It was an enormous flying creature, covered in thick armor and shaped like a whale, with scores of Chitauri soldiers riding along its sides.
"What the hell is that thing?"
Tony stared at the beast and couldn't help swearing.
"I think that's the Leviathan Hermione mentioned."
Steve's expression was grim.
"Give us our orders, Captain," Tony said seriously.
At that moment, they had put aside their prejudices against one another and become a team.
Steve nodded. "Until we close the portal, we need to keep the situation under control."
"Barton, get up on a rooftop. Watch the battlefield and report enemy movements."
"Stark, hold the perimeter. Don't let these monsters get beyond three blocks. Anything that crosses that line, either drive it back or turn it to ash."
"Thor, summon lightning. Find a way to block the portal."
"And Hulk!"
Hulk snapped his gaze toward Steve.
Steve took a deep breath. "Smash!"
Hulk flashed a wicked grin and leaped into the air.
With their assignments handed out, the Avengers sprang into action.
Steve and Natasha stayed on the ground to clear out the enemy.
Thor flew to the top of a skyscraper and raised Mjolnir.
"Mjolnir!"

A thick bolt of lightning descended from the sky and struck the portal.
Countless Chitauri soldiers were hit by the lightning, plummeting from the sky with screams.
Hulk had spotted the Leviathan too.
With a furious roar, he pushed off hard with both legs and shot toward it like a cannonball.
At first, they had been full of confidence. Having set aside their old grievances, they believed that together, they could surely hold off the Chitauri.
But as time wore on, the Avengers finally realized they were wrong.
