Miaomiao watched Harvey pour drink after drink down his throat, at something of a loss.
Under the influence of alcohol, Harvey grew agitated. His words came fast and urgent, venting anger mingled with the sorrow of giving up on himself. His speech was disjointed, too, shifting from low and mournful to loud and bitter, with bits of slang mixed in.
Miaomiao had only been learning English for a few months, after all. Everyday conversations normally posed no obvious problems, but faced with Harvey like this, she failed to understand a full half of what he said.
Still, even without catching everything Harvey said, Miaomiao could clearly sense the complicated emotions hidden in his words. In fact, because she could not quite understand him, she found it easier to set aside the things he said but did not mean and feel the pain within him.
