Grounds and Territory

- Climate: Its sacred mountain remains springlike throughout the year; even in deep winter, snow does not fall 34.
- Back mountains: A secret passage offers a potential escape route, which Zhao Ting proposes using to evacuate Chen Xun during the demonic assault 50.
| Location | Function | Notable features |
|---|---|---|
| Servant Disciple Peak | Residence and workplace of the lowest-ranking disciples | The largest disciple peak, accommodating over ten thousand people. Lower-ranked disciples live halfway up the mountain, with higher-ranked disciples farther uphill 21. |

Organization and Hierarchy
Disciple Ranks
The following figures are reported when Zhao Ting arrives; the purple-robed count includes his anticipated appointment 21.
| Rank | Reported number | Position and requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Servant disciples | More than 10,000 | Lowest disciple rank. Ordinary-aptitude recruits such as Yu Zheng begin here; advancing beyond the third level of Qi Refinement permits promotion to the outer sect 17 21. |
| Outer disciples | Over 3,000 | Based on Human Mystic Peak, above servant disciples 21. |
| Inner disciples | Over 500 | Based on Earth Profound Peak and regarded as central to the sect’s strength 21. |
| Purple-robed disciples | 15, including Zhao Ting | Also called legacy disciples. They hold the highest disciple status beneath the sect master and elders, and each becomes an elder’s direct disciple 18 21 24. |
- Legacy aptitude: Heavenly spiritual roots are the highest grade represented among purple-robed disciples; even the lowest-grade roots within that group are supreme-grade earth spiritual roots 24.
- Leadership: Nangong Yao presides over nine core elders before Jiang Bailu’s death; eight remain afterward 29 50.
- Inner sect elders: The normal cultivation requirement is at least Core Formation. Shen He receives the appointment before meeting that requirement and is urged to cultivate diligently to secure his peers’ recognition 25.
- Ranked offices: An inner sect deacon such as Shen He holds substantially greater standing than a Servant Disciple Peak deacon such as Qian Laifu 22.
Rules and Daily Life
- Servant disciples divide their time between chores and cultivation and do not undertake missions outside the sect 36.
- Servant disciples are barred from purple-robed investitures and must remain on their own mountain during the ceremony 28.
- Contribution points can be deducted as punishment. Qian Laifu reverses deductions against dining-hall workers after discovering that Chen Xun caused the missing breakfast supply 26 28.
- Disciples who exhaust their prospects for advancement leave for the mortal world; a smaller number progress into the outer sect 34 36.
Recruitment and Training
Spiritual-Root Testing
- Schedule: The sect recruits in Clear Sky City every three years, generally finding only a handful of suitable children among its large population 14.
- Method: Candidates place a hand on a Spirit-Testing Artifact. If it lights up, they possess spiritual roots and remain for selection; otherwise, they leave 16.
- Age limit: The restriction is intended to prevent late-starting candidates with poor aptitude or false spiritual roots from wasting their time. Exceptional talent can override it 17.
- Zhao Ting’s exception: Shen He permits the over-age Zhao Ting to test, then accepts him after discovering his metal-attribute heavenly spiritual root 16 17.
- Mortal workers: Bringing an apparently non-cultivating mortal into the sect has no precedent known to Shen He. Chen Xun enters as a sweeper through Zhao Ting’s request, not as a disciple 19.
Cultivation Resources
- Heavenly Dao Art: New servant disciples receive its first volume; Zhao Ting receives the complete art at his purple-robed investiture 22 29.
- Direct mentorship: Core elders compete to accept exceptional recruits. Zhao Ting chooses Fourth Elder Chu Ningshang as his master 24 26.
- Resource investment: With his talent and the sect’s support, Zhao Ting reaches Foundation Establishment in one hundred days, its middle stage by the first year’s end, and its late stage during the second year 34 36.
- Public investiture: The sect openly celebrates gifted recruits to enhance its prestige and demonstrate how highly it values them 28.

- Emergency reserves: Hidden stores are reserved for existential crises and are unlocked during preparations for the attack 37 49.

History
Zhao Ting’s Recruitment and Chen Xun’s Arrival
Shen He’s Clear Sky City recruitment brings back Zhao Ting and four boys. Zhao Ting’s heavenly spiritual root earns him immediate attention from the leadership, while his request secures Chen Xun a sweeping job. The two enter the same sect with sharply different positions: Zhao Ting as a future legacy disciple and Chen Xun as an apparently mortal worker 17 19 21.
At Zhao Ting’s investiture, Chen Xun knocks out Heaven Mystic Peak’s guards and interrupts the ceremony by complaining about its noise. Xu Ansong orders his execution, but Zhao Ting pleads for him and Nangong Yao ends the matter after recognizing the senior he previously encountered at Little River Peak 29 30.
Guidance from Chen Xun
Nangong Yao begins secretly visiting Chen Xun’s hut and interpreting his seemingly mad remarks as cultivation instruction. The core elders eventually join him, finding that Chen Xun’s words clarify their understanding and strengthen their Dao hearts. They come to address him respectfully as “Teacher” 34 36.
Abductions and Resource Shortages
During Chen Xun’s third year at the sect, conflict between Northern Mystic’s righteous and demonic paths disrupts travel and supply. The Heavenly Dao Sect reports 215 outer disciples, 24 inner disciples, and one purple-robed disciple missing. Nangong Yao insists that every missing disciple matters, rather than prioritizing Su Jingyao alone 36.
With ordinary resources projected to last only another two months, Nangong Yao keeps the travel ban in place but authorizes an expedition under Wang Tianfu and Zhou Tong. Chen Xun independently kills hundreds of concealed demonic cultivators within the sect’s territory; the returning expedition finds their bodies, allowing the elders to identify the Great Evolution Demonic Sect’s involvement 37 38 40 43.
White Fox Ridge and the Demonic Assault
Nangong Yao arranges negotiations with Ji Wucang at White Fox Ridge to recover the captives and avoid war. The meeting instead becomes an ambush. Jiang Bailu destroys the Nether Snake Dragon-Suppressing Grand Formation through self-detonation, allowing the severely wounded Nangong Yao and Liu Xuan Yin to escape 43 45 47 48.
Chen Xun provides two pills that heal the survivors and warns that Ji Wucang will soon attack. The sect opens its emergency reserves, prepares formations, and requests reinforcements. Only the Heavenly Puppet Gate and Azure Blade Pavilion send aid. Ten demonic sects subsequently arrive with more than a hundred Demonic Boats and tens of thousands of Qi Refinement cultivators, placing the sect on the brink of destruction 48 49 50.
External Relationships
- Chen Xun — Resident sweeper rather than a disciple; becomes a respected teacher to the leadership. His destruction of the ambush force and healing pills materially strengthen the sect’s chances of survival 19 36 44 50.
- Great Evolution Demonic Sect — Principal identified enemy behind the disciple abductions and territorial ambush; its master Ji Wucang organizes the attack on the weakened sect 43 44 47.
- Heavenly Puppet Gate — Allied reinforcement led personally by Gate Master Pang Nian, accompanied by three elders and several hundred disciples 50.
- Azure Blade Pavilion — Allied reinforcement led personally by Pavilion Master Pu Yidao, likewise bringing three elders and several hundred disciples 50.
- Heavenly Sword Sect — Considered a potential source of assistance, but Nangong Yao judges it too distant to arrive before the attack 50.
