If he couldn't handle it, he would find a way. He absolutely couldn't let things escalate to the point where the little girl went running to her family.
Even leaving everyone else aside, if the famously flamboyant and fiercely protective Stark learned that someone had hurt the little girl under his protection, all of New York would probably be thrown into chaos.
