Background / History
Ao Lie was the third prince of the West Sea Dragon Palace. Despite his position, he felt overlooked among his father’s many sons and grandsons. He later described his achievements as things others took for granted rather than expressions of his own identity. After he set a fire and burned a luminous pearl, Ao Run reported him to the Heavenly Court. He was sentenced to death, but Guanyin obtained a reprieve and stationed him at Eagle Sorrow Ravine to await the pilgrim 14 146 173.
His first encounter with Xuanzang’s company was hostile. He threatened to eat A-Hu, lost to Sun Wukong, and stole the travelers’ luggage while Wukong protected Xuanzang from a wave. When Wukong forced him out of the ravine, Ao Lie fought again before escaping as a water snake. Guanyin subsequently ordered him to become Xuanzang’s mount, but Xuanzang rejected the forced removal of a sentient dragon’s horns and scales. Ao Lie instead accepted service as an attendant, baggage carrier, path-clearer, and messenger 12 14 15.
Xuanzang’s conduct gradually changed his attitude toward that service. At Guanyin Monastery, Ao Lie initially wanted to kill the monks attempting to burn them alive, but obeyed Xuanzang’s request to save the innocent by summoning rain. His respect became genuine, and he eventually knelt before Xuanzang to request formal discipleship. He emphasized that this decision was voluntary, unlike his original punishment, and received the Dharma name Wuji 17 18 44.
Appearance
In human form, Ao Lie is a handsome young man with swordlike brows, dragon horns, silver armor, and white robes. His true form is an enormous white dragon with gleaming silver scales 12 14 95 149.
- Dragon horns: Broken during A-Hu’s rescue; the remaining wound later closes smoothly without a new physical horn growing 334 371.
- Red dragon markings: Created across his forehead and temples when Miaole restores an invisible horn using Bing Fire. They can dim when he reins in his aura 377.
- Straw hat: Worn to conceal his face, though it fails to prevent villagers from noticing his looks 116.
Personality
Ao Lie initially combines princely pride with resentment at humiliation. He reacts violently to the monastery’s attempted murder and complains that Bajie becomes a senior disciple while he remains a baggage-carrying attendant. Beneath that pride lies a persistent fear of being unnecessary: he compares himself unfavorably with every companion and believes the group would lose nothing without him. Xuanzang answers by teaching self-reliance and the True Dharma, then directly assures him that his work and studies are valued 17 29 146 147.
His loyalty becomes increasingly independent of obligation. He trusts that his companions will rescue him from the earth veins, risks his life to protect Xuanzang, and refuses opportunities to abandon the pilgrimage. He is also inquisitive, persistently questioning Xuanzang about principles and Bajie about ordinary life. His growing confidence appears in frequent sarcastic exchanges with Bajie, although provocation can still disrupt his composure in battle 150 154 180 259 408 432.
His earlier emotional reserve also has a supernatural cause. Miaole explains that the conflict between his Gui Water and hidden Ding Fire had gradually dulled his joy, anger, and willingness to speak. Breaking the horn makes him feel less constrained, while the later introduction of Bing Fire carries the opposite risk of a hastier temper 377.
Abilities & Skills
Dragon Transformation and Physiology
Ao Lie can shift between human and true-dragon forms while retaining access to draconic strength 12 23.
- Transforms into a small water snake to evade Wukong and hide in water weeds 12.
- Uses draconic strength in human form to interrupt Wukong and the Black Bear Spirit’s fight 23.
- His true-dragon constitution slowly repairs nonfatal injuries even without external spiritual energy 153.
- His dragon bloodline initially frightens and suppresses the mortal A-Hu 12.
Water, Rain, and Ice
As a dragon, he governs water, gathers cloud vapor, summons rain, and exhales freezing air 12 17 347.
- Rainmaking: Produces torrential rain over Guanyin Monastery. Xuanzang’s Nectar Buddha Wheel replenishes his nearly exhausted power and turns the rain into a purifying force against demonic wind 17.
- Water sensing: Detects the abnormal, death-laden moisture of the Flowing Sand River before the company reaches it 45.
- Flood rescue: Carries villagers through flooded streets on his dragon back 276.
- Ice formation: Temporarily freezes an oncoming flood and later stocks village water cellars with ice 347 502.
- Water management: Raises receding well water and draws heat out of granaries near Flaming Mountain 502.
- Limits: His rain cannot extinguish Red Boy’s Samadhi True Fire. Heavy earth also prevents him from absorbing suitable spiritual energy, and an injured horn interrupts his freezing breath 149 153 347.
Harmonized Water and Fire
His elemental nature is Gui Water. Originally, a strand of Ding Fire resided in his horn; Miaole later establishes Bing Fire in an invisible replacement horn to create a healthier balance 377.
- Can manifest cold white mist in one hand and red fire-light in the other, producing iridescent cloud where they meet 377.
- Is explicitly credited with gaining fire control after his earlier water-based abilities 502.
- Must regulate rising inner fire gradually rather than abruptly suppressing it or leaving it unchecked 377.
- Excessive Bing Fire can be tempered with yin water 471.
Spear Combat and Protection
Ao Lie fights with the Silver Spear, using thrusts, sweeping strikes, leverage, and rapid aerial movement 333 432.
- Guards Xuanzang at close quarters and follows Wukong’s defensive orders even when he does not understand the larger plan 95 109.
- Tears apart a net of hostile black hands with spear radiance 277.
- Holds off a false Wukong alongside Bajie while A-Hu evacuates Xuanzang 322.
- Activates his scarlet dragon markings while forcing the Wind and Moon Demon’s dark projectile back with his spear 433.
- Remains outmatched by Wukong in their early battles and suffers serious injuries against Great King Si 12 323.
Scholarship and Dragon Lore
Reading and martial arts were his favorite pursuits in the Dragon Palace. His studies include classics, histories, and the teachings of various schools 484.
- Recognizes Wuzhuang Temple from its identifying features 54.
- Explains the unpredictable dangers of Wish-Granting Stones rather than treating them as effortless instruments of salvation 125.
- Recounts Ao Fish’s lineage and analyzes the Tongtian River tortoise’s conflicting bloodlines 314.
- Acknowledges that his knowledge of the dragon transformation tribulation is secondhand and accepts A-Hu’s correction 316.
- Offers to teach Six-Eared Macaque the books and principles he has studied 484.
- His cultivation method is inherited through Dragon Tribe bloodlines and cannot simply be taught to Six-Eared Macaque 484.
Travel and Communication
He serves as a frequent messenger between the pilgrimage company and distant allies 14 57 513.
- Travels as a dragon-shaped streak of silvery light and also rides clouds 57 513.
- Uses the Dragon Tribe’s Telepathic Transmission Secret Art to attempt contact with Dragon Maiden, though she does not answer on that occasion 513.
- Can represent the company to mortal authorities, announcing their identity at a city gate 82.
Equipment / Weapons / Items

- Ao Run — Father and West Sea Dragon King. Their strained relationship begins to soften when Ao Run risks his vital foundation to locate him underground and later offers awkward praise 126 155 161 177.

- Six-Eared Macaque — Younger companion whom he encourages to seek alms, offers to teach, and praises for helping an elderly woman 482 484 490.
- Tuo Jie — Younger cousin whose envy of Ao Lie’s rescue and pilgrimage opportunity contributes to the Blackwater River conflict 178 180 181 192.

Trivia
- His intended place in the pilgrimage was the Mind Horse, but Xuanzang’s refusal allows him to retain his dragon form. The Old Lord later links this altered role to the company’s elemental imbalance 14 371.
- After experiencing relief from his broken horn, he briefly considers recommending the method to his siblings. Miaole warns that forcibly breaking horns is dangerous and only helped because of Ao Lie’s unusual elemental nature 377.
- He loses a cooking contest to Bajie, then refuses Sha Wujing’s assistance while determinedly attempting another vegetarian meal 202.
