Background / History
Joining the Pilgrimage
By the time Xuanzang and Sun Wukong encounter the Six Thieves, the tiger has already been subdued, named A-Hu, and become an obedient mount. When the bandits block their path, she crouches to attack but is calmed by Xuanzang 11.
A-Hu carries Xuanzang across rugged mountains and streams without abandoning him, even when thorns tear her hide. On one cold night beside a sheer cliff, she shields Xuanzang from the wind with her body. Xuanzang explains to Wukong that A-Hu has willingly taken refuge in the Buddha and should be regarded as a fellow disciple 12.
Eagle Sorrow Ravine
At Eagle Sorrow Ravine, Ao Lie offers to help Xuanzang cross the cold waters in exchange for eating A-Hu. Although the dragon’s presence leaves A-Hu trembling, she steps in front of Xuanzang to protect him. Sun Wukong intercepts the dragon’s attack and shields them from a subsequent wave 12.
When Guanyin proposes making Ao Lie into a horse, Xuanzang refuses to replace A-Hu. He insists that their master–disciple bond obliges him not to abandon the tiger. Guanyin subsequently blesses A-Hu so that she can better survive the journey 14 15.
Guanyin Monastery and Black Wind Mountain
Following the monastery fire, A-Hu drives Elder Jinchi back with a growl when the elder lunges for Xuanzang’s robes. She later carries Xuanzang toward Black Wind Cave for a personal meeting with the Black Bear Spirit 18 20.
After Xuanzang receives the Red-Blood Buddha Wheel, A-Hu’s purr becomes intelligible to him as an affectionate question about when they will leave. Xuanzang later assures Gao Cai that the tiger has accepted the precepts and does not harm people 25.
Yellow Wind Ridge and Sihali Kingdom
Tiger Vanguard attacks the pilgrims after accusing Xuanzang of humiliating a fellow tiger by riding her. During Xuanzang’s abduction, A-Hu bites the intruder and refuses to release him. She is left with several saber wounds deep enough to expose bone; Wukong stabilizes her injuries with immortal energy and assigns Ao Lie to guard her 34.
A-Hu later answers Xuanzang’s silent summons and flies him back to his disciples. She initially refuses to carry Xuanzang into Yellow Wind Cave again, relenting only when her master insists that he must honor his promise to return. She subsequently transports Xuanzang to the Sihali Kingdom, guided by Great King Yellow Wind 39 40 42.
Flowing Sand River and Later Travels
At the Flowing Sand River, Wukong warns that A-Hu’s wings cannot guarantee safe passage over the strongly restrictive Weak Water. The company instead boards a Dharma Boat formed with Sha Wujing’s Nine Skulls and the Bodhisattva’s Red Gourd 45 48.
After Sha Wujing joins, A-Hu remains Xuanzang’s mount. Xuanzang assigns Ao Lie to look after her and carry messages while Wujing takes over the luggage 50.
At Pingding Mountain, the little fox later identified as Ayu leaps onto A-Hu’s forehead to guide the party along a secluded trail. A-Hu angrily tries to shake her off, but obeys Xuanzang’s request to tolerate the passenger 96 512.
In Wuji Kingdom, A-Hu helps Sha Wujing settle his agitated mind before teaching scripture. She sweeps his other texts back into the luggage with her wings, leaves only his handwritten Heart Sutra, and points him toward that single text. Wujing later credits this intervention with teaching him to prune away distracting branches and hold to the central trunk of his explanation 128 317.
During the encounter with Red Boy, A-Hu shields Xuanzang with her wing despite the pain caused by Samadhi True Fire. She later affectionately congratulates Little White Dragon after his exchange with Red Boy 149 174.
At the Blackwater River God Mansion, Little White Dragon interprets A-Hu’s roar and gestures as saying that their destination does not matter so long as the companions remain together. A-Hu nods in agreement 180.
Tongtian River and the Old Tortoise
Before entering the Chen family courtyard, Sanzang orders A-Hu to remain outside so that she will not frighten the household. She obeys, hiding in the grass with her wings over her head, while Little White Dragon visibly objects to her exclusion 267.
During the confrontation with Great King Linggan, Sha Wujing hands Guan Bao’er and One Tael of Gold to Sanzang, and A-Hu carries them away. The children seize Sanzang and drag him off her back into the black water. A-Hu tries to recover them, but the dissolving Chen family becomes black water and grasping hands that obstruct her. Unable to break through, she calls aloud to Little White Dragon and Sha Wujing to save their master 277.
After the Tongtian River events, Xuanzang asks A-Hu to explain the Old Tortoise’s request. Her extended answer astonishes Bajie, who had not realized that she could speak. She explains that she did not deliberately conceal the ability and that Little White Dragon helped her speak for longer 315.
A-Hu argues that the Old Tortoise likely already knows his Ao Fish ancestry and the dragon transformation tribulation. In her interpretation, his questions about lifespan and Transformation seek a guarantee of success without risk, rather than merely sensible preparation. Sha Wujing agrees, and Wukong praises her spiritual insight 315.
She subsequently acknowledges that her first explanation oversimplified the matter. Drawing on her own experience of a comparable tribulation, she identifies taking the first step as the hardest part and explains that no one can give the Old Tortoise certainty. Her discussion with Wukong develops into an account of her own cultivation path: discerning distracting thoughts, helping others remove them, and recognizing the limits of her authority to intervene 316 317.
Captivity under Great King Si
At Jindou Cave, A-Hu shields the unconscious Xuanzang and insists that she is his disciple, not merely a mount. Great King Si mocks her lack of a Dharma name and formal rank, but she firmly maintains that A-Hu is a real name because her master gave it to her 323 324.
A-Hu fights the lesser demons while keeping Xuanzang protected with her wings. By Great King Si’s return, discarded weapons and nets surround her, more than a dozen demons lie injured, and her own wing bears bloody gashes. Great King Si displays Wukong’s captured Golden Cudgel and tries to persuade her that her senior brother has abandoned her 326.
She rejects his attempt to separate her from the fellowship. A-Hu reveals that Xuanzang had offered her a Dharma name, but she declined because she liked being called A-Hu and did not want to put him in a difficult position. She declares that she willingly carries him wherever he wishes to go and refuses Great King Si’s offer to stay and learn Transformation and magic arts 326.
Great King Si seizes Xuanzang and binds A-Hu with Black Cords. Wukong, disguised as a scrawny demon, secretly loosens a knot and tells her to cooperate while he seeks a rescue opportunity. A-Hu stops resisting and offers to remain behind so that the others can be saved first. She later realizes that Great King Si knew the disguised demon was Wukong all along 326 327 329.
Great King Si tells A-Hu that she was formed from Xuanzang’s seven emotions and was intended as an obstacle to his cultivation. He claims that the Mind Ape should have killed her and that Xuanzang cannot become a Buddha while retaining such worldly feelings. A-Hu rejects this claim. Great King Si then restrains her with an orange peel, isolates her hearing to his tapping, and recites a teaching about Heaven, life and death, and transformation 330.
A-Hu subsequently appears in human form as a woman wielding twin blades and calling herself You Ren. Little White Dragon’s appeals briefly unsettle her, but the chime of a golden ring around her ankle restores her controlled state. He identifies the ring as the apparent cause and tries to strike it without harming her 333 334.
After regaining awareness, A-Hu finds herself exhausted rather than badly injured. She directs Sha Wujing to help Wukong and Bajie, then carries the injured Little White Dragon toward the sheltered cave where Xuanzang is waiting. She warns Wujing to stop Wukong and retreat if Great King Si proves unbeatable 335.
When Xuanzang later leads the company toward Jindou Cave, A-Hu remains unusually silent after hearing that something has happened to Great King Si. She crouches to receive Xuanzang as usual, but he chooses to walk with the disciples instead 350.
Immortal Reversal and the Name Wuyuan
The Old Lord states that A-Hu originally had no allotted place in the pilgrimage and that taking the little dragon’s place left both without their expected positions. Wukong immediately steps in front of her, calls her his junior sister, and rejects further discussion of allotted places in favor of addressing their injuries 371.
During the disciples’ five-element practice, A-Hu is openly recognized as a senior sister. She teasingly calls Bajie her second junior brother, and Sha Wujing correctly addresses her as a senior sister. She likewise insists that Little White Dragon use “Senior Sister A-Hu” 372 373.
A-Hu and Little White Dragon participate in the dragon–tiger circulation of the Immortal Reversal Art. The dragon rises from Kan water while the tiger descends within Li fire, carrying the true yang hidden in Kan into Li and returning the true yin within Li to Kan. During the repeated circulation, A-Hu’s black stripes spread over much of her yellow fur 373 374.
Afterward, Miaole explains that the reversal has given A-Hu Ding Fire. Because she was born of the seven emotions, increasingly powerful thoughts can feed that fire until it enters her Spiritual Terrace and entangles her true heart with deluded thoughts, producing the dangerous Seven Emotions Tribulation. A-Hu accepts the prospect calmly as part of her cultivation 378.
Miaole offers his Seven-Petaled Golden Lotus to channel her emotional fire and protect her Spiritual Terrace, but A-Hu refuses the treasure. She also refuses his request to become her elder brother, explaining that she already has enough elder brothers. Instead, she accepts him as her little brother and tells him to call her Sister Tiger 378.
A-Hu later asks Xuanzang for a Dharma name. He grants her Wuyuan, meaning to comprehend the workings of conditions and the illusory nature of emotional attachments, with the wish that she cherish bonds without clinging to them or losing her true heart when they disperse. Wukong calls the formal name Yu Wuyuan a fine name, but A-Hu asks Xuanzang to continue calling her A-Hu 380.
Continuing as a Mount and Disciple
When Bajie and Little White Dragon question the propriety of her carrying Xuanzang after her female human Transformation, A-Hu objects that neither her willingness nor her ability has changed. She continues down the mountain with Xuanzang on her back 381.
She challenges Little White Dragon for deciding on her behalf what is appropriate simply because she is a woman. He recognizes that he has belittled her, bows, and apologizes; A-Hu forgives him. Later, when Xuanzang asks each disciple whether they believe they can become a Buddha, she answers proudly that she does 383.
Western Liang and the Wind and Moon Demon
A-Hu joins Wukong, Bajie, and Little White Dragon in fighting the Wind and Moon Demon. She disperses her golden wings and brings twin sabers into her hands. When the demon launches a sudden dark projectile at her, Wukong warns her to retreat and Little White Dragon intercepts the attack with his spear 433.
The four disciples block the demon’s attempt to reach Xuanzang while he tells the Queen a story. A-Hu later cuts the binding threads around her shoulders and waist with golden light from her crossed blades 433 437.
After the battle, A-Hu spreads her golden wings, catches the falling demoness, and carries her to Xuanzang’s side. Ruyi True Immortal rushes over and demands that she hand the woman to him 438.
During the restoration of the Mother-Child River, Miaole explains that Jade Flute will only need to replenish its power of creation at intervals. A-Hu remarks that the work has felt a little too easy 471.
Six-Eared Macaque and the Return from Heaven
Xuanzang suggests that A-Hu may teach Six-Eared Macaque if she wishes, and she agrees. When asked what she can offer, she says that hunting is her best skill but questions its usefulness to a vegetarian pupil 479 485.
Wukong and Bajie encourage her to ask Miaole for a weapon and pills for Six-Eared Macaque. A-Hu agrees only to act as a go-between, stressing that Miaole must decide for himself whether to help. Xuanzang reinforces that friendship should not be used to pressure someone into granting a favor. Miaole subsequently arrives with supplies entrusted to him by Manjushri and teaches A-Hu a communication technique 485.
During the dispute with the Bull Demon King, A-Hu accompanies Wukong and Bajie to Heaven to seek news from the Dao Ancestor and Miaole. At Doushuai Palace, Ayu recognizes her as Tiger Sister and explains that both have gone away. A-Hu’s attempts to contact Miaole receive no response 510 511.
Ayu privately gives A-Hu a small porcelain bottle of pills that Miaole left for Six-Eared Macaque. This reminds A-Hu of the Bull Demon King’s demand to exchange the Banana Leaf Fan for Little Six. She decides to return to the mortal realm, then seeks Wukong and Bajie after Ayu warns her that traveling alone through Heaven without knowing its routes could lead to punishment 511 512.
Ayu guides her, with some difficulty, to Qiming Palace. A-Hu recognizes her guide as the little fox from Pingding Mountain and teases her about still being unable to find her way after Transformation 512 513.
After finding Wukong and Bajie, A-Hu questions why the Bull Demon King wanted Six-Eared Macaque when he had already arranged a fight to the death with Wukong. She concludes that Xuanzang deliberately sent the disciples away, leaving only Little Six with him. Wukong rushes back toward their master, and A-Hu urges Bajie to follow him rather than merely escort her back 514.
Appearance
- Striped coat: Yellow-and-black fur that gains a faint, flowing radiance after Guanyin’s blessing 11 15.
- Broad wings: Fleshy rather than feathered, covered in golden down, with a span exceeding ten feet 15.
- Unchanged size: Her transformation strengthens her body without making it larger 15.
- Resonant roar: After the blessing, her roar loses its savage ferocity and acquires a clear resonance compared to metal and stone 15.
- Scars: Xuanzang strokes the scars remaining on her body after the Yellow Wind Ridge attack 34 39.
- Amber eyes: Present in her tiger form and retained in human form 308 377 378.
- Human form: A woman with short golden hair beside her ears, amber eyes, and a pointed canine visible when she smiles. She later wears a fitted black outfit 333 377 378 511.
- Refinement changes: Her black stripes temporarily spread across much of her yellow coat during the repeated dragon–tiger circulation in Li fire 374.
- Childlike voice: Her human speech is clear and crisp rather than a tiger’s growl; Bajie remarks that it sounds like a little girl’s voice 315 317.
Personality
A-Hu is affectionate, obedient, and protective of Xuanzang. She frequently nuzzles her master and lowers herself to make mounting easier. Her loyalty persists despite pain and fear: she continues through thorn-covered paths and confronts Ao Lie even while physically trembling before the dragon 12 15 19.
Her obedience does not erase her concern for Xuanzang’s safety. She briefly refuses to return him to Yellow Wind Cave, and she shows apparent disdain when Zhu Bajie calls her a simpleton. She nevertheless agrees with Xuanzang that numbered seniority does not determine the companions’ worth 39 50.
A-Hu can be indignant and territorial, as shown when Ayu climbs onto her head without permission, but she reins in her temper at Xuanzang’s request. She also has a mischievous, teasing side: she enjoys Bajie’s surprise at discovering her speech and insists that her junior brothers properly recognize her seniority 96 315 372 373.
She prefers quiet companionship to constant conversation, explaining that speaking is tiring and that she often cannot be bothered. Praise can embarrass her despite her occasional dramatic poses; she hides part of her face behind a wing when Sha Wujing and Wukong praise her insight 315 317.
Her spiritual reasoning combines incisiveness with concern for others. She distinguishes preparation from the greed for absolute certainty, acknowledges when her own argument is too simple, and recognizes the difficulty of deciding whether she is qualified to remove another person’s distracting thoughts. Wukong describes her seemingly merciless pruning path as compassionate guardianship at its roots 315 316 317.
A-Hu strongly values personal choice. She rejects Great King Si’s attempt to define her as an expendable mount, refuses Miaole’s treasure without surrendering the possibility of a family bond, and objects when Little White Dragon makes decisions about her duties on the basis of her sex 326 378 381 383.
She faces the prospect of the Seven Emotions Tribulation with composure and expresses confidence in her own capacity to become a Buddha. Her attachment to the fellowship is explicit: wherever they travel, being together matters more to her than the destination 180 378 383.

- Retains the use of her golden wings in human form, spreading them to catch and carry the fallen demoness 438.
Cultivation and Ding Fire
- Describes her cultivation as discerning and removing distracting thoughts while also judging when intervention in another person’s path is justified 317.
- Has personal experience of a life-threatening tribulation comparable to the one discussed in relation to the Old Tortoise, though no formal realm is specified 316.
- Participates as the tiger in the Immortal Reversal Art’s circulation between Kan water and Li fire 373 374.
- Possesses Ding Fire following the reversal. A dark red spark can emerge from her palm and withdraw into her body 378.
- Her origin in the seven emotions makes her thoughts fuel for Ding Fire, creating the danger of the Seven Emotions Tribulation if it reaches her Spiritual Terrace and entangles her true heart with deluded thoughts 378.
- Refuses the Seven-Petaled Golden Lotus offered to regulate that fire and protect her Spiritual Terrace. The lotus could assist her but could not undergo the tribulation in her place 378.
Relationships
- Xuanzang — Master and rider. Recognizes A-Hu as a disciple rather than a disposable mount and refuses to abandon her 12 14 15. Later grants her the Dharma name Wuyuan while respecting her wish to remain A-Hu in everyday address. He leaves her free to decide whether to accept Miaole’s offer and continues riding her after her female Transformation 378 380 381.
- Sun Wukong — Fellow disciple who protects her from Ao Lie and treats her wounds after Xuanzang’s abduction 12 34. Praises her spiritual insight and helps her examine the responsibilities of her cultivation path. He attempts to rescue her in disguise at Jindou Cave and later openly defends her as his junior sister 315 317 326 371.
- Guanyin Bodhisattva — Grants the blessing that transforms her into a winged spirit beast 15.
- Ao Lie / Ao Wuji — Initially tries to eat her; later becomes her traveling companion and is assigned responsibility for her care 12 34 50. Helps her learn extended speech, attempts to awaken and rescue her while she acts as You Ren, and participates opposite her in the dragon–tiger refinement 315 333 334 373 374. He later apologizes for deciding what she should do because she is a woman, and she forgives him. He also intercepts the Wind and Moon Demon’s projectile aimed at her 383 433.
- Zhu Bajie — Fellow disciple who jokes about her rank but explicitly dedicates a retaliatory blow against Tiger Vanguard to A-Hu 34 35 50. Is the last of the established companions to discover her speech and takes time to adjust to addressing her as a senior sister. Their exchanges remain teasing and argumentative 315 317 372 381.
- Sha Wujing — New fellow disciple who respectfully addresses her as “Senior Brother... Tiger” before her sex is recognized 50. A-Hu helps him focus his scripture teaching, and he later credits her with teaching him to remove distracting complexity. He recognizes her as a senior sister and assists after she regains awareness at Jindou Cave 128 317 335 372.
- Great King Si — Captor who attacks her sense of belonging, reveals her origin in Xuanzang’s seven emotions, and offers an unexplained opportunity after restraining her. She rejects his attempts to turn her against her master and senior brother 323 324 326 330.
- Miaole — Imparts the Dao to her and grants a blessing, then apologizes for the dangerous Seven Emotions Tribulation associated with her Ding Fire. She refuses his golden lotus and proposal to become her elder brother but accepts him as her little brother. He later teaches her a communication technique and entrusts pills for Six-Eared Macaque to her 378 485 511 512.
- Ayu — The little fox who rides on A-Hu’s head at Pingding Mountain. Later recognizes her human form as Tiger Sister, delivers Miaole’s pills, and guides her to Qiming Palace, despite continuing to struggle with directions 96 511 512 513.
- Six-Eared Macaque — Younger companion whom Xuanzang invites A-Hu to help teach. She agrees to seek suitable supplies from Miaole without pressuring him, and later recognizes that the Bull Demon King’s demand for Little Six may have greater significance than merely provoking Wukong 479 485 511 514.

- Her early masculine references do not establish her later-revealed sex: Great King Si points out that the companions had not even asked whether she was male or female, and she is subsequently recognized as their senior sister 326 371 372.
- She first declined a Dharma name because she preferred the name Xuanzang already used, but later requests and receives Wuyuan. She still asks to be called A-Hu in daily life 326 380.
- You Ren first appears as the name she uses while controlled in human form; after regaining herself, she freely offers it to Miaole as another name by which he may address her 333 377.
