Background / History
Scholarly upbringing
Zhao Ting came from a family considered fairly wealthy in Fortune and Prosperity Town. His parents hoped he would earn scholarly honors and become an official, and he spent years preparing for the examinations. At twenty-four, he abandoned that ambition: he disliked the prospect of scheming in officialdom and wanted to cultivate immortality, travel the world, and see sights inaccessible to mortals 15 18 19.
He traveled to Clear Sky City for the Heavenly Dao Sect’s recruitment while telling his family that he was going to take the scholarly examinations. There, he met Chen Xun after paying to share his tavern table. Their initially awkward exchange developed into a friendly drinking conversation, during which Chen Xun suggested that Zhao Ting possessed the spiritual essence needed for cultivation 14 15 18.
Recruitment
Although well beyond the recruitment age limit, Zhao Ting persisted through public ridicule and received Shen He’s permission to undergo spiritual-root testing. The Spirit-Testing Artifact emitted brilliant golden light, revealing a metal-attribute heavenly spiritual root. Shen He explained that his exceptional aptitude made his age irrelevant and ranked him among Northern Mystic’s most gifted prospective cultivators 16 17.
Before leaving, Zhao Ting persuaded Shen He to bring the apparently deranged Chen Xun along and give him sweeping work on Servant Disciple Peak. The group also stopped in Fortune and Prosperity Town for two days so Zhao Ting could see his parents. Their delight at his acceptance, together with congratulations from prominent townspeople, made his family the town’s most prominent household 19.
Master selection and investiture
At the Heavenly Dao Sect, the core elders competed to recruit Zhao Ting, offering treasures, instruction, and other resources. He chose Fourth Elder Chu Ningshang, who possessed the same metal-attribute heavenly spiritual root. Nangong Yao privately regarded their matching roots as the strongest reason for that choice 24 25 26.
Zhao Ting was formally invested as the sect’s fifteenth Purple-Robed Disciple before visiting factions. When Chen Xun interrupted the ceremony, Zhao Ting pleaded for his life despite Shen He’s warning that intervening could bring severe punishment. The ceremony ultimately concluded with Zhao Ting receiving both his purple-robed rank and his position as Chu Ningshang’s personal disciple 29 30 31.
Personality
Zhao Ting is kindhearted and unusually modest for someone with a heavenly spiritual root. Shen He specifically contrasts his respectful, unassuming manner with the pride of other highly gifted disciples. Zhao Ting is initially uncomfortable with the deference shown to him and repeatedly becomes nervous under the attention of senior cultivators and large crowds 18 19 24 29.
His loyalty to Chen Xun survives their widening difference in status. He continues visiting his friend, seeks treatment for his apparent madness, and risks disciplinary consequences to protect him. This persistence disproves the expectations of sect members who assumed he would abandon a mortal acquaintance after becoming a Purple-Robed Disciple 24 27 30 33 34.
Zhao Ting takes pride in his accomplishments without losing his affectionate familiarity with Chen Xun. He boasts about his rapid cultivation and promises to look after him, remaining unaware that his supposed mortal friend is a master revered by the sect’s leadership. He even interprets Chu Ningshang’s hint about Chen Xun’s unusual nature as a reference to his claimed cultivation ancestry 34 36 45.
