Outside the village stood a hill, neither particularly large nor small.
On the hill, two men in bamboo hats gazed into the distance. One wore black and held a brush in one hand and a little notebook in the other, apparently recording something.
A closer look would have revealed the faintly visible word "outstanding," with a separate comment beneath it: "savage."
"Song Yuanshan's son and daughter are pretty impressive!"
Closing the little notebook, the man in charge of recording looked at the corpses strewn outside the village and said admiringly, "I've always heard that Old Song's kids had no ambition and only wanted to coast through life. Who would've thought they'd be this savage when they got serious!"
The other man nodded with a smile. "They certainly exceeded my expectations. Punching straight through a man's chest-Song Xuan must have cultivated his family's Frost Force to a profound level. In the Houtian Realm, there really aren't many who'd dare claim their internal energy is stronger than his!
"As for their martial techniques, though..."
He hesitated. "These bandits were too weak, practically one sword strike per kill. It's hard to judge their martial techniques from that, but judging by how quickly Song Xuan and his sister wielded their swords, their swordsmanship should be quite good."
The man holding the little notebook smiled in satisfaction. "Those two were born to serve in the Black Robe Guard... Come on, let's head back and report.
"Oh, and notify the men below. The bandits on Langlang Mountain have outlived their usefulness. Have our brothers wipe them out immediately. Just seeing that scum live another day turns my stomach!"
The other man nodded, but still grumbled, "Suppressing bandits is the local authorities' job, yet we in the Black Robe Guard have to clean up their mess. The government offices around here must be rotten to the core."
The man in black sighed. "Come on. That's for the bigwigs upstairs to worry about, not us."
With that, they lightly tapped their toes against the ground and shot forward like arrows, vanishing into the woods in a few swift bounds, quick as hares and diving hawks.
At the village entrance below the hill.
Song Qian pulled her sword from the last bandit's neck, casually twirled it to flick the blood from its tip, and looked at Song Xuan with a touch of smugness.
"Brother, killing people is much easier than I imagined. And you went and prepared all those bottles and jars-we didn't need any of them!"
"Not needing them is best! I'd be delighted if we never needed them in our entire lives."
Song Xuan let out a soft breath. It was his first time killing, and he still felt somewhat uneasy. Song Qian, on the other hand, was all smiles, without the slightest trace of fear.
With that temperament, she really was born to be an assassin!
"The mission's done, so I can take this breastplate out now, right? It's so hard and uncomfortable." As she spoke, Song Qian reached into the front of her clothes.
Song Xuan glared at her. "Remember this: the world is full of experts. Don't think killing a few petty bandits makes you invincible!"
"I know!" Song Qian shrugged. Under her brother's stare, she ultimately didn't dare remove the breastplate. "Be cautious, be cautious. I get it. You've been saying that for over a decade."
Song Qian was in a wonderful mood after her first time going out to kill people with her brother.
Ever since childhood, she had dreamed of becoming a swordswoman who roamed the martial world. Unfortunately, her brother was far too cautious and had always forbidden her from leaving the Imperial Capital as she pleased, keeping that dream out of reach.
Heaven had finally taken pity on her. In her eighteenth year, her long-cherished dream of roaming the martial world, punishing the powerful and protecting the weak, had finally begun!
She sheathed her sword and turned toward the villagers. In an instant, her wonderful mood became considerably less wonderful.
She didn't see a single look of gratitude or admiration she had been expecting. Instead, the villagers' eyes were filled with fear, dread, and panic.
What was that supposed to mean?
This swordswoman just solved your bandit problem! Fine, don't shower me with gratitude, but why are you looking at us like snakes and scorpions to be avoided? Do I look that ferocious?
Song Xuan, however, seemed to understand something. He hung his sword at his waist and took a token from inside his clothes, his voice ringing out with a measure of authority.
"The Black Robe Guard is on official business, acting under orders to wipe out the bandits of Langlang Mountain. All uninvolved persons are to return home immediately!"
At those words, the previously terrified villagers' attitudes changed completely. An old man who looked like the village chief was helped forward, beside himself with joy, and kowtowed to Song Xuan.
"Honorable lord, as just as the clear heavens! You've finally come!"
One villager also gathered his courage and stepped forward to ask, "My lord, is that true? Is the Black Robe Guard really going to wipe out the bandits?"
"Of course it's true!"
Song Xuan put away his token and said gravely, "Go home at once. Unless absolutely necessary, try not to leave your homes today."
"Oh, one more thing!"
He pointed at the bodies on the ground. "Remember to send a few people to report this to the authorities. Have the County Yamen send men to collect the bodies!"
"My lord..." The old village chief hesitated. "Some of the officials in the County Yamen have ties to the bandit chief on Langlang Mountain. If we report this..."
He didn't dare finish, but his meaning was clear.
They were only ordinary villagers. If the officials took their anger out on them once they entered the County Yamen, how could they possibly bear the consequences?
"I am Song Xuan, a second-class Black Robe Guard!"
Song Xuan's voice was calm, but his expression was stern. "If anyone at the County Yamen gives you trouble, give them my name. Tell them that if they won't send men to collect these bodies, I'll go collect theirs!"
"If... if anyone still refuses to see reason after that, come find me in the Imperial Capital!"
"That's right!" Song Qian chimed in from the side. "Once you reach the Imperial Capital, just ask anyone and they'll tell you where we live. My brother is pretty famous there!"
The Black Robe Guard's little master of slacking off, the little prince of the pleasure houses-both titles referred to her brother, Song Xuan.
"Ahem..."
With a light cough, Song Xuan cut his sister off, then pointed at the bodies on the ground. "All right, shall we get to work?"
"Huh? What work?"
Song Qian froze. They were already dead. Surely they didn't have to dismember them too?
"Check them for stolen goods!"
Song Xuan shot her a glance. Killing people without looting the bodies-do you have any professional standards at all? What have I been teaching you all these years?
"Oh, right!"
Song Qian immediately caught on and happily began rummaging through the dead bandits' pockets. Every now and then, her pleasantly surprised voice rang out.
"Brother, this one has silver!"
"Brother, look! Doesn't this bottle look like those health supplements you brought?"
"Oh, there's a book here too..."
Song Xuan hurriedly turned to look.
What was going on?
Had he killed a few mobs and actually gotten a skill book drop?
He casually took the book with the indistinct cover from Song Qian and opened it, excitement stirring in his chest.
Then...
"Eww..."
Song Qian's disgusted voice rang out.
Song Xuan was speechless. He threw the book to the ground and, still unsatisfied, stomped on it twice.
Damn it.
An Erotic Album!
All that excitement for nothing!
