not a confirmed price 5 6 13 31.
- Responds to his summons by flying into his hand amid lightning. It violently shocks a Ministry employee during a scan and later recalls itself during the tournament’s wand inspection 209 348 384.
- Can unleash a concentrated lightning bolt underwater without the electrical arcs dispersing normally 439.
- Dragon-and-tiger jade pendant — Gift from Zhang Chengdao. Produces an eggshell-like protective barrier and can block Legilimency, as Dumbledore confirms 1 37.
- Heaven and Earth Bag — Rare Daoist storage item given by his parents to celebrate starting school; its small exterior conceals enough space for luggage and large objects 4 7 15.
- Far-Seeing Mirror — Packed by his mother for contact with home; activated using the Fingertip Circular Light Technique 18 23.
- Golden Book and Jade Register — Contains a constructed teaching space with an interactive recorded memory of his father; entered after pricking his finger on its jade page 44.
- Compendium of Talismans and drawing supplies — His father’s practical talisman manual, special paper and ink, and a spirit-beast-hair brush 45.
- Restorative pills — Uses stamina-restoring pills and Calm and Focus pills to support intensive training 31 32.
- Silver revolver — Used to shoot Jason during the graduation-day attack 1.
- Dragon Ball comics — Shares them with Harry and Ron and later supplies Draco with new issues 7 8 38.
- Transformable wand casing — A mechanism involving a tourmaline control and cloud-gold sleeve allows a metal casing around his wand to become melee weapons, including a bright silver spear and Tang Hengdao. The enclosed wand remains usable for casting 92 111 287.
- High-cost wizarding chess set — Contains recorded matches that he uses against the enchanted chess challenge. He transforms the friendly pieces into famous actresses and urges them to protect the children while Hermione copies the opposing moves 81.
- Slytherin correspondence — Dumbledore gives him three historical letters that reveal a more compassionate, foresighted, and egalitarian side of Salazar Slytherin. Zhang keeps them in a wooden box 61 62.
- Recording notebook — A black notebook and pen supplied by Little Ma; he enchants them to float and record dictated spell-testing observations 123.
- Void-Clarity Mirror — Its power assists his instantaneous wand-drawn talisman feat 135.
- Silver cube / Flamel’s Rubik’s Cube — A small silver cube he studies through Transfiguration has hidden functions. Nicolas Flamel’s cube later supplies a turbojet Wind-Fire Wheels configuration during his airborne confrontation with Voldemort 175 502.
- Snape’s spell-creation manuscript — Records Snape’s ideas and accompanies his instruction on conviction, method, and the theoretical grounding needed for spell creation 211.
- Time-Turner — Used with school approval to extend focused work. A seven-hour journey into the past prompts McGonagall to warn him about the risks of such prolonged use 256 272.
- Flying sword — A small sword given by his father expands into a large blade that he rides through the air 386.
- Tournament communicator — Used to coordinate underwater spell tests and communicate with fellow champions 425 458.
- Water Imp Six Arts manual — Contains the techniques and annotations supplied by Zhang Chengdao for underwater preparation 427.
- Flying Sash — Emerges from his Heaven and Earth Bag and winds around him during his later aerial confrontation with Voldemort 502.
