"Shawarma, oh, shawarma, oh, shawarma..."
Inside a streetside grill in New York.
A girl of about eleven or twelve, dressed in an employee's uniform, stood behind the counter, humming as she rapidly added meat, tossed in fries, squeezed out sauce, rolled up the wrap, and slipped it into a bag.
Her hands moved so fast they practically left afterimages.
"Here you go."
The girl handed over the finished food while her other hand swept expertly across the counter, gathering up all the loose coins.
"Next!"
The girl called out in a fluent British accent.
The next customer rattled off something in Spanish. The girl frowned as she listened, then raised a hand for him to stop.
"Let's speak Chin... English!"
Quite a few people were lined up outside, but the girl churned out orders even faster, drawing passersby to stop and watch.
Everyone saw the girl's unbelievable hand speed, but no one noticed the meat knife floating beneath the counter, the fries jumping into the fryer by themselves, or the flatbreads flying back and forth.
The sun sank toward the horizon.
The girl shook out her hands. After finally seeing off the last batch of customers, she closed her eyes, and a flicker of delight crossed her face.
"Let's check my proficiency with the Confundus Charm and Levitation Charm... They've gone up quite a bit!"
"Hermione!"
Just then, a middle-aged man in a chef's uniform and tall hat walked over to the girl, placed an envelope of cash on the counter, and handed her a bottle of water.
"Thanks for stepping in to help. Here's the pay we agreed on."
The girl put away the envelope and waved at him with a smile.
"Thanks! Bye!"
With the setting sun at her back, the girl skipped away.
That was right. The girl's name was Hermione.
Hermione Granger.
A transmigrator.
What she had been called before transmigrating wasn't important. There were more pressing matters.
"Why did I go from a perfectly good-looking guy to twelve-year-old Hermione?!"
That had been her first anguished cry in front of the mirror after transmigrating.
She had rubbed her cheeks frantically, distorting the face in the mirror-a face identical to young Emma Frost's from her previous life.
Though she had loved the Harry Potter series in her previous life, she had never imagined she would wake up one day as an actual character from it.
"I just liked this character! I didn't want to become her!"
After finally coming to terms with that, she had turned to look for an owl and a Hogwarts acceptance letter, only to discover another problem.
This wasn't London. It was New York.
Seeing a billboard for Stark Industries featuring a photo of Tony Stark had left her utterly stunned.
Even if I'd turned into Hermione, shouldn't I be in the Harry Potter world?
How did I end up in Marvel?!
According to the original Hermione's memories, she had indeed lived in London, Britain, with both parents alive and well. But it had still been the nineties there, and Stark Industries hadn't existed.
Here, however, it was already 2008, and she had no legal identity whatsoever.
After repeatedly sorting through the original Hermione's memories, she had reached only one conclusion.
Right person, wrong world!
Undocumented, twelve years old, penniless, with her parents in another world.
Anyone would have fallen apart on the spot.
Fortunately, besides this face, something else had come along with her-something inside her mind.
Pulling herself out of her thoughts, Hermione turned her attention inward.
An ancient-looking hardcover book appeared, its cover engraved with intricate patterns.
At her command, the book opened, revealing several lines of text and a number of icons.
[Hermione Jean Granger] [Magic level: lv1 (132/1000)]
There were seven categories of icons in all.
[Charms] [Dark magic] [Ancient magic] [Alchemy] [Potions] [Magical creatures] [Curiosities]
She selected the first icon. The book turned its pages automatically, and several lines of text appeared alongside icons.
[Spells:] [Levitation Charm lv1 (453/1000), Mending Charm lv1 (148/1000), Ignition Charm lv1 (65/1000), Confundus Charm lv1 (388/1000)...]
Then came the second icon.
[Dark magic] [Dark Harvest (Talent): harvest souls to gain energy]
The pages for the remaining five categories were completely blank.
This mysterious spellbook was her cheat.
When she had discovered it, Hermione had also gained some knowledge of how to use it.
It could scan spells recorded in books, or directly copy spells used by others and add them to the corresponding categories.
Hermione could instantly learn any magic it recorded.
Once she learned a spell, repeated use increased her proficiency, as well as her own magic power.
Once enough experience accumulated, the spell would level up, enhancing its effects.
Today's long lines at the grill had contributed quite a bit of proficiency to her Levitation Charm and Confundus Charm.
Ancient magic, alchemy, and potions could also be recorded and learned through the spellbook.
As for the final two categories, magical creatures and curiosities, she was still completely in the dark.
She had sacrificed her little brother in exchange for this book.
For the moment, she honestly wasn't sure how to rate her transmigration package.
Still, whether it was Marvel or HP, in a world with supernatural powers, power was ultimately what did the talking.
Especially in Marvel.
Ordinary people's lives looked no different from those in her previous life, but in reality, superpowered individuals, aliens, and dimensional invasions were practically everywhere.
Hermione glanced at her magic level again.
lv1.
Today, she had managed to make shawarma all day using magic, but if she actually ran into those dangers, there was no telling whether these few basic spells would be enough.
"There are still too few spells I can get my hands on. I can't access the other categories at all, let alone fill out the collection. And..."
Hermione's gaze returned to the only lit icon under [Dark magic].
[Dark Harvest]
"Harvest souls to gain energy... That doesn't exactly sound wholesome..."
She stared at the description for a while, but the page displayed no further information.
What kind of souls did it harvest? And what could she use the energy for?
Those few words alone weren't enough to tell.
"I'll have to find a chance to figure this out. As for new spells, I'll still have to go back and look..."
Hermione counted the days. The start of term over there should be approaching too.
Rather than stay in New York, working part-time and practicing basic spells, she would have far more magic waiting for her to learn over there.
"It's time to go back."
She directed the spellbook to turn to its final page.
Two symbols appeared on the page: an infinity symbol and a castle.
The infinity symbol was gray, while the castle was in color.
Hermione selected the castle.
The next second, her vision abruptly twisted, and she squeezed her eyes shut.
Once the dizziness passed, Hermione opened her eyes again. She was back in that familiar room.
An owl perched on the windowsill, its head tilted as it stared straight at her.
The corners of Hermione's mouth lifted.
What if you transmigrated into the wrong world?
No worries. Just transmigrate back!
