Thankfully, not everyone was unreliable.
The patriarch of the Cullen family, Carlisle Cullen, stepped forward.
He was tall and slender, his pale blond hair gleaming like golden threads in the firelight.
"Lord Pandora, we mean no offense. Everything we have done today was out of necessity. We only want to prevent a tragedy."
Though he was a vampire too, Carlisle wore only ordinary casual clothes. Yet standing among the lavishly dressed Shadow Attendants, he seemed no less imposing.
"Necessity?"
Pandora sneered. If she had been certain of their strength, she would already have ordered her subordinates to tear every one of these insolent challengers to pieces.
"There is nothing to discuss. You dared to enter my Underground Palace and disrupt my plans. None of you will leave here alive!"
"You cannot easily kill or control all of us."
Rather than launching into a lengthy argument, Carlisle simply stated a fact.
He had lived in this world as a vampire for centuries, and he knew perfectly well that reason only worked on reasonable people. When dealing with someone who spoke through force, you had to make them understand that you could fight back before they would settle down and listen.
Sure enough, Pandora's expression darkened at Carlisle's words, but her hands slowed.
"What exactly are you trying to say?"
"Our purpose is clear. We want to prevent a catastrophe-an unprecedented, terrifying catastrophe."
In the firelight, a trace of lingering fear actually appeared on Carlisle's normally composed face.
"For humans and vampires alike..."
