Background / History

Ryuk remembers being created and being sent into the world to deliver the Death Note to Kannazuki. He does not know his Creator’s name and denies knowing anything about a Shinigami Realm. Although his appearance and behavior match the fictional Ryuk familiar to Kannazuki, Kannazuki concludes that he is a newly created copy rather than a being who crossed over from another world 14 15.

Initially claiming to have no name, he accepts “Ryuk” after Kannazuki offers him a Red Fuji apple. He rejects Kannazuki’s assumption that he dropped the notebook into the human world out of boredom: the Creator deliberately chose Kannazuki to receive it 14.

Ryuk has no memories of the original Death Note story and does not recognize Light Yagami’s name when Kannazuki asks about him 30.

Appearance

• Build: Over two meters tall, with extraordinarily long limbs and enormous, sharp-nailed hands 13 14.

Personality

Ryuk treats human conflict as entertainment rather than a moral struggle. He praises Kannazuki’s nerve, laughs at elaborate murders, and mocks his fear of being killed despite wanting to become a god. His stated preference is to “watch the show,” not to serve as a dependable ally 13 16 22 39.

He deliberately withholds information to preserve uncertainty. He refuses to explain the Creator’s added rules and later answers L’s questions evasively, concealing the subsidiary notebook’s origins without directly denying the relevant possibilities. Kannazuki consequently hides some of his own deductions from Ryuk, fearing that the shinigami might give the police hints to make the contest harder 15 31 49.

Apples can overturn his detached attitude. When deprived of them, he becomes physically distressed and desperate enough to threaten Kannazuki; receiving one immediately restores his satisfaction and apparent friendliness 36.

Abilities & Skills

Shinigami Eyes

Ryuk possesses Shinigami Eyes and can offer them to a human in exchange for half that person’s remaining lifespan 15.

• The eyes reveal a person’s real name and remaining lifespan by looking at their face 15.
• Kannazuki confirms that the exchange exists but refuses it 15.

Restricted Visibility and Undetectability

People who have not touched the Death Note cannot see Ryuk or hear his voice. He also states that human surveillance cameras and recording equipment cannot detect him 15.

• He accompanies Kannazuki through public streets and police interrogation without attracting ordinary observers’ attention 19 20.
• Chen Lei sees him after touching genuine notebook pages, while electronic surveillance still captures no image of the shinigami 48.
• L must obtain Ryuk’s appearance and answers through Chen Lei rather than observing him directly 48 49.

Flight and Passage Through Walls

Ryuk floats, flies using his wings, and can pass through walls 13 20 49.

• He follows Kannazuki above his moving scooter 20.
• He passes through a wall to enter Kannazuki’s apartment 49.
• He can also interact with physical objects, crushing a pen and pushing Chen Lei’s gun aside 15 48.

Subsidiary Apparition

Ryuk produces a translucent apparition approximately one-tenth his size and sends it into Kannazuki’s handmade subsidiary notebook 39.

• Thirty genuine Death Note pages form the notebook’s functional core 40.
• Its recipient can see the small apparition and use the genuine pages to kill, but cannot see Ryuk’s actual body through that notebook 40.
• This separation helps Kannazuki keep Shrimp isolated from the original notebook and its owner 40 49.

Knowledge of Death Note Rules

Ryuk knows rules that are not initially disclosed to Kannazuki, including the Creator’s modifications 15 22.

• Confirms that killings with the original notebook permanently improve its owner’s intelligence, memory, and muscle control 22.

• Confirms that even a tiny scrap retains its killing power when the writer knows the target’s name and face 49.

Limitations & Weaknesses

Apple Dependency

• Ryuk describes the food he ate in the void while searching for Kannazuki as shriveled gray matter that tasted like sand 36.
• Without apples, his body twists and his insides feel as though they are burning 36.
• Kannazuki uses continued access to apples as leverage, arguing that Ryuk benefits from keeping him alive and out of prison 36.

Shen He’s Restrictions

• Ryuk ultimately explains that protected authorities cannot be killed either by writing their names directly or by controlling another person to kill them. This corrects Kannazuki’s earlier theory about killing by proxy 22 23.
• The restriction comes from Shen He, an absolute law that reviews the Creator’s story and stands above the Creator 23.
• A prohibited death—especially that of a character representing the positive side of the authorities—could result in the entire world and its Creator being sealed away, which Ryuk calls a “404” 23.

Relationships

• Kannazuki / Light Yagami — The human Ryuk was created to find. Ryuk follows his schemes with amusement, while Kannazuki uses apples to influence him and withholds deductions he does not trust Ryuk to keep secret 15 31 36 49.
• The Creator — Gave Ryuk life and tasked him with delivering the notebook. Ryuk conveys the Creator’s intentions but initially conceals the added rules 14 15.
• Shrimp / Xia Ren — User of the subsidiary notebook associated with Ryuk’s apparition. Ryuk mocks his failures and rejects his pretensions to godhood rather than rescuing him from police custody 40 44 45 48.
• Chen Lei — Becomes able to perceive Ryuk after touching genuine pages. Ryuk asks him for apples, pushes his gun aside, and answers questions during Shrimp’s interrogation 48 49.
• L — Questions Ryuk indirectly through Chen Lei. Despite Ryuk’s evasiveness, L uses his confirmation about torn pages to establish that Shrimp is a decoy; Ryuk later acknowledges L’s intelligence 49.
