Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Vajra Staff Technique — beginner level 4 6 Reached after roughly half a year of practice. Dongyue credits medicinal meat with helping him attain this level quickly; no cultivation-realm advancement is documented.

Background / History

Dongyue comes from a reasonably well-off family that runs a butcher’s shop in Yellowstone City and prepares medicinal demon-beast meat. He has eaten this meat since childhood and attributes his strength to it. His father donated a substantial sum toward repairing White Cloud Abbey, securing Dongyue’s admission. Although Dongyue hoped to learn spells, his lack of Spiritual Perception prevented him from becoming Chongyun’s formal disciple; he nevertheless considered his family’s connection to the Daoist worth the expense 5 7 11.

When Wang Yu joined the abbey as Autumn Leaf, Dongyue fetched the register and was instructed to tell outsiders that the newcomer had joined alongside him half a year earlier. He then showed Wang Yu around, supplied suitable Daoist robes, assigned him a room, and explained the distinction between nominal disciples and Qingfeng, Chongyun’s true disciple 4.

His attendant duties included sweeping the abbey’s courtyard. He also brought Wang Yu steamed buns and pickled vegetables on the newcomer’s first evening, and woke him the next morning to ensure that he attended Chongyun’s monthly martial lesson 4 5 11.

After Qingfeng brought supplies from Dongyue’s family, Dongyue shared medicinal beast meat with Wang Yu to improve his frail physique. When Wang Yu subsequently became much taller, Dongyue reacted with startled exclamations and persistent curiosity. He later learned from Qingfeng that Wang Yu had become Chongyun’s formal disciple and was exempt from cleaning duties, congratulated him, and secured a promise to see his spells once he learned them 6 7 10 11.

During the attack on White Cloud Abbey, Dongyue approached the gate carrying a lantern and witnessed Qingfeng’s severed head being thrown inside. He initially invoked Chongyun’s authority against the intruders, then warned Wang Yu to run when the attackers moved to kill them. The two fled together as far as the rear training ground before taking separate routes down the mountain 12.

After Chongyun rescued Wang Yu, Wang Yu reminded him that Dongyue had fled separately and might still be nearby. Chongyun reassured him that Dongyue was an ordinary mortal whose family had some influence in Yellowstone City, and would therefore be safe 14.

Wang Yu later spotted Dongyue unharmed at the Li Family Butcher Shop in Yellowstone City. His open appearance convinced Wang Yu that Dongyue’s family had enough influence to shelter him. Wang Yu did not approach him or reveal his own presence 21.

Appearance

  • Build: Chubby, with a plump face; repeatedly described as a fat or chubby boy 4 5 11 21.
  • Clothing: Wears Daoist attendant robes while living at White Cloud Abbey 12.
  • After returning home: Appears miserable-looking when an older, stout man pulls him back into the butcher shop, despite being physically unharmed 21.

Personality

Dongyue is talkative and readily familiar with newcomers: during Wang Yu’s first tour, he speaks as though they are already old friends. He enjoys showing off his staff technique and teasing Wang Yu, notably laughing when the newcomer discovers how painfully cold the sealed stone hut is 4 5.

His generosity is practical. He notices Wang Yu’s exhaustion, promises nourishment, and shares expensive medicinal meat without asking for payment. After Wang Yu becomes Chongyun’s formal disciple, Dongyue offers him all his remaining medicinal meat and promises to supply more 6 7 11.

His enthusiasm exceeds his discipline. Chongyun calls him lazy and criticizes his irregular practice, while Dongyue seeks praise and asks to learn swordsmanship before mastering his staff technique. He envies Wang Yu’s opportunity to learn spells but congratulates him and insists on seeing them once he can cast them 5 6 11.

He is intensely curious about unusual developments, questioning Wang Yu so persistently about his sudden increase in height that Wang Yu struggles to get away 10.

Abilities & Skills

Vajra Staff Technique

Dongyue practices the staff technique taught by Daoist Chongyun 4.

  • Can wield a heavy, iron-wrapped staff and strike a shallow pit into the ground 4.
  • Chongyun judges him reasonably proficient in the movements, but finds no improvement in his force application or breathing rhythm 5.
  • Habitually shouts with each move, claiming he cannot put strength into it otherwise 5.
  • Must develop a guard that even splashed water cannot penetrate before Chongyun will teach him another technique 5.

Local and Abbey Knowledge

Dongyue introduces Wang Yu to matters unfamiliar to someone from a remote village 4 6.

  • Explains demon beasts’ unusual physical traits and abilities, including fire and freezing breath 6.
  • Advises adding small strips of medicinal meat to porridge, warning that excessive consumption can cause nosebleeds 7.
  • Recognizes that the Emerald Little Bird’s arrival usually precedes Chongyun and Qingfeng leaving the abbey 12.
  • Explains that registered abbey members receive free martial instruction for one morning each month 5.
  • Knows that the papers sealing the locked stone building are talismans associated with warding off evil and creating seals. He has personally experienced the building’s intense chill, but does not know its purpose 4 5.
  • Knows about Spiritual Perception and the possibility of learning spells through formal discipleship, despite lacking the aptitude himself 11.

Cultivation Limitations

  • Lacks Spiritual Perception and therefore cannot see Yin Spirits or assist Qingfeng with them 8.
  • Cannot become Chongyun’s formal cultivation disciple despite wanting to learn spells 11.
  • Shows no understanding when Wang Yu asks about true qi and internal cultivation methods 6.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Iron-wrapped staff — Slightly taller than Dongyue; Wang Yu estimates its weight at thirty or forty jin 4.
  • Medicinal Beast Whip meat — Dried demon-beast pizzle steeped in medicinal tonics and prepared by his family. Dongyue gives Wang Yu half a piece, enough for approximately a month of small servings 7.
  • Family supplies — Receives a bundle through Qingfeng containing medicinal meat, a long string of copper coins, and two simple garments 6 7.

Relationships

  • Wang Yu / Autumn Leaf — Junior abbey brother whom Dongyue welcomes, guides, and supports with medicinal food. He also makes sure Wang Yu attends Chongyun’s monthly martial lesson 4 5 7 11. During the attack, he warns Wang Yu to flee. Wang Yu remains concerned about Dongyue after their separation and is delighted to discover that he has returned home unharmed, though he avoids revealing himself 12 14 21.
  • Daoist Chongyun — Abbey master and martial instructor. Dongyue admires and flatters him, but receives blunt criticism for ordinary aptitude and inconsistent training 5 6. Chongyun later expresses confidence that Dongyue’s mortal status and family influence will protect him after the attack 14.
  • Qingfeng — Eldest senior brother. Dongyue initially describes him as difficult to approach, but later defends him as warmhearted beneath his cold manner after he delivers supplies from Dongyue’s family 4 6.
  • Father — Funds Dongyue’s place at the abbey and arranges deliveries from home through Qingfeng 5 6.
