Background / History

Early Kingdoms and Stark Rule

During the Age of Heroes, the North consisted of dozens of competing tribal kingdoms. Its strongest rivals were House Stark’s King of Winter and House Bolton’s Red King. After prolonged warfare, the Starks conquered the Boltons and forced them to swear allegiance, establishing a rivalry that survived beneath Bolton submission 249.

Northern religious history traces the Old Gods’ worship to the First Men and the Children of the Forest. The account presented in the novel describes their alliance against the White Walkers, followed thousands of years later by the Andal invasions that drove them north. The North retained the Old Gods’ faith while the south adopted the Seven 5.

House Stark also sheltered displaced families. A little less than nine hundred years before the northern lords’ gathering, the Starks took in House Manderly after its expulsion from the Reach and granted it White Harbor. This protection became the foundation of generations of Manderly loyalty 247.

Lynn’s Acceptance and the Free Folk

Lynn initially gains an opportunity to fight for the North by joining Robb’s expedition against bandits. After Benjen confirms the return of the White Walkers, Ned accepts Lynn as an ally and permits him to remain, declaring that the North needs him more than the Night’s Watch does 6 19.

The White Walker threat becomes central to northern preparations. Before leaving for King’s Landing, Lynn entrusts his young three-headed dragon, Winter, to Robb. Robb secretly shelters it in Winterfell’s abandoned First Keep, accepting its potential importance to the North’s defense despite the danger of concealing a dragon from Robert 92.

Lynn subsequently settles Free Folk tribes in the Gift and succeeds Mance Rayder as King Beyond the Wall. He presents their settlement as an opportunity to reclaim wasteland, increase food production, and provide labor, taxes, and soldiers—not merely as the admission of a frontier enemy 149 173.

Southern Campaign and Bolton Treachery

At Winterfell’s Harvest Council, Lynn links the threatened southern supply routes to the North’s survival through the coming winter. Roose Bolton attempts to characterize the conflict as Lynn’s personal quarrel, but Lyanna Mormont invokes the North’s debt to him, and the lords renew their support 247 248 249.

Ned’s announcement of Arya’s betrothal to Lynn turns that alliance into a family bond. The ensuing wedding strengthens northern unity and frustrates Roose’s plans to exploit divisions between Lynn and the Starks 250 251.

During the campaign, Robb leads forty thousand men along the Kingsroad as bait while Lynn takes another force through a magically frozen route across the Neck. Despite Ramsay Bolton’s betrayal, Robb traps the Vale knights through disciplined spear formations, flank attacks, and a feigned retreat 260 261.

Lynn later secures grain commitments from the Riverlands and the Vale. On his return, Ned explicitly entrusts the North to him. Ramsay’s public execution and the order to seize the Dreadfort mark the suppression of the Bolton challenge, after which Lynn considers the region internally secure 290 292 303.

Food Deliveries and Undead Reconstruction

Lynn returns to Winterfell at the head of an Army of the Dead and demonstrates that the wights obey him. Giant wights deliver sealed jars of food, fulfilling his promise to provide for the North. He announces that supplies will be calculated according to each domain’s population 326.

The northern vassals then kneel and pledge loyalty to him. Undead laborers are distributed across their domains, repairing fortifications, expanding settlements, clearing woodland, and gathering fuel. Their usefulness gradually changes popular attitudes from fear of “monsters” to respect for “lord laborers” 327 328.

Independence Under Lynn

Ned formally relinquishes House Stark’s claim to the northern kingship and gives Lynn Ice, the Valyrian steel greatsword representing the North’s authority. He declares that Lynn will lead the region through the bitter winter and the Long Night 394.

The assembled northern lords accept the decision without objection. Lynn then brings Joffrey before them and, under his control, obtains formal recognition of an independent northern kingdom on behalf of the Iron Throne. The hall acclaims Lynn as King in the North 397.

Ironborn and Stannis

Euron Greyjoy targets the new kingdom through both infiltration and invasion. He sends Theon and Asha toward Winterfell on a supposed loyalty mission concealing orders to assassinate Lynn and the Starks, while directing Victarion to attack Bear Island 408.

At Bear Island, Lyanna Mormont urges the defenders to hold until Lynn arrives. Lynn’s fireball kills Victarion, and Robb’s waiting northern force cuts down the fleeing Ironborn. Euron subsequently arrives aboard a ghost ship and orders Dragonbinder sounded against Lynn 419 421.

Stannis remains opposed to northern independence. Davos warns him that the North’s climate, winter, and unity under Lynn make his campaign unwinnable. A later compromise proposing independence combined with fealty to Stannis is rejected by both rulers 440 453.

Government and Northern Houses

Authority

  • Under Ned: Northern affairs pass through the Warden of the North. Lynn’s title of King Beyond the Wall initially gives him no direct right to intervene in the region’s government 247.
  • Under Lynn: Authority shifts from Stark protection to personal allegiance to Lynn, culminating in his formal kingship 292 327 394 397.
  • Control through undead labor: Lynn deliberately makes northern domains dependent on his workers. The same laborers can become armed enforcers at his command, giving reconstruction a coercive purpose alongside its practical benefits 328.
House Seat / Domain Role
Stark Winterfell Traditional ruling dynasty; Ned transfers the northern kingship to Lynn 13 394.
Manderly White Harbor Loyal to the Starks for sheltering their ancestors; supports Lynn’s trade, port expansion, and kingship 247 249 328 397.
Umber Last Hearth Greatjon strongly supports the southern campaign and backs Lynn’s leadership 248 249 397.
Mormont Bear Island Maege and her daughters attend the northern gathering; Lyanna advocates fighting for Lynn and defending their homeland 247 249 419.
Karstark Karhold Rickard answers Winterfell’s summons; Karstark forces help encircle the Vale army 247 260.
Glover Deepwood Motte Galbart is among the Stark vassals attending the council 247.
Tallhart Torrhen’s Square Harras joins the gathering of northern vassals 247.
Hornwood Earl Hornwood’s domain Receives ten thousand undead workers for repairs, woodland clearance, fuel gathering, and later mining 328.
Bolton The Dreadfort Ancient Stark rival whose renewed bid for power ends with Ramsay’s execution and an order to seize its seat 249 251 303.

Economy and Infrastructure

Winter Food Supply

  • Supply vulnerability: Control of the Riverlands’ southern gateway could cut off grain needed to prevent northern starvation 248.
  • Agricultural proposal: Lynn argues that settling the Free Folk could bring wasteland into cultivation and double northern food production; this is presented as a projected benefit 173.
  • Grain agreement: At Riverrun, Lynn offers methods to increase yields by at least thirty percent and preserve grain for years. Yohn Royce pledges one-third of the Vale’s stored grain, while Edmure Tully and other lords promise support 290.
  • Delivered provisions: Preserved meat, potatoes, turnips, and salted fish arrive in sealed jars. Lynn describes the delivered food as sufficient for one year and promises population-based distribution 326.

Trade and Construction

  • Essosi imports: Merchant traffic through White Harbor brings supplies and profits to northern houses. Wyman allows Lynn to use the harbor without charging taxes 249.
  • Rapid fortification repairs: Ten thousand workers repair Hornwood’s western wall in ten days, then begin clearing woodland and gathering firewood 328.
  • Port expansion: White Harbor gains three new docks in half a month. Wyman also plans a gravel road connecting the port to Winterfell 328.
  • Resource development: Hornwood begins working a small iron mine, while other lords rebuild and expand their lands 328.
  • Planned eastern ports: Lynn proposes two additional cities near the White Knife’s mouth, importing grain, cloth, and spices while exporting northern timber, ore, and furs 397.

Culture and Traditions

  • Old Gods worship: Northern faith centers on woods, streams, wind, and heart trees rather than southern septs. House Manderly’s Andal ancestry and worship of the Seven form a notable exception 5 247.
  • Execution custom: Northern tradition supports the principle that the person passing a death sentence should carry it out. Lynn invokes this custom when claiming the right to execute Alliser Thorne 77.
  • Honor through action: Ned recognizes Lynn’s offer to redeem himself in battle as consistent with northern and Stark ideals 6.
  • Practical warfare: Northern guards accept poisoned weapons when they offer an advantage, despite questions of honor 40.
  • Family names: Northern bastards bear the surname Snow 11.
  • Marriage rites: The northern lords favor a wedding in the godswood before the Old Gods rather than elaborate southern formalities 251.
  • Collective memory: Lyanna Mormont explains “the North remembers” as remembrance of kindness as well as grievances 249.

Military and Defense

Northern Forces

  • Mobilization estimate: Lynn calculates that the North could provide more than one hundred and fifty thousand troops if compelled to stand with him; this is his stated estimate, not a documented single deployment 149.
  • Elite Stark cavalry: Ned places a hundred loyal northern cavalrymen under Lynn’s sole command early in his service 29.
  • Kingsroad army: Robb commands forty thousand men during the operation against the Vale 260.
  • Infantry tactics: Northern troops stop cavalry with a three-rank spear formation, encircle opponents through coordinated flank attacks, and target horses and armor gaps in close combat 260 261.

Magical Defenses

  • Winter: The three-headed dragon is initially hidden in Winterfell as a potential defense against White Walkers and other enemies 92.
  • Undead forces: Lynn’s wights serve both as laborers and soldiers. At his recognition ceremony, he states that another five hundred thousand warriors stand behind those already seen building roads 328 397.
  • Logistical advantage: The undead require neither food, drink, sleep, nor rest, reducing the burden of maintaining Lynn’s forces through winter 397.
  • White Walker threat: Ordinary weapons and courage alone prove inadequate against enemy White Walkers; a veteran northern guard is killed after his axe and part of his arm shatter against an ice spear 70.
