Background / History

Captivity and escape

Two months before his introduction, Tony was kidnapped while returning from a weapons demonstration. Shrapnel pierced his chest, and fellow captive Ho Yinsen helped him build an Arc Reactor that kept him alive. Forced to manufacture bombs in a terrorist cave, the two secretly diverted materials into constructing mechanical armor 4.

Their escape plans changed when they discovered Paimon hiding in a supply crate. After hearing that she was searching for the Traveler, Aether, they connected her story to a gravely injured prisoner recently brought into the base. Tony recognized the fragmentation bomb responsible for the Traveler’s injuries as a Stark Industries weapon and decided to accelerate the armor’s completion 5.

When the completed armor took too long to start, Yinsen ran into the passages to draw the guards away. Lin Ze rescued him and reunited the group. Tony then led their escape, shielding his companions from gunfire while Lin Ze eliminated attackers with Anemo abilities 7 8.

At the cave entrance, Tony killed Omar with an armor-mounted weapon rather than accept his offer to reveal the person behind the kidnapping. Tony’s flamethrowers and Lin Ze’s wind attacks set the base ablaze. The armor carried all four fugitives into the air, but its thrusters failed under the load; Lin Ze’s Wind Glider could not prevent their crash into the desert 9.

Meeting Qiqi

After Lin Ze and Paimon departed through a Stone Gate that Tony could neither see nor interact with, Tony and Yinsen continued across the desert. During a freezing night, Yinsen confessed that Omar’s men had killed his wife and children. Tony offered him a future as his assistant at Stark Industries, trying to restore his will to survive 10 11.

The pair encountered Qiqi, an icy-cold girl who introduced herself as a zombie. Her supernatural treatment saved Yinsen and relieved Tony’s exhaustion. She also supplied Coconut Milk when they lacked drinking water. When Colonel James Rhodes finally found them, Tony introduced Qiqi as his daughter and helped prevent her from announcing that she was a zombie 12 13.

Medical equipment at the military base detected no heartbeat, pulse, or body temperature in Qiqi. Tony told Rhodes that she had saved their lives and insisted that the military must not take her for research. He promised to search for her relatives and become her family if none could be found 14.

Return to New York

Back in New York, Tony initially refused hospital treatment despite Potts and Yinsen’s concerns. He changed his mind after asking Qiqi to decide. The examination identified problems with the exterior material of his reactor, which would require Tony to build a replacement himself 15 16.

At his return press conference, Tony announced the immediate closure of his company’s weapons manufacturing division. The decision followed serious reflection rather than a sudden impulse, but it enraged Obadiah 16.

Tony prepared a pink Princess Room for Qiqi in Stark Tower and told her they were family. At her request, he had JARVIS record his promise to remain with her forever. While developing improved armor, he kept her in his workshop and made time to play with her every day 17 18.

Obadiah’s betrayal

Obadiah stole Tony’s reactor, leaving him paralyzed and close to death. Qiqi’s Cryo healing temporarily stabilized him, allowing Lin Ze, acting through Qiqi, to retrieve and install the old reactor that Potts had preserved as a commemorative gift 21.

Learning that Potts was confronting Obadiah with a group of agents, Tony suited up and flew to help her. His old reactor struggled to power the armor during the ensuing street battle. Tony caught a car thrown by Obadiah to protect its occupants, but the effort rapidly depleted his remaining energy 22 23.

Qiqi rescued Tony from Obadiah’s bombardment, then froze the enemy armor and disabled its systems. Tony praised her and carried her home through the night sky so she could see the stars 24 25.

After escaping custody, Obadiah attacked Stark Tower with a missile. Tony found Qiqi beneath the collapsed room and held her as she dissolved into ice-blue light. Cut off from his workshop and armor, he was subsequently knocked unconscious. Lin Ze returned in the Traveler’s form and killed Obadiah 25 26.

Becoming Iron Man

Tony survived with cuts, bruises, and a mild concussion, but Qiqi’s death left him devastated. The official account attributed her death to a prototype robot malfunction and concealed Obadiah’s death behind a fabricated plane crash 30 36.

Despite his grief, Tony insisted on attending the press conference. Coulson supplied an alibi placing him aboard his yacht, but Tony abandoned the prepared account after remembering Qiqi and the promise he could no longer fulfill. He publicly declared, “I am Iron Man” 36.

Captivity forces him to confront the innocent lives taken by his weapons. His guilt develops into a concrete decision to stop manufacturing them. He is also ruthless toward his captors, killing Omar even when doing so costs him a possible lead to the kidnapping’s mastermind 9 12 16.

His attachment to Qiqi reveals a deliberate commitment to companionship. Remembering how lonely he felt when his own parents substituted material gifts for time together, Tony makes daily space for her despite his research. Her death leaves him unable to concentrate and repeatedly overwhelmed by memories of her 18 36.
