Background / History

Life among the Merfolk

Miaomiao was born and raised in the ocean. Her people raise children communally through designated Elders rather than individual parents. Before reaching Bruce’s world, she had no direct experience of human society; her knowledge came from her kin’s stories and lessons, including Chinese and warnings about humans 2 6 21 25.

She followed a prophecy to another world after forming an unprecedented cross-world connection with Bruce Wayne. Once there, she could find neither a route home nor other Merfolk. Her statement that her siblings were “not in this world” referred to her departure from their world, not their deaths 10 25 26.

According to traditions she recounts, the Merfolk failed at dragon transformation and consequently remained creatures of the sea rather than gaining the ability to soar through the sky. She compares Superman’s extraordinary powers to those attributed to the Divine Dragon of her home world 104.

Meeting and rescuing Bruce

Miaomiao first encountered Bruce beside a cruise ship. Unable to understand his language, she initially fled, but her Perception drew her back. When Bruce addressed her in Chinese, she introduced herself and accepted a cake, returning the favor with a freshly caught bluefin tuna 2 3.

She later rescued Bruce from drowning, placing a breathing bubble around his head and tearing off his heavy Batsuit before bringing him to a deserted island. Bruce reassured her that she did not need to compensate him for destroying the suit 4 5.

During their stay, Bruce taught her English and basic human customs. Miaomiao supplied seafood and salvaged objects from a shipwreck, while Bruce prepared their meals. His invitation to come home with him moved her to tears, producing her first tear pearls 7 8 9 10.

Joining the Wayne household

Miaomiao secretly used her singing and fog to guide a passing vessel toward the island, arranging Bruce’s rescue. She followed the ship to Gotham but lost him when he departed the harbor by car. Tracking the pearl he carried, she eventually reached the Batcave through the underground waterways 17 18 19.

Bruce initially believed she was a victim of illegal experimentation. The family corrected that assumption after learning about her upbringing and Merfolk heritage. Miaomiao also explained that uncontrolled traces of her Illusion Song might have reinforced Bruce’s mistaken belief 21 22.

Alfred arranged an extensive aquatic playground throughout Wayne Manor, and Bruce secretly connected it to the underground river so she could reach Gotham Bay and the sea. Miaomiao settled into a water room furnished with an air mattress and bedding she had woven herself 23 27.

Joker’s television-station crisis

When Joker seized Gotham’s television station, Tim refused to let Miaomiao join the response because her tail would expose her identity. Hurt by being excluded, she left through the waterways, transformed her tail into legs, and went ashore to help 28 29.

Using the alias Quan Ke, she obtained directions and transportation from Poison Ivy. At the station, Miaomiao concealed herself with mist and climbed the exterior wall using her claws 30 32.

She rescued women trapped in a ventilation duct by shielding them with bubbles, removing their bomb collars simultaneously, and throwing the explosives outside. She then located the remaining hostages—including those submerged in tanks—and used water and bubbles to render their bombs harmless, removing Joker’s leverage over Batman 32 35.

Learning human life

After discovering that Miaomiao could take human form, Alfred began teaching her etiquette, clothing, table manners, and self-protection. Bruce later arranged a shopping outing with Damian and provided an unrestricted supplementary spending card 36 39 40 41.

Their outing brought them to the Iceberg Lounge during Red Hood’s confrontation with Penguin’s guards. A frightened penguin chick sheltered between Miaomiao’s feet, and Damian agreed that she could keep it 42 44 45.

Bruce subsequently presented her with a human identity and adoption papers, offering her the name Miaomiao Wayne if she chose to become his daughter. Miaomiao’s surprise led to the revelation that she was older than Bruce despite remaining a Merfolk child. On learning Alfred’s human age, she anxiously prepared tea mixed with two powdered tear pearls and urged him to drink it; the immediate effects of that drink are not shown in the passage 48 49.

Later chapters establish that she accepted the adoption and regards Bruce as her father and the other members of the household as her siblings. She also explicitly identifies herself as Batman’s adopted daughter when meeting Jarro 237 397 460.

Friendships in Gotham

Wanting to thank Poison Ivy, Miaomiao prepared an afternoon-tea gift with Alfred’s help and asked fish near the Gotham River where to find her. Following their vague directions into the sewers instead brought her to a spacious underground chamber and an angry resident 52.

She befriended Killer Croc, whom she calls Little Croc, and enthusiastically suggested bringing him home for Damian to keep. Croc declined, preferring his underground palace. Alfred subsequently encouraged her to study Gotham’s villains and their methods, using files edited by Batman to emphasize practical safety 55 56.

Miaomiao began making regular visits to her friends. Despite Croc’s repeated threats to eat her, he accepted her treats and quietly escorted her home. Her gatherings at Poison Ivy’s residence also came to include Catwoman, who was openly affectionate toward her 60.

After the Bat Family developed new Merfolk-silk equipment, Miaomiao visited Croc with cookies and tea. He told her that Penguin had recruited him for a scheme involving Scarecrow. She immediately warned Bruce and Tim that Scarecrow intended to release fear toxin in three districts while Penguin moved smuggled goods through Miller Harbor 125.

Defeating Bane and running away

When an emergency interrupted the family’s patrol, Miaomiao insisted that the injured Tim remain in the Batcave to provide technical support. Taking his communicator, she left through the waterways to assist Batman and Robin 60.

Operating as Quan Ke, she fought Bane while Batman searched for the missing Damian. Bruce warned her to be careful and not kill anyone; she answered cheerfully, then turned her anger on Bane for hurting him. Her victory over Bane later became a subject of Arkham headlines 61 229.

The family’s stern safety lecture upon her return deeply hurt her. Bruce emphasized that strength could not guarantee protection against stronger opponents or human malice, and demonstrated that her voice no longer automatically influenced him. Although her Perception still told her that everyone cared about her, she interpreted their silence as rejection, splashed Bruce, Tim, and Damian, and fled into the underground river. Tim tracked her toward Crime Alley, where she became lost and hungry but refused to return home 63.

During her time away, Jason looked after her. A spicy hot dog left her voice hoarse and temporarily neutralized her vocal powers. She later accompanied him on a harbor mission, weaving clothes modeled after his outfit and quickly adapting her ocean-hunting instincts to movement and combat on land 67 68 72 73 74.

Seeing Bruce and Jason fight after they had fought alongside one another distressed her. Bruce eventually brought her home in the Batmobile, but she remained troubled by Jason’s absence from the manor and the family’s conflicts 75 76.

Understanding her family and training

Miaomiao directly asked Damian, Tim, and Alfred whether they liked her, distinguishing their sincere answers from defensive denials. She concluded that the family’s harshness and bluster concealed affection. Alfred separately urged Bruce to communicate openly rather than hurt his children through coldness and accusations 80.

She reassured Bruce that she understood his concern and promised to protect her identity, follow his instructions, and avoid acting independently during any future operation in which he needed her help. She also began studying Joker’s methods rather than assuming that her strength made her invincible 81 83.

Meeting Superman exposed the limits of her physical abilities: her strength, claws, and toxins could not penetrate his defenses. She nevertheless discovered that her Illusion Song could control him, making him spin, water the lawn, and imitate Batman before her laughter ended the spell 106 108 120.

Bruce proposed training her Illusion Song against an opponent who would actively resist and use countermeasures. Diana later sparred with Miaomiao and identified her reliance on brute force and hunting instinct. Visiting every other afternoon, Diana taught her to control her balance, observe openings, use precision, and give ground when necessary. Miaomiao improved rapidly under this instruction 109 120 122.

Developing protective equipment

The family’s tests revealed that Miaomiao’s Merfolk silk could resist certain magical attacks as well as repel water and cushion physical blows. They began investigating ways to integrate it into existing protective equipment without sacrificing the properties of other materials 122.

Initial attempts to combine Merfolk silk with Kevlar failed to preserve both materials’ advantages. Alfred’s explanation of how ingredients balance one another in cooking inspired Miaomiao to weave her spiritual power as a third thread. The resulting thin, tough material repaired a shallow cut from Bruce’s Batarang and passed physical-protection tests, with a measured 47 percent improvement in magical resistance 124.

The Bat Family subsequently upgraded suits and equipment using lighter, waterproof, magic-resistant silk blends. Once she had prepared the materials, the remaining production work no longer required her involvement 125.

Joker, the Mad Hatter, and Harley

After learning what Joker had done to Jason, Miaomiao resolved to retaliate and sought information from Pamela. Her first attempt to leave secretly for Arkham was stopped by Batman 110 111.

She later reached Arkham and used her Illusion Song to leave Joker silent and trapped in a dream. Jason, Damian, and Miaomiao departed after Tim warned that Batman was approaching; she and Damian erased signs of their intrusion and returned to the manor by water. The younger family members then gathered at Jason’s new safe house, where he questioned her about the beads she had taken from his old one 163.

During Gotham’s Christmas festival, an eccentric stranger called her Alice and invited her to a tea party. She initially refused his gift because she did not know him and was not the person he sought 211.

The stranger was the Mad Hatter. Miaomiao had already sensed his malice and was unaffected by his brainwave-control device. She voluntarily pretended to be hypnotized to investigate his intentions, treating the experience as an adventure until the sight of the girls he controlled and imprisoned made her angry 214.

Bruce later asked her to investigate the limits of her Illusion Song as part of developing a treatment plan to help Harley escape mind control. Despite her substantial progress, Miaomiao worried that her ability or imperfect control might worsen Harley’s condition. The supplied passages establish the testing and her renewed understanding of the importance of confidence, but not the final outcome of Harley’s treatment 256 257 258.

Christmas and extended family

Miaomiao learned about additional Bat Family members through a series of introductions. Bruce apologized for not introducing everyone properly earlier, while Jason explained that the family had become accustomed to discovering new members through investigation rather than ordinary welcomes 208 209.

Her first White Christmas brought the Wayne family together and surrounded her with gifts from friends and acquaintances across Gotham and beyond. These included the Kent family, Diana, Aquaman, Barry, Hal, Commissioner Gordon, Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Harley Quinn, and Two-Face. Penguin sent an expensive music box and an exclusive Iceberg Lounge membership card, reflecting the business olive branch extended by Wayne Enterprises 245.

The affection and company she experienced that Christmas produced enough blue-violet tear pearls to fill a box. She later explained that these pearls formed naturally amid everyone’s love and could be used by anyone 374.

Visiting New York

Tony Stark visited Wayne Manor after discovering that Bruce had kept Miaomiao’s adoption from him. Bruce introduced them and explained that she was not an ordinary human; Tony became interested in her nature and abilities 197 200.

Bruce later encouraged Miaomiao to accept Tony’s invitation to New York. She took her first flight aboard a private plane, arriving with a backpack Alfred had prepared, and was welcomed by Happy Hogan before traveling toward Tony’s company 285.

In New York, Miaomiao fought the brainwashed Winter Soldier and Hydra agents during a base’s self-destruction. She used a silent shriek to stun those present, knocked the Winter Soldier unconscious, and carried him out. With spiritual power coating her claws, she tore through machinery and walls rather than spend the remaining time searching for a normal exit. She escaped inside a protective bubble just before the base exploded 298.

She also befriended Matt Murdock, whose appearance, melancholy, and nighttime dedication to his city reminded her of Bruce. Matt served as her temporary guardian without disclosing her father’s identity to his colleagues. Miaomiao explained her Merfolk nature to him and insisted on accompanying him home because his presence made her feel safe 304 319 323.

After channeling spiritual power into Matt following his battle with Fisk and examining his eyes, she offered to restore his sight. Bruce warned that recovering his vision could cost him the heightened senses he used as Daredevil. Matt chose to remain blind so he could continue protecting Hell’s Kitchen 343.

On returning from New York, Miaomiao used spiritual power to temporarily revive an exhausted Dick and urged him to rest. She also distributed gifts from her Merfolk-silk bag, including a rare vintage game cartridge Damian had long sought 367.

The Cullens and the vampire crisis

At a dessert shop in Blüdhaven, Miaomiao approached the Cullen family with Hayley and introduced herself. Carlisle introduced his relatives in turn, and Miaomiao openly admired their beauty 388.

When Dick became involved in a vampire threat, Miaomiao regarded him as the more vulnerable member of their partnership. Unlike ordinary human fighters, she possessed both powerful physical abilities and innate resistance to mind control 398.

Feeling uneasy during Dick’s absence, she followed the trace of a charm she had woven for him to a cemetery. His electronic tracking signal and presence disappeared near the closed waffle shop, and Alice urgently warned her that Nightwing would die if he acted alone that night 411.

Miaomiao attacked the vampires’ underground palace to create enough chaos to save Dick. She treated anyone blocking her path as an enemy and used overwhelming force against the defenders. By the end of the confrontation, all leaders of the Shadow Attendants had been slain, and observers recognized that she could casually crush a vampire lord. Even then, her anger at the danger to her family had not subsided, and she demanded that anyone who had attacked Dick step forward 413 415.

The battle also demonstrated improved transformation control: unlike an earlier incident in which excessive power use forced her back into her tail, she remained in human form until returning to the apartment despite comparable exertion 433.

Attending school and visiting the Watchtower

Bruce’s concerns extended beyond keeping Miaomiao physically safe. He recognized that her acceptance of human rules rested largely on affection for her family, and that danger to them could cause her to abandon those restraints 434.

Miaomiao subsequently began attending Anders Academy. Alfred handled her transfer arrangements and accompanied her on her first day, while Tim and Damian went to their own classes. She told her new classmates that she had never attended school before; her Wayne surname and adoption immediately attracted whispers 435 436.

At school, Seraphina Dumas intervened when Miaomiao was called on during a lesson. Miaomiao later accepted John Elliott’s tennis challenge despite having never played. With Lia explaining the rules, she gradually adjusted to the racket and ball, scored a point upheld by Mr. Harrison, and continued learning even while John intensified his attacks 439 445 446.

Bruce also brought her to the Justice League’s Watchtower through teleportation. Seeing Earth and the stars from space for the first time amazed her. She reunited with Barry Allen, who fetched chocolates at super speed, and inadvertently deflated his pride by asking whether he or Superman was faster 458.

At the Watchtower, she met Jarro, whose psychic speech reached her directly. As a fellow marine being, he quickly won her affection; she explained that Batman had adopted her and praised his work on missions 460.

Appearance

Miaomiao resembles a delicate teenage girl with East Asian features, despite her chronological age and considerable physical power 6 17 49.

  • Hair and eyes: Very dark blue-violet, appearing black until bright sunlight reveals their color 9.
  • Build and skin: Small and slender, with baby fat on her cheeks and exceptionally fair, soft skin 20 37.
  • Tail: A luminous blue-purple fish tail comprising almost two-thirds of her body length, with neat, softly glowing scales 19.
  • Nails: Pointed, translucent claws with the same blue-to-purple gradient as her tail 5.
  • Human form: Smooth, slender legs and feet resembling those of an ordinary teenage girl 29 37.
  • Clothing: Usually wears self-woven Merfolk silk; one described outfit is a pale purple dress with matching hair ribbons 36 41.
  • Tactical clothing: Can reproduce human clothing after observing it, including a fitted long-sleeved top and tactical pants closely modeled on Jason’s colors and style 72.
  • School clothing: Wears an Anders Academy uniform after enrolling 458.

Personality

Miaomiao is affectionate, curious, and eager to learn. Bruce finds that she can accurately remember unfamiliar words after hearing them only once or twice. Her gaps in human common knowledge reflect limited experience rather than a lack of intelligence 5 10.

Food is one of her greatest pleasures. Before leaving home, she coaxed an Elder who traded ashore into bringing back human food. She readily reciprocates kindness, whether by catching a tuna in exchange for cake or obtaining food when she realizes Bruce has not eaten 3 7.

Her sweetness conceals a mischievous and forceful streak. She understands that humans can be kind or cruel and regards strength—not ignorance of danger—as a Merfolk’s essential protection. She nevertheless readily accepts Bruce’s prohibition against killing 25 26 38.

Miaomiao dislikes being excluded under the guise of protection. She believes genuine protection should teach someone to grow and stand independently, which helps drive her decision to assist during Joker’s attack despite the family’s refusal 28.

She shares her people’s attraction to beautiful, intricate, lavish, brightly colored, and glittering objects. Her initial distaste for the all-black Batsuit contributed to her enthusiasm when dismantling it, though she later learned to respect the importance and value of objects that did not suit her own tastes 5 18.

Unlike the more emotionally guarded members of the Bat Family, Miaomiao expresses affection, distress, and delight openly. She also knows how to use apologies, promises, and deliberate cuteness to seek forgiveness, making her unusually adept at wheedling by Merfolk standards. A cold reception can hurt her deeply even when her Perception confirms that the others still love her 63 67 80.

Her loyalty is personal rather than initially civic-minded. She becomes Batman’s assistant because she loves her family and wants to protect what they cherish, not because she considers Gotham’s safety her own inherent responsibility. She struggles to understand why Bruce and his children take on duties that she believes should belong to governments, soldiers, and police 237.

Miaomiao is fiercely protective and holds grudges against those who hurt her family. Learning about Jason’s past motivates her retaliation against Joker, while Dick’s near-death drives her to lethal violence against vampires. Bruce identifies the distinction between her affectionate behavior toward the family and her much weaker identification with humanity as a serious concern 110 413 415 434.

She is capable of caution and self-correction. She studies Joker’s tactics, recognizes that her first success depended partly on surprising him, and improves quickly when Diana teaches her to abandon inefficient habits. Her tennis experience likewise shows patience and concentration rather than discouragement when she repeatedly misses 83 122 446.

Her view of herself as an underage Merfolk does not mean she identifies with ordinary human teenagers. When refusing John’s request to become involved in dangerous work, she tells “teenage cubs” to remain safely behind and leave professional tasks to Batman, while apparently excluding her fifty-something self from that category 466.

Abilities & Skills

Perception and tracking

Her innate gift, Perception, helps her recognize significant connections and sense nearby presences 3 28.

  • Detects her unusual connection with Bruce and warns her about Joker’s malice 3 28.
  • Locates familiar presences within Wayne Manor and the Batcave 28.
  • Tracks a pearl she has given Bruce by its scent 19.
  • Cannot use that pearl to pinpoint him when he leaves it behind 32.
  • Senses traces emanating from a person’s heart or soul rather than directly reading thoughts 103.
  • Recognizes affection and distinguishes sincere statements from defensive lies during her conversation with Damian, Tim, and Alfred 80.
  • Detects the Mad Hatter’s concealed malice before voluntarily pretending to fall under his control 214.
  • Senses Matt’s sadness and the resemblance between his loneliness and Bruce’s 304.
  • Maintains a connection to charms she has woven from silk, hair, scales, and pearls, allowing her to follow Dick’s charm after his electronic signal weakens and disappears. The charm’s trace does not provide an unrestricted ability to locate him through every barrier 411.

Strength, speed, and claws

Miaomiao possesses extraordinary physical power. Her early fighting relies on hunting instincts rather than formal human combat training; she later develops technique under Diana’s guidance 26 73 120 122.

  • Catches and throws a large bluefin tuna onto a ship’s deck 3.
  • Tears apart the Batsuit and crushes a fist-sized rock with a gentle squeeze 4 5.
  • Cuts ropes, rips out a ventilation grille, and tears through a ceiling 32.
  • Climbs a multistory building by digging her claws into its exterior 32.
  • Easily keeps pace with Bruce’s returning vessel while swimming 17.
  • Initially warns that her claws might be poisonous to humans; later combat confirms that their scratches cause tingling, numbness, and loss of movement 5 74.
  • Can regulate the neurotoxin released through her nails. Unrestrained toxin is described as sufficient to kill through even a tiny break in the skin, while she deliberately limits it in ordinary fights 106.
  • Cuts through thick tactical vests and handgun-resistant body armor with her claws 74.
  • Defeats Bane and later knocks the Winter Soldier unconscious, carrying the much larger man out of a collapsing Hydra base 229 298.
  • Coats her claws in spiritual power to tear through machinery and walls during the escape 298.
  • Possesses strength, defense, and recovery comparable to the superpowered vampires she confronts, and demonstrates sufficient power to crush a vampire lord 398 415.
  • Cannot penetrate Superman’s physical defenses with her strength, claws, or toxins 106 120.
  • Moves substantially faster in water than on land 411.

Water, mist, and bubbles

Miaomiao manipulates water and creates bubbles with both life-support and protective applications 4 11 32 35.

  • Encloses Bruce’s head in a bubble that allows him to breathe underwater 4 11.
  • Uses mist to hide herself near the ship and at the television station 3 32.
  • Envelops hostages in bubbles and floats them safely out of confinement 32.
  • Contains and transports bomb collars before their detonation 32.
  • Uses water control to locate hostages and learns to neutralize bombs with currents and bubbles 35.
  • Summons a storm over Gotham to disperse Scarecrow’s fear toxin, though the exertion initially disrupts her transformation control 131 132 433.
  • Demonstrates fine control by changing a water orb into mist, water arrows, and a miniature coral shape decorated with persistent bubbles 147.
  • Describes water manipulation as a blood-born instinct that grows with age and soul; effective use depends on spiritual resonance and practice 147.
  • Applies a cold compress to Little Jo through water control, explicitly distinguishing that action from supernatural healing 152.
  • Controls freely flowing liquids such as milk, lifting it from a bucket and distributing it precisely into bottles 157.
  • Uses a protective bubble during her escape from the destroyed Hydra base 298.

Illusion Song

Merfolk voices can soothe emotions, influence thoughts, and create illusions. Miaomiao’s early control is incomplete because she has not reached adulthood, but she develops substantially greater precision within less than half a year 17 22 257.

  • Influences a sailor into steering toward the island where Bruce is stranded 17.
  • Can unintentionally release power while speaking; she believes this strengthened Bruce’s mistaken “test subject” explanation 22.
  • Promises to work harder at controlling these accidental effects 22.
  • Describes full illusory realms as something powerful Merfolk can create, not a demonstrated ability of her own 22.
  • Controls Superman through song despite being unable to harm him physically. He follows her instructions, including imitating Batman, and remembers his actions after the illusion ends 108 120.
  • Leaves Joker silent and trapped in a dream at Arkham 163.
  • Progresses from uncontrolled leakage to deliberately influencing a chosen person, hypnotizing them, or creating an illusion; her later achievements include sending all of Arkham into a deep sleep 257.
  • Is considered a formidable mental power because controlling Superman requires much more than exploiting a trivial weakness 215.
  • Depends on spiritual power and emotional state. Fear destabilizes Illusion Technique even when sufficient power is available 258.
  • Can be blocked or weakened by sound-magic countermeasures, such as the crescent-shaped magical item Bruce wears on his wrist 63 109.
  • Is temporarily impaired when her voice becomes hoarse after eating one of Jason’s spicy hot dogs 67.
  • Is investigated as a possible means of helping Harley escape mind control; a successful treatment is not established in the supplied passages 256 257 258.

Merfolk traditions also describe specialists capable of trapping others in complete illusions and legendary figures who can turn illusion into a real, habitable world. Miaomiao is explicitly far below that legendary level 214.

Marine communication and hearing

Miaomiao can communicate with intelligent marine animals and possesses particularly acute hearing underwater 11 32.

  • Sings with dolphins and receives their help finding a shipwreck 8 11.
  • Sends a sound wave beyond human hearing through Gotham Bay to seek assistance 28.
  • Finds listening more difficult on land without water to carry sound 32.
  • Asks fish near the Gotham River for directions to Poison Ivy, though their answers are vague enough to lead her into another resident’s territory 52.
  • Uses a silent shriek to stun the Winter Soldier and surrounding Hydra agents 298.
  • Can still hear quiet comments and whispers at school that others nearby miss 435 439.

Tail-to-leg transformation

Changing between a fish tail and human legs is an innate Merfolk ability, requiring neither a bargain nor the loss of her voice 35 37.

  • Transformation has no harmful effects 37.
  • Duration depends on spiritual power, while reliable switching depends on control 37.
  • Underage Merfolk may unexpectedly revert to their tails 31 37.
  • Miaomiao initially struggles to walk and prefers her stronger, faster, scaled tail 29 36.
  • Brief periods out of water do not harm her, but she becomes uncomfortable without regular soaking 19.
  • Normally maintains human legs for at least twenty-four hours by the time of her first unexpected reversion, usually returning to her tail to sleep in water 132.
  • Excessive use of Spiritual Power Arts can disrupt her internal balance and force an involuntary return to her tailed form 131 132.
  • Later retains human form after the underground-palace battle despite exertion comparable to the earlier incident, demonstrating improved control 433.

Water-woven silk

Miaomiao weaves water into Merfolk silk, an innate craft of her people 22.

  • The fabric is light, thin, lustrous, supple, and comfortable 22.
  • It does not become wet underwater and provides some temperature regulation 22.
  • She makes clothing, bedding, and a face covering to conceal her identity 27 29 41.
  • Can reproduce a range of clothing styles after seeing them once 72.
  • Ordinary Merfolk silk cushions some physical attacks and resists certain magical attacks, though its softness limits its usefulness for some equipment 122.
  • Combines Merfolk silk, Kevlar fibers, and spiritual-power thread into a thin, tough protective fabric. The spiritual thread binds the otherwise incompatible materials together 124.
  • The successful blend repairs a shallow Batarang cut, meets physical-protection standards, and records a 47 percent increase in magical resistance 124.
  • Supplies the basis for lighter, waterproof, magic-resistant Bat Family suits and equipment 125.
  • Weaves charms and hand cords incorporating her hair, scales, and pearls; these help clear the mind and offer protection against magic 411.

Pearls from tears

Her falling tears transform into perfectly round, blue-violet pearls, a trait shared by all Merfolk 10.

  • First manifests when Bruce invites her home 10.
  • Produces more pearls while crying over Alfred’s cookies 20 21.
  • Batcave testing finds exceptional quality, unusual coloration, and no nucleus, but no detectable difference from natural pearls beyond those traits 49.
  • She powders two pearls into tea for Alfred; the immediate result of that particular drink is not shown 49.
  • Pearls vary in appearance with the circumstances of her crying: those left after Bruce’s harsh lecture are pale and bitter-looking, while those he collects during her return home are deep purple 63 75.
  • Later evidence establishes that Merfolk tear pearls can harm people as well as save them, rather than serving only as gemstones 343.
  • Produces a box of pearls while surrounded by her family’s love at Christmas, and states that anyone can use those naturally formed pearls 374.
  • Incorporates pearls into protective charms alongside her hair and scales 411.

Mental resistance and spiritual support

Miaomiao’s Merfolk nature gives her strong resistance to invasive mental abilities, alongside other applications of spiritual power 214 343 398.

  • The Mad Hatter’s brainwave-control device cannot invade her thoughts; she only appears controlled because she chooses to act the part 214.
  • Regards vampires’ mind-control abilities as essentially ineffective against her because Merfolk are natural masters of mental influence 398.
  • Channels spiritual power into Matt after his battle with Fisk and examines his damaged eyes 343.
  • Offers to restore Matt’s sight, but does not perform the proposed restoration because he refuses the risk of losing his enhanced senses 343.
  • Temporarily revives an exhausted Dick with spiritual power, while emphasizing that he still needs proper rest 367.

Combat technique and limitations

Miaomiao’s childhood hunting in the moving waters of the ocean gives her an instinctive understanding of concealment, ambush, and timing. Jason recognizes these qualities when she rapidly learns to follow his movements on a land mission 73.

  • Uses her small human-form body, flexibility, and agility to slip between armed opponents and evade attacks from unusual angles 74.
  • Initially attacks with savage, explosive movements aimed at vulnerable areas such as the shoulder and neck 120.
  • Diana identifies excessive forward weight, inefficient force, and a lack of structured technique as exploitable weaknesses 120 122.
  • Learns to observe movement, locate openings, control force, use precise strikes, and prepare counters instead of meeting every attack directly 122.
  • Improves at an exceptional rate under Diana’s instruction every other afternoon 122.
  • Has comparatively weak endurance on land; the sea continually replenishes Merfolk strength, but land combat exposes this limitation 120.
  • Remains vulnerable to sufficiently powerful, prepared opponents, especially those who combine overwhelming speed or strength with counters to her vocal magic 122.
  • Applies her rapid learning and control of strength outside combat, gradually adjusting to a tennis racket, swing timing, and ball trajectories during her first match 445 446.

Power Progression

Chapter(s) Development Demonstrated capability or limitation
3 First displayed innate gifts Perception draws her back to Bruce; mist conceals her approach, and she catches and throws a large bluefin tuna 3.
4, 5 Physical power and underwater rescue Tears apart the Batsuit, crushes a rock, and creates a breathing bubble for Bruce; claw toxicity is initially only suspected 4 5.
10 First tear pearls Tears become blue-violet pearls when Bruce invites her home 10.
17 Intentional vocal influence Uses singing to guide a vessel toward Bruce’s island and easily follows it through the sea 17.
19 Pearl-based tracking Follows the scent of her pearl to the Batcave 19.
