Background / History
Life at Winterfell
Jon grew up at Winterfell under Eddard Stark’s protection, but Catelyn regarded his presence as a constant reminder of her husband’s apparent infidelity. Ned insisted on raising him in the castle and became angry when questioned about Jon’s mother. Although Catelyn did not abuse Jon, her persistent scorn left him isolated within his own home 11.
While accompanying Ned’s party, Jon spotted a dead direwolf and recognized that it was a mother rather than a monster. After five pups were found, he discovered a sixth hidden in a snowdrift and claimed the quiet, white, red-eyed pup despite Theon’s mockery 2 3.
Jon later recalls that Ned taught him swordsmanship, riding, and honor without distinguishing him from Robb or Bran. He remembers sharing Ser Rodrik’s punishments with Robb, receiving lemon cakes secretly saved by Sansa after Catelyn scolded him, and watching the stars from the roof with Arya. These memories ultimately become central to his sense of belonging at Winterfell 436.
Choosing the Wall
Jon approached Lynn to ask whether a bastard could earn respect in the Night’s Watch. Lynn explained that courage, swordsmanship, and reliability mattered more than birth, but warned that taking the black meant surrendering family, lands, marriage, and children 11.
Excluded from the high table during the royal feast, Jon asked Benjen to take him to the Wall. Benjen initially refused, arguing that Jon was too young to understand the sacrifice. Shortly afterward, Tyrion advised Jon to accept the name Snow and use it as armor against others’ contempt. Jon acknowledged the advice and regained some resolve 17 18.
Before leaving Winterfell, Jon commissioned Mikken to make a thin sword for Arya. Ned entrusted both Jon and Arya to Lynn, and Jon departed north with Lynn, Benjen, Tyrion, and a hundred northern cavalrymen 28 29.
Journey North
Lynn assigned Jon to remain with men protecting Arya when news arrived of a caravan attack. Jon later witnessed Lynn execute the captured bandits and was chilled by the scale and emotional detachment of the killings. His reaction shifted toward admiration when Lynn refused the merchants’ payment and ordered compensation from the stolen goods 30 31.
Meeting Yoren’s recruits challenged Jon’s idealized view of the Watch. He had imagined defenders like Benjen and Lynn, not men sent north for crimes. Tyrion bluntly confronted him with that reality. At the Wall itself, however, the immense structure temporarily restored Jon’s sense of purpose 32 36.
Castle Black
At Castle Black, Jon began copying Lynn’s strength exercises using iron pots as makeshift weights. Lynn encouraged him to increase the load gradually rather than begin with excessive weight 39.
Alliser Thorne ordered the other recruits to attack Jon during training. Drawing on Ser Rodrik’s instruction, Jon defeated them all, but his contempt for their criminal backgrounds worsened his isolation. Grenn, Pyp, and two others later ambushed him, restrained him, and threatened him with a dagger until Lynn intervened 42.
Lynn then explained the poverty and abandonment behind Grenn’s and Pyp’s circumstances, making Jon reconsider his assumption of superiority. He urged Jon to teach the recruits swordsmanship and build friendships rather than continue treating them as enemies 43.
News that Bran could walk with crutches brought Jon joy, followed by homesickness and guilt over leaving his family. He asked Lynn to carry a message telling Bran that he thought of him every day and wanted him to remain strong. Jon stayed behind when Benjen and Lynn left beyond the Wall 43 44.
By the time Lynn later joined Jon’s table, Jon was chatting comfortably with Grenn, Pyp, Sam, and several other recruits. Lynn’s intervention had developed into a substantial improvement in their relationships 62.
Witnessing the Undead
When Lynn prepared for the corpses at Castle Black to rise, Jon arrived with Ghost. Lynn directed him to wait with Harvey’s squad, avoid rash action, and protect both himself and Arya 53.
During the attack on Mormont, Jon was initially stunned by the sight of a reanimated corpse with blue-burning eyes, unnatural strength, and intense cold. Lynn’s command to burn it brought him out of his daze, and Jon raised the torch he was holding 54.
After the crisis, Jon thanked Lynn and acknowledged that the legendary White Walkers were real. He recognized that the Watch’s principal enemy was not the Wildlings but the undead, and apologized on Ned’s behalf for nearly having Lynn beheaded. Lynn dismissed any resentment, strengthening Jon’s admiration for him 57.
Following Thorne’s execution and Lynn’s rise in authority, Jon and the other recruits trained harder. Comparing his own dependence on guidance with Lynn’s achievements, Jon resolved to become strong enough to stand independently and protect others 78.
Peace with the Free Folk
Returning from beyond the Wall, Jon brought a map found outside Craster’s keep and warned that Mance Rayder appeared to be gathering nearly all the Wildlings for a possible attack. He reunited warmly with Lynn and asked about his family in King’s Landing 137.
When a second vote on peace negotiations ended at twenty-five votes on each side, Mormont called on Jon to decide the outcome. Jon voted in favor, producing a twenty-six-vote majority. He cited the burned villages and frozen corpses he had seen as a Ranger, argued that the Free Folk were struggling to survive, and identified the dead as the true enemy of all living people 137 138.
Jon then accompanied Lynn, three Rangers, and Ygritte beyond the Wall to meet Mance. They traveled on foot with dragonglass weapons, leaving Winter behind because Lynn feared that the Night’s King might target the dragon. Before departure, Lynn advised Jon to approach the negotiations as the stronger side offering terms rather than as a supplicant 138.
At the Fist of the First Men, the party encountered the Night’s King. Despite his fear, Jon drew his dragonglass longsword and attempted to charge while shouting for the living. Lynn seized his wrist and stopped him, explaining that the Night’s King was not there to fight and could already have killed them if he wished 139 140.
During the subsequent encounter with the Three-Eyed Raven, Jon recognized that Bran might satisfy the Raven’s requirements for a new body and objected. Lynn refused to provide anyone with a wolf spirit. The Children of the Forest’s song soothed Jon and Ygritte, but the proposed transfer of bodies left Jon wary enough to grip his sword again 142 143.
Settlement Work and Blessed Items
Before departing for Essos, Lynn reassured Jon that food and money would be available for the Free Folk. He tasked Jon with gathering blessed plants and rapidly constructing stone houses for their settlement 150.
Jon continued searching for Blessed Items on Lynn’s behalf. When Lynn visited Castle Black with Myrcella, Sam reported that Jon was away on that work. Lynn waited until evening before departing without meeting him 208.
During these expeditions, Jon occasionally encountered White Walkers and wights that did not attack first. He even approached wights directly without provoking them. Lynn regarded this unusual behavior as evidence that the Night’s King’s intentions were more complicated than a straightforward campaign against the living 255.
Carrying the Night’s King’s Message South
When White Walkers appeared outside the Wall bearing a message, Jon volunteered to retrieve it despite the other black brothers’ objections. Mormont authorized him to approach, and Benjen promised to cover him from the Wall. Accompanied by Ghost and armed with his dragonglass longsword, Jon accepted a weirwood branch and an ice-crystal scroll from the White Walker leader, who showed no hostility 258.
Mormont identified the scroll as a letter from the Night’s King and ordered Jon to deliver it and the blessed items to Lynn. He argued that Lynn’s support had become essential to the Watch’s survival and that the mission fulfilled its duty to guard the realms of men. To avoid trouble over the Watch’s vows, he instructed Jon to conceal his membership and pose as a Winterfell messenger or a representative bringing congratulations for Lynn’s marriage 258.
Benjen joined Jon, and the two rode south in ordinary clothes. Arya subsequently recognized Jon as he approached, his face chapped by the wind and his curls covered in snow 258 259.
Jon was later present with Arya and Benjen when Lynn announced that Ramsay would be kept alive for a harsher punishment. During the operation against the Vale, Lynn left Jon, Benjen, and Arya with Mance’s Wildling force while he flew toward the Eyrie with ten White Walkers. The force at the Bloody Gate was instructed to harass and pin the Vale’s soldiers rather than launch a costly frontal assault 264 265.
Disbandment of the Night’s Watch
After a third of the Wall melted overnight, White Walkers began crossing it in large numbers. With the White Walkers brought to heel and the Wildlings settled south in the Gift, Mormont declared that the Wall had lost its purpose and disbanded the Night’s Watch. Its men were released from their vows and could once again marry and have children 431.
Jon, Benjen, and Sam, having nowhere else to go, returned to Winterfell. Jon still wore his faded black clothes and regarded the castle as home, though he remained uncertain of his place there. He found Winterfell transformed by new houses, brick kilns, unfamiliar residents, and children receiving lessons. An attendant directed the returning party to Lynn in Ned’s former study 431.
The dissolution of the Watch also left Jon without a clear purpose. With its ancient enemies subdued, he felt that his martial skills no longer had an obvious cause to serve 432.
Parentage Revealed
At Winterfell, Ned finally told Jon that his mother was Lyanna Stark, who had died after entrusting her child to him at the Tower of Joy. Ned admitted that the account of Jon being his bastard son was a lie maintained for nearly twenty years. Jon realized that Rhaegar Targaryen was his father and that his birth might make him an heir to the throne 432.
The revelation distressed Jon more than his former bastard status. Ned assured him that he was the child Ned had sworn to protect and that Stark blood meant he would always be a Stark. Daenerys simultaneously realized that Jon was her nephew. When Jon questioned his lack of silver hair and violet eyes, Lynn explained that he had inherited Lyanna’s dark hair, long face, and gray eyes 432.
Lynn then allowed those present to witness the past. Jon saw the dying Lyanna name her baby Aegon Targaryen and make Ned promise to protect him. Returning to Winterfell’s study, he struggled to reconcile the names Jon Snow and Aegon Targaryen, while Catelyn felt shame over her treatment of him. Jon fled the room to seek solitude in the Godswood, wishing that he had never learned the truth and could simply remain Jon Snow 435.
Reaffirming His Stark Identity
In the Godswood, Theon attempted to exploit Jon’s confusion by emphasizing their shared outsider status, Catelyn’s rejection, and the insults Jon had endured. He asked whether Jon had ever hated the Starks, hoping to draw him into his own ambitions 435 436.
Rather than agreeing, Jon became calm and defended the family that had raised him. He acknowledged Catelyn’s dislike but noted that she had never denied him food or warm clothing, and interpreted her hostility as the fear of a betrayed wife. He argued that neither the name Snow nor Targaryen blood could erase the lessons and affection that had shaped him at Winterfell 436.
Jon rejected the Iron Throne, associating it with war, suffering, and Robert’s unhappy life. He declared himself a direwolf and reminded Theon that Ned, Robb, and Maester Luwin had also treated him as family. His words forced Theon to confront the ingratitude of his intended betrayal. When Theon retched in anguish, Jon quietly offered him a handkerchief and encouraged him to return indoors. Jon left the Godswood having found his answer about who he was 436.
Appearance
Jon has dark hair, gray eyes, and a handsome face. Early descriptions distinguish his appearance from that of the Stark children around him, but his resemblance to Lyanna is later explicitly recognized 11 17 432 435.
- Hair and facial features: His hair is described as black in earlier scenes and as thick, dark brown curls during the parentage revelation. Lynn identifies his long face, dark hair, and gray eyes as traits inherited from Lyanna 11 259 432.
- Usual training clothing: Plain leather armor, including black leather armor during the royal feast 11 17.
- Practice weapon: Frequently carries a blunted sword while training alone at Winterfell 11 13 17.
- Night’s Watch clothing: Wears a black cloak during his Ranger service and faded black clothes when returning to Winterfell after the order’s dissolution 137 431.
- Later appearance: Ranger service replaces his earlier boyishness with a weathered, composed appearance. On his return to Winterfell, he stands taller and straighter, with the effects of wind and weather visible on his face 137 431.
Personality
Jon is reserved and sensitive to the stigma attached to his surname. At Winterfell, he instinctively chooses secluded places to train and longs for somewhere his birth will not define him. Tyrion’s advice helps him begin accepting that identity rather than simply trying to escape it 11 13 17 18.
His pride can turn into arrogance. At Castle Black, he initially dismisses fellow recruits as criminals unworthy of friendship and taunts Grenn even when confronted after training. Nevertheless, he listens when Lynn points out how much his own privileged instruction contributed to his victories 42 43.
Jon’s attachment to his siblings remains strong despite his decision to leave. Bran’s recovery exposes how deeply he misses Winterfell, while his support for Arya’s swordsmanship contrasts with the expectations placed on her elsewhere in the household 28 43.
His experiences at the Wall broaden his understanding of duty. Having witnessed the undead and the suffering beyond the Wall, he supports peace with the Free Folk despite opposition from traditionalists. He regards the protection of living people as more important than perpetuating inherited hatred 54 57 138.
Jon is courageous but can act rashly in the face of a perceived threat. He tries to attack the Night’s King despite overwhelming fear, requiring Lynn to restrain him. His later approach to the White Walker messenger is more deliberate: he seeks Mormont’s permission, carries an appropriate weapon, and proceeds despite the other brothers’ alarm 140 258.
Lynn’s example inspires both admiration and a desire for independence. Jon recognizes how often he relies on protection and guidance, and resolves to become capable of protecting others himself 57 78.
The revelation of his birth initially destabilizes his sense of self, but he ultimately rejects the idea that ancestry determines identity. He chooses the values and familial bonds formed at Winterfell over royal ambition, refuses to hate the Starks, and treats Theon compassionately even after Theon attempts to turn him against them 435 436.
Abilities & Skills
Swordsmanship
Jon received formal instruction from Ser Rodrik at Winterfell and is substantially better trained than the inexperienced recruits at Castle Black 42 43.
- Multiple-opponent tactics: Avoids becoming surrounded, looks for openings, and disables opponents individually 42.
- Precise disarming: Strikes an attacker’s wrist to force him to drop his sword 42.
- Defensive movement: Uses a lowered stance and sidesteps uncontrolled attacks rather than meeting them directly 42.
- Limit: His training-yard success does not prevent a prepared group from restraining him during an unarmed ambush 42.
- Later field experience: Serves as a Ranger and states that he has fought Wildlings. He carries a dragonglass longsword during encounters with the Night’s King and White Walker messengers, although no successful duel with either is recorded 138 140 258.
Unarmed Combat
Jon combines sword techniques with close-range blows during the recruits’ attack 42.
- Uses fists, elbows, and kicks to knock opponents down after disarming them 42.
- Believes he can defeat Grenn barehanded, but is caught off guard when the other recruits seize him 42.
Strength Training
Jon adopts Lynn’s unfamiliar weighted exercises after watching him train with kitchen pots 39.
- Tests the pots’ weight before copying Lynn’s movements 39.
- Receives guidance to build up gradually; no numerical attribute gain or ranked skill advancement is recorded for Jon 39.
- Trains harder alongside the other recruits after witnessing Lynn’s rise and Thorne’s execution 78.
Riding and Ranger Experience
- Horsemanship: Ned taught Jon to ride, and Jon travels on horseback both during the journey north and on later missions 29 258 431 436.
- Ranging: Conducts expeditions beyond the Wall, retrieves a map near Craster’s keep, and reports on Mance Rayder’s gathering forces 137 138.
- Threat assessment: Recognizes the significance of destroyed settlements and distinguishes the Free Folk’s struggle for survival from the undead threat 138.
- Blessed Item collection: Undertakes repeated searches for blessed plants and other Blessed Items at Lynn’s request 150 208 255.
Judgment and Persuasion
Jon casts the deciding vote for peace negotiations by appealing to the Night’s Watch’s duty to protect the living. His argument emphasizes shared humanity and the practical danger of fighting one another while the dead advance 138.
His later defense of his Stark upbringing also has a decisive effect on Theon. By recalling concrete acts of care and rejecting bloodline-based ambition, Jon undermines Theon’s attempt to sow resentment and prompts him to reconsider betraying Winterfell 436.
Supernatural Connections
- Ghost: Jon’s direwolf accompanies him during dangerous preparations and encounters, including the wight crisis and his approach to the White Walker messenger 53 54 258.
- Winter’s tolerance: Jon is among the few people, alongside Lynn, Tyrion, and Daenerys, whose presence does not provoke Winter’s dislike 451.
- Limits of recorded evidence: Jon’s participation in Lynn’s vision of the past and his acceptance by Winter do not establish that he possesses Lynn’s magic or system abilities 435 451.
