On weekends when he was not working part-time, Peter would hang out with Ned. But something had come up with Ned's family today, and Peter only learned their plans were canceled after he had already left home.

Under the librarian's warning gaze, Peter hung up and took the elevator to the fifth floor.
The New York Library was open to the public. Even if visitors did not buy any books, no one minded them sitting there all day as long as they stayed out of trouble, so Peter liked coming here to read and pass the time when he had nothing else to do.
The elevator doors opened, and he stepped out to find rows of clean, tidy bookshelves. Beyond them were plenty of tables and chairs, where people could read and take notes.
There were fewer than ten people in the reading area. That might have been because most books on the fifth floor covered mathematics, physics, and chemistry, with the majority dealing with rather advanced academic theories. Understanding them required a very solid foundation of
