"Who are you?"

The pale young man, unsteady on his feet, shrank fearfully behind his few remaining guards.

Song Xuan looked him up and down and said indifferently, "Do you remember what you did last night?"

The young man's expression changed drastically. "Did that bitch send you to avenge her? Whatever she promised you, I'll pay double. No, ten times!"

Song Xuan sneered. "She paid with her next life. You can't afford that!"

As his words fell, Song Xuan clenched his hand, and the paper umbrella exploded in his grip. In an instant, scraps of paper shot out like blades, slicing the few guards left in the courtyard full of holes!

"Elder Zhou, save me! Save me!"

The prefect's young son now had more than a dozen scraps of paper embedded in his body. Though he looked pitiful, he had not died outright. Instead, he lay in a pool of blood, shouting repeatedly toward one of the rooms.

The room was silent, as though no one was inside.

But Song Xuan stood where he was, staring coldly at it. "You've been hiding long enough. Aren't you coming out?"

Creak~

The door opened, and an old man dressed in black stepped out, his expression grave.

He did not even glance at the corpses on the ground or the prefect's son, who was still wailing. Instead, he watched Song Xuan with extreme wariness.

"You're very powerful. I have no wish to fight you."

He pointed at the prefect's son on the ground. "I didn't stop you from killing him. Let's keep our well water out of each other's river. What do you say?"

Song Xuan shook his head. "I made someone a promise. Not one person who deserves to die will escape."

"So there's no room for discussion?"

The black-robed elder's expression turned sinister. "I am Zhou Tailai, the Heaven-Splitting Hand. I've roamed the martial world for decades. You may be powerful, but even if you can kill me, you might not leave unscathed! Is it worth it for a common woman?"

Song Xuan said nothing. His right hand was already on his sword hilt, and the killing intent in his eyes made Zhou Tailai struggle to breathe.

"Then die!"

Zhou Tailai struck first, turning his hand into a claw, his five fingers hooked. An eerie sheen gleamed at his fingertips, with dark internal energy faintly visible coiling around them.

His claw technique was formidable, even tearing through the air with an audible rip. He leaped high like a great roc and thrust his claw toward Song Xuan's throat.

Without question, if that claw landed, it could rip a person's windpipe straight out.

Whoosh!

Song Xuan moved like a phantom. A flicker of light and shadow was all that could be seen as he darted several yards away, evading by a hair's breadth the claw that could pierce metal and split stone.

Shing!

A longsword rang as it left its sheath.

Zhou Tailai's claw struck empty air, startling him. Before he could steady himself and change his move, he heard the sword ring. He hastily looked up, only to see a streak of crimson rainbow light.

Rip!

The crimson light flashed through his body. Zhou Tailai froze in place, staring fixedly at the longsword at Song Xuan's waist. He had no idea when it had been drawn-or when it had returned to its sheath.

"Sword Qi?"

Zhou Tailai's voice was hoarse.

Song Xuan nodded.

"So that's how it is..."

Understanding dawned in Zhou Tailai's eyes. Unleashing Sword Qi was an ability only a Xiantian Martial Artist possessed. To die beneath the sword of such an expert meant his life had not been in vain.

Boom!

The next instant, his body split with a ripping sound, straight down from the center of his brow to his crotch. That single stroke of Sword Qi had already cut him in two.

The halves were perfectly symmetrical, without the slightest deviation-even his dick had been split evenly.

After cleaving him apart with one strike, Song Xuan's killing intent subsided a little. He turned toward the prefect's son on the ground and saw that blood loss had left him barely conscious.

"Cousin~"

Just then, Song Qian came over with Lin Daiyu. His younger cousin asked nervously, "Can you let me kill this scum?"

Song Xuan gave her a surprised look. Was this really the Cousin Lin who mourned spring, lamented autumn, and wept as she buried fallen flowers?

"Aren't you afraid?"

Lin Daiyu did not answer. Instead, she proved herself through action.

She picked up a long saber from the ground and held it in both hands, her body trembling slightly. After taking aim for a long while, she finally drove it into the prefect's son's chest.

Once she had finished, she released the hilt and walked aside, her face a little pale, gulping down breaths.

Song Xuan walked over to her. Lin Daiyu forced a faint smile. "Now we're in the same boat. You won't have to worry about me revealing what happened, Cousin."

Song Xuan waved a hand. "You're overthinking it. I never suspected you would inform on us."

Lin Daiyu shook her head. "You trust me because you're generous-hearted, Cousin. But I must know how to conduct myself too. What needs to be done still has to be done."

Song Xuan gave her a long, searching look, then raised his eyes to the curtain of rain connecting heaven and earth. He could not help smiling.

"Let's go. We still have to keep traveling today. If we don't head back soon, that boy Lin Pingzhi will probably be frantic waiting for us."

Song Qian asked, "Brother, this scum acted without restraint, with a whole pack of vicious servants around him. That prefect clearly isn't any good either. Are we just letting them off?"

Song Xuan shook his head. "It would take several days to reach the prefectural seat. We don't have time now. We'll mark down the debt first, and when I can spare the time..."

Song Xuan paused, then said with chilling killing intent, "When I have time, I'll kill his entire family!"

After the rain, a hint of moisture lingered in the air.

Song Xuan stood on the slightly damp deck, watching the ship slowly leave the shore. The sea breeze carried a faint briny tang mingled with the fresh fragrance of the flowers, grass, and trees along the bank. His heart lifted and his mind opened, until he felt as though he had emptied himself completely.

After every battle, his understanding of martial arts grew a little clearer. He even felt as though a faint connection had formed between his mind and heaven and earth.

Somewhere deep within, he understood: when his entire consciousness could fully merge with the surrounding world and attain the subtlest perception, that would be the day he entered the Xiantian Realm.

Song Qian stood beside him with her hands behind her back, her long black robe fluttering in the wind. As she watched Song Xuan, a cold aura spread from her, keeping everyone from approaching.

No one could come near while her brother was having an enlightenment!

Not even their younger cousin in the same boat!

He remained standing there for more than four hours. By the time Song Xuan withdrew his awareness, the sky had turned completely dark.

The icy aura around Song Qian instantly vanished, and she flashed a radiant smile. "Brother, I'm hungry. I want barbecue."

"All right!"

Song Xuan smiled gently and turned toward Lin Pingzhi in the distance. "Pingzhi, bring over the barbecue grill I made a couple of days ago. And have someone bring another two jars of wine."
