The next day.
Bright sunlight shone down on Yang Bo, its warmth making him feel wonderfully comfortable. Even after a night of "work," he had not felt tired, but basking in the warm sun made him want to sleep.
Beside the lake in Central Park, Yang Bo sat on a sofa with a pathetic-looking fishing rod in his hands. It was just over a meter long, with a fishing line tied to it. Never mind catching fish-even for catching frogs, the rod would have been too short.
Yang Bo did not care in the slightest, looking utterly relaxed. Fish could clearly be seen swimming through the clear lake water. A fist-sized float bobbed on the surface, while the equally fist-sized hook beneath it had no bait at all. No fish with an IQ above zero would ever bite that thing.
"Real-world lapis lazuli is so fucking expensive. Over twenty dollars a gram! Who the hell knows how many grams it takes to convert into one piece of lapis lazuli?"
With nothing else to do, Yang Bo had searched for lapis lazuli online, and the staggering price made his teeth ache. It was not that he could not afford it; the gold he had on him would certainly cover the cost.
"If all else fails, I'll just live off fishing!"
Fishing could also yield Enchanted Books. It took some effort, but given enough time, he would eventually fish up the Enchanted Books he wanted.
As he spoke, a ripple suddenly appeared on the calm lake, as though a fish underwater were swimming rapidly toward the float.
Yang Bo's eyes lit up, and he immediately perked up.
"Here it comes!"
As the float sank, Yang Bo gave a hard tug. A fishing rod identical to the one in his hands flew out of the water and into his inventory.
"A fishing rod?"
Yang Bo hurriedly opened his inventory to check. Then his mouth fell open in disbelief, his eyes blazing.
"Holy shit!!"
"Lure III, Luck of the Sea III, Mending. My god-tier rod!!"
"This..."
Yang Bo could not help standing up. Looking at the fishing rod in his hands, he was overwhelmed with emotion. He had obtained this rod countless times in the game, but this was real life!
This fishing rod only needed Unbreaking III to qualify as the strongest fishing rod in the vanilla game.
Out with the old, in with the new. Yang Bo banished his original fishing rod and sat back down on the sofa, continuing to fish with his newly acquired rod and its three enchantments.
The new fishing rod was incredibly effective. Within seconds, another ripple appeared on the water. He pulled hard, and a pair of leather boots flew out of the lake...
Thud...
A dull sound rang out, and Yang Bo's body was sent flying helplessly into the water.
Fuck...
Yang Bo used the momentum to dive underwater, heading straight for the lakebed. He took a wooden door out of his inventory and placed it on the bottom. The powerful force of the rules pushed all the water out of the space occupied by the door.
"Fuck, who was that?"
His face filled with fury, Yang Bo glanced at his health and could not help being stunned. Even with a full set of iron armor, he had lost half his health.
"It had to be a heavy sniper rifle at the very least. Who wants me dead this badly? Could it be the vampires?"
If the vampires really had sent someone, only those fellows who called themselves the Underworld Clan could act in broad daylight. But Yang Bo doubted it was their people. If they truly wanted to use those believers against him, sending the police to his door would have been the best option. There was no need to do this.
That heavy sniper rifle made it clear they wanted his life.
Yang Bo plopped down on the lakebed, not caring about the dark sludge. As he ate bread, he kept turning over everyone he might have offended in his mind.
It was very quiet underwater. Aside from the sound of flowing water, the lake blocked out all other noise. At the spot on the shore where he had just been sitting, Yang Bo could only make out three or four blurry figures through the water. He narrowed his eyes slightly and muttered:
"Today, I'm going to find out who you are! If you're vampires, fine-we're already enemies to the death anyway. But if you're someone else..."
A vicious glint flashed through his eyes. He had already made up his mind: whoever they were, he would make them pay.
Glancing at his health, which had recovered to full, Yang Bo steeled himself and took his phone out of his inventory, switching it to recording mode. While he held it, the phone also entered a digitized state, so he did not need to worry about water damage or it breaking.
He used his axe to pick up the wooden door and swam toward the surface. Before he could reach it, the people on shore had already spotted him.
Without any questions or communication, every one of them swung their guns around and aimed at Yang Bo.
Bang, bang, bang...
A stream of bullets shot toward Yang Bo underwater. He could even see their trails as they entered the lake.
In the blink of an eye, Yang Bo had been hit seven or eight times, and his health was dropping rapidly.
"Looks like these people were ordered to kill me on sight..."
Instead, Yang Bo grew calm. He took out his shield and drank a Healing Potion, rapidly restoring his health.
His head had barely broken the surface, and before he could get a good look, a barrage of bullets poured toward him. Amid the rapid clatter of blocked shots, the shield in his hands lasted only two seconds before being blasted apart.
But those two seconds were more than enough. He had already recorded their faces on his phone.
Then darkness engulfed Yang Bo's vision. Having experienced it several times already, he knew he had died again. A few seconds later, he appeared on the bed in his underground room.
"Whew..."
He exhaled deeply, his gaze ice-cold. Without hesitation, he stood up and walked toward the corner, took the Pickaxe out of his inventory, and continued digging downward.
Standard-issue combat uniforms, automatic rifles across the board...
Although the United States was a very free country, there was no way it was free enough for a private special operations squad to run rampant in a park in broad daylight, especially with something like a heavy sniper rifle.
Yang Bo already had a suspicion. Only government personnel could pull this off. For now, though, he needed to establish another Safe House a hundred meters beneath his home, somewhere only he knew about.
As he dug, the temperature around Yang Bo rose steadily. He looked up to check his depth.
"Right here!"
He began expanding sideways. Before long, he had dug out a small space of over fifty square meters, then lined it entirely with stone bricks.
"Looks like I'll have to go to the Nether to find diamonds. At the very least, I need to make a Diamond Pickaxe first and mine some obsidian to reinforce the defenses!"
He took out a bed, set it on the ground, and set his Respawn Point. Then he placed a chest and put some basic materials inside, ensuring that no matter what happened, he could start over using the items in it.
After quickly building a Nether Portal, Yang Bo passed through it into the Nether. A smile appeared on his face as he surveyed the familiar surroundings.
"It really works. Now to see whether going back through the Portal will take me upstairs..."
He stepped into the Portal again. After the familiar dizzying visuals, he came to his senses and found himself back in his home above.
He jumped straight down the tunnel he had dug, using water to land safely in his secret base. Then he took the blocks he had just mined out of his inventory and filled the entire tunnel back in. This way, even if a nuclear bomb struck, Yang Bo would not have to worry about his Safe House being affected.
"Those guys probably haven't left yet..."
