Background / History

Orphanage upbringing and delivery work

Kannazuki grew up in an orphanage, where beatings, hunger, and bullying taught him to suppress visible distress. He later credited this upbringing with his ability to control his emotions and lower his heart rate through breathing 13.

As an adult, he worked as a food-delivery rider in Linhai City and lived in a cramped rented room at Happy Home. Rent, food costs, and the risk of losing his job constrained his response to abuse he witnessed while working 1 13.

He was familiar with Death Note before acquiring the real notebook. He admired the intellectual contest between Light Yagami and L, regarded Light’s downfall as forced by the writers, and later resolved not to repeat Light’s conspicuous pursuit of godhood 1 2.

First judgments

Kannazuki’s first target was Zhao Gang, whom he witnessed abusing his starving elderly father, Old Li. Unable to intervene without risking detention and his livelihood, Kannazuki gave Old Li food, water, and just over fifty yuan. That night, he found the Death Note and wrote Zhao Gang’s name 1 2.

Learning that Zhao Gang had died of the specified heart attack transformed Kannazuki’s initial fear into excitement. He began describing his killings as judgment rather than crime. His next experiment made hostage-taker Wang Hu drop his weapon and kneel before dying, protecting the child Wang Hu was holding 2.

His subsequent targets included corrupt surgeon Zhang Wei, bully Sun Ming, and loan shark Lei Bao. He increasingly tailored deaths to expose wrongdoing or punish victims through symbols of their crimes: Zhang Wei publicly confessed, while Lei Bao choked on cash and gambling chips 4 8 9 11.

Chen Lei’s investigation

Detective Chen Lei connected the unusual deaths to delivery routes and eventually focused on Kannazuki. Kannazuki destroyed computer hardware, moved his online activity to an abandoned chemical plant, acquired surveillance access, and used ordinary deliveries to explain his movements 7 11 17 19.

To break the investigation’s timeline, he arranged for detained businessman Li Jianguo to expose corruption and die while Kannazuki was under surveillance and being interrogated. With no admissible evidence and an intact alibi, Chen Lei released him 16 19 20.

Ryuk’s appearance revealed that the notebook’s supernatural framework differed from the fiction Kannazuki remembered. Ryuk had been created by an unknown being specifically to bring him the notebook, and the Creator had added three concealed rules 13 14 15.

Kill-based evolution and the capital conflict

Kannazuki discovered that his killings permanently improved his intelligence, memory, and bodily control. He also investigated restrictions protecting officials such as Chen Lei, reasoning that indirect attacks through controlled intermediaries might bypass direct-killing protection 22.

His attack on the Construction Group killed thirteen enforcers simultaneously and diverted police resources. Meanwhile, Wang Mingyuan’s search for Sun Jianguo’s missing ledger produced a hundred-million-dollar bounty and widespread attacks on delivery riders wearing yellow 24.

After deceiving three hired attackers, Kannazuki identified them and wrote their deaths by infighting. He then compromised the delivery platform’s dispatch server to assign himself an order for Wang Mingyuan at Dongding Tower 25.

Erasing the remaining evidence

Chen Lei identified a suspicious shipping weight in Kannazuki’s old manga order. Kannazuki independently recognized the same vulnerability through enhanced recall, then expanded his hacking abilities using compromised internet-café computers and a concealed miniature terminal 31 33 34.

He deployed the Borer program against the logistics company and ultimately made 1,200 unrelated historical orders display the same 0.30 kg weight. This buried his shipment within an apparent widespread system error rather than leaving a conspicuous correction to his own record 35 36.

He also discovered that the notebook replenished removed pages and that detached scraps remained functional. He used a separate page to arrange loan shark Sun Daqiang’s death under heavy police protection, intending to demonstrate the failure of Chen Lei’s security measures 37.

Disposable Kira and staged death

Kannazuki assembled a subsidiary notebook from thirty genuine Death Note pages and delivered it to the violent criminal Shrimp. He concealed important rules and exploited the fact that the subsidiary notebook could kill without enhancing its holder’s intelligence 40 41.

Shrimp’s twelve initial killings diverted suspicion from Kannazuki. Kannazuki also concealed Shrimp’s digital traces to prolong the distraction, but expected Chen Lei to return once the substitute exposed himself 41 42.

To abandon his original identity, Kannazuki controlled Liu Jianguo into preparing an explosion and placed wanted fugitive Zhao Qiang at its center as a body double. He protected a lock of his own hair inside Zhao Qiang’s clothing, while the blast destroyed the corpse’s face and fingerprints. The resulting forensic report identified the remains as Kannazuki, and Chen Lei closed his case 43 46.

Light Yagami identity and the wider Kira campaign

Kannazuki resurfaced as Light Yagami, a graduate student at Linhai University’s Law School. His new identity included deceased parents, a substantial inheritance, and clean social connections; he also made subtle changes to his face 46 49.

Anticipating that L would discover multiple Kiras, Kannazuki distributed Death Note pages to three disillusioned legal experts—Robert Vaughan, Tanaka, and Hans—whose killings spread across different countries. He also embedded a plan in death-row inmate Zhang Qiang’s future actions to expose L’s location 49 50.

L nevertheless identified Light Yagami as one of three people to watch around Linhai University. During a law lecture, Kannazuki publicly defended Kira as a possible response to failed justice, while the professor condemned Kira’s actions as murder and mob rule 50.

Appearance

  • Ordinary public persona: Initially presents himself as a dull, harmless-looking delivery worker, usually wearing a yellow delivery jacket and helmet 1 14.
  • Height: Normally 181 cm; his enhanced bodily control allows him to alter his posture for disguise 25.
  • Service-worker disguise: Uses a tailored suit vest, spotless white shirt, and plain-lens gold-rimmed glasses to enter Dongding Tower as an elite waiter 26.
  • Light Yagami persona: Wears a tailored black trench coat or black silk shirt with gold-rimmed glasses, adopting a colder bearing than his delivery-worker persona 46 49.
  • Altered face: Makes subtle facial changes when establishing his new identity; the precise method is not specified 49.

Personality

Kannazuki initially shows compassion toward people failed by ordinary social protections. He feeds Old Li, worries that suddenly killing a hostage-taker could endanger a child, and investigates Zhang Wei rather than treating an accusation alone as sufficient proof. He initially rejects killing unpleasant landlords, managers, or customers merely because he dislikes them 1 2 3.

That restraint coexists with an increasingly absolute belief in his own authority. He reframes murder as judgment, calls his targets “trash,” and concludes that only he can change the world with the notebook. His punishments become deliberately humiliating and theatrical even as he criticizes Light Yagami for attracting attention 2 4 20 37.

He is methodical, guarded, and willing to manipulate both criminals and investigators. He treats Shrimp as expendable, withholds deductions from Ryuk, and destroys evidence physically, chemically, and digitally. His consideration of killing a fruit seller—abandoned because it would attract police suspicion—shows how far self-preservation has entered his targeting decisions 31 35 36 40 41.

Abilities & Skills

Death Note killing and control

  • Target identification: Requires a victim’s name and a mental image of their face; a name alone cannot distinguish people who share it 2 3 11.
  • Specified deaths: Can write a cause within forty seconds of the name; without a specified cause, the default is a heart attack 2.
  • Pre-death behavior: Scripts confessions, movements, destruction of assets, and other actions leading to death 4 16 31 43.
  • Extended control: Recognizes control over a victim’s actions during the twenty-three days before death as more strategically important than killing alone 49.
  • Practical limits: Tests whether complex conditions are physically achievable instead of assuming the notebook can make impossible events occur 6 9.
  • Protected targets: Cannot normally kill people within the authorities directly. He investigates loss of official status and proxy attacks as possible exceptions; Ryuk warns that writing Chen Lei’s name would end the game 22.
  • Shinigami Eyes: Refuses the offered exchange of half his remaining lifespan for the Eyes 15.

Permanent enhancement

  • Intelligence and memory: Killings accelerate reasoning and produce extraordinarily detailed recall 22 31 33.
  • Muscle control: Manipulates a utility knife without injury, performs concealed hand movements, and writes with his non-dominant hand to disguise handwriting 22 33 40.
  • Physical adaptation: Gains strength, sharp dynamic vision, and unusually fine control over posture and heartbeat 24 25.
  • Endurance: Remains mentally clear after forty-eight hours without sleep amid exertion and interrogation 22.
  • Limitation: A subsidiary notebook does not provide its holder with the main notebook’s enhancement effect 41.

Cyber intrusion and anti-tracking

  • System control: Compromises delivery dispatch, population records, logistics databases, and financial-grade systems 25 35 36 40.
  • Remote infrastructure: Establishes an internet-café backdoor and uses its three hundred computers as compromised machines 33.
  • Anonymity: Routes connections through international proxies and builds a system that switches physical nodes every three seconds 35.
  • Evidence manipulation: Rewrites historical records, erases logs, and creates misleading network trails 28 35 36 40.
  • Operational restraint: Leaves financial balances and database contents untouched during his Alipay and WeChat penetration test 35.

Deception and counter-surveillance

  • Emotional control: Uses controlled breathing to conceal nervousness during Chen Lei’s pulse check 13.
  • Physical precautions: Uses doorframe tape and pencil dust in his lock to detect entry into his room 13.
  • Professional cover: Exploits delivery records, route access, and customers’ expectations of a submissive courier 11 17 19.
  • Alibi construction: Arranges deaths while visibly under police observation or in custody 16 19 20.
  • Identity replacement: Combines a body double, planted hair, destructive heat, and a new identity to escape his original case 43 46 49.

Trivia

  • Kannazuki remembers the original Death Note story after its public references are overwritten: an old forum reply changes from naming Light Yagami and the Death Note to naming Kira and a shinigami curse 30.
  • He regards that erasure as an advantage because investigators can no longer learn his notebook’s rules from the original fiction 30.
  • Ryuk initially has no name or knowledge of the original story; Kannazuki supplies the name “Ryuk” himself 14 30.
  • He hides core C++ code inside a battered copy of Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils after a police inspection 34.
